Hey this is looks like a very good DIY Filter! I have a question about the inflow tube and how the water circulates. When the water is coming in from the tank do you start it with a syphon? Then once the canister fills up you start the water pump it gets pushed out of there and back into the tank? Thanks.
@CCichlids yes i ahve to start it with a manual syphon, suck in enough air to get the water flowing. from here it is advised to wait for the chamber to fill to max capacity to completely submerge the pump and get rid of any trapped air pockets. it is until after this I turn on the pump and the filtering begins. you should know water automatically flows into the chamber as soon as the pump starts running
I too was making a DIY canister filter, but my vessel itself was a cheap plastic container, which wasn't able to sustain the water pressure - at all. Calculated from the water height, it was only 1.066 PSI. Thanks for your video and the ideas.
BTW, nice video! I like the details and the way you put them up - neat and efficient.
Yes, in Canada our pet store carry abusively f***ing overpriced bullshits.
That mysterious orange thing, is the beneficial bacteria. If you put it out of water too long they die. It also will die if it's put under tap water (chlorine). You need that to kill the ammonia in the fish waste. It turns ammonia to nitrite which is toxic but then to nitrates which are non toxic. If you keep killing your beneficial bacteria you will end up loosing some fish. It also grows in the gravel it is commonly brown or orangeish colored.
Hi, thanks for putting up this video, it was very nicely detailed. I have a few questions I hope you don't mind answering. Could you describe more about the device you created to protect the inflow tube from being constricted by filter media please?
Also, what is the stainless steel tube fitting at the base? Does it have a specific name and is there anywhere that you would recommend getting?
What kind of sealant did you use to stick the motor to the lid?
@sylia2006 what stops the inflow tube from being crushed is the bracing on the cylindrical hoop. the bracing ived used is 2 screws coming on on either side connected at the centre with a green tube fixture.
the sstube fitting is just a hollow tube with screw ridges on its outer surface. anyhardware store with a plumbing section should have it.
any sealant that can block water and has permanent water immersion should work fine as a glue for the pump.
Nice video. Thanks for sharing.. What video edition software you used to make those text effects ? Please share.

A really original and engaging way to make tutorials. Love the titles that move with the object.
