I thought the performance they did on KEXP was the only live version available here on The Tube. This one with Ms Garbus in full battle paint is extraordinary! This clip, by any means MUST be preserved for future generations to behold. LIBRARY OF CONGRESS CALLING.
This is groovy as hell and hard to resist. There is something wonderful to be said about her tone of voice and varying levels of energy... And as for 'chip on my musical shoulder,' 1ofdiamonds, he's the one who's seeming pedantically esoteric.
sigh. I guess someone needs to point out that studio 360 is a RADIO SHOW and audience members aren't allowed to move around. sigh again... I don't even know why I read youtube comments, except for morbid curiosity. The amount of rudeness and ignorance displayed is mind-boggling. When a person gains a little wisdom you realize that you don't have to even remotely like a piece of music to appreciate the skill and artistry involved. imho this is WAY above average.
I like music, but I don't consider myself a musical expert of anything. After reading about this "group", I had to check it out. Respectfully, I just don't get it. The lead seems to be very talented, I can see that, but I don't connect with this at all. So for all of you fans that are gushing with praise and adoration, good for you, but please don't judge the members of the audience that sit still in front of this awesomeness. Maybe they don't like it. I would have walked out after this song.
@frgrgfrdf Exactly. That chick that is off to the bottom left of the screen is an idiot. MOVE!!! Feel the music. Tune-Yards cannot move through a human body without muscle spazzums. She must be an alien.
What kind of an audience is this? That one lady looks like she's watching c-span. I would be grinning like an idiot if I was there. My body would involuntarily be moving.

Completely, utterly unoriginal. These guys (especially the fat little stinkbox that fronts them) would be farting into mics if it weren't for Steve Reich and... Meredith Monk!!! How dare they so blatantly plagiarise i.e. give no credit for a stolen sound. Crafty little hipster businesspeople - "I know, I'll use my 'encyclopaedic' knowledge of music against the very people I can be most identified with for dollar". If you buy this the joke really is on you. Sickening. Not to mention pathetic
@1ofdiamonds If you'd like to read about her, she most certainly cites her influences, which include African high-life music, pop singers, and jam bands (and not American minimalism). The concept of rhythmic and melodic cycles is not a particularly new one, and was not one when it was introduced to the classical world by Philip Glass and Steve Reich. Even the most naive of critics should realize that the quality of a work is in the listener's experience and not the theoretical explanation of it.
@SleepyVMusic Yes, aspects of American Minimalism (i.e. Reich's "Drumming" & the rhythmic aspects of some works thereafter) were derived from African Music. So... Merrill whatever her name is has gone back to source... to cover her back (because citing Minimalism as an influence is NOWHERE near esoteric enough for a hipster with too much time on their hands now is it?). You really think she was listening to African high-life BEFORE encountering Minimalism? As an American? No. My opinion stands
My goodness, aren't we arrogant and pretentious. Would it be okay with you if the rest of us on the planet enjoyed music once in a while, or do you want to continue to keep it all for yourself?
@1ofdiamonds it's funny because not everyone influenced by someone else is a complete rip off, it's also funny because you clearly don't know what you're talking about
totally into this amazingly creative song...facebooked it for sharing. But where did they find the audience, a zombie crew filming in the next studio?
The Curt Anderson crowd is mellow and intellectual, give them a break. If it wasn't for this performance on this show, I would never have known about this amazing talent. So thank you Studio 360! Also, this version is just as magical as the studio cut in my opinion!

@1ofdiamonds Thank you, Philip, for speaking out on behalf of oppressed minimalist composers everywhere. Anyone else want in? Steve? LaMonte? Erik?
