  • This scene, no matter how many times I watch it, never fails to make me cry! -/3

  • I am still crying, need to take a break :x

  • anthony edwards was the HEART of ER!

the show should have ended when his character died!

  • what season??

  • @LuwiDuwi4 season 8!

  • I miss ER.. They have nothing but crap on TV now ,,, Im tired of reality shows.. Wipes eyes again

  • @mib20000 I miss the ER soooooo much!

the only show close to this is Greys Anatomy but they have used many plots from ER!

Green was the best story of ER in my opinion!

  • brb crying

  • Mark Greene was the best part of E.R.

  • it gets me every time

  • 2:25 - Is that Frank saying "It probably jammed; that damn machine's been on the fritz all week"?

  • @hallpriest9 Yes it is

  • YES BEST SHOW EVER ON TV Inspired me to become a nurse...true

  • omg. istill cried watching this. i remember when channel 4(UK) put the adverts on for this and played U2-ONE in the back ground, i never cried so hard in my life. it was as if i lost mark greene. it was so sad. i was watching an old clip of ER and thought i would look his death up. i cant believe i cried again after so many years, and its only a tv show. i even cried when he played goose in top gun and died in that. must be something about Anthony Edwards.

  • Man I miss watching ER!

  • @ThePac5462 so do i......i am a freakin ER fanatic and i hated that it had to end...and it pisses me off that they took it off tv completely....BEST show ever made

  • That reminds me of the film "Mr. Roberts"

    [BIG "Mr. Roberts spoilers" below]

    ^

    ^

    ^

    ^

Ensign Pulver (Jack Lemmon) was reading a letter to his ship's crew from Lieutenant Roberts (Henry Fonda) who had just transferred to an aircraft carrier. The letter from Mr. Roberts was explaining what his life was like aboard the carrier, and also how he missed his old shipmates and how fine a crew they all were...

Then Pulver read a second letter that broke the news that Roberts died in a Japanese attack.

  • I'm crying and this is only the letter

  • @123adamandreece true... the episode after this was fucking torture - in a good way, but still torture

  • So sad. I miss ER. Was a great show!

  • This was the best and saddest part of ER. It showed true emotion, and truly if I was Dr. Greene, that would be the best way to live out the rest my days. On a sunny beach with my family and writing a farewell letter. It was one of the best writin shows ever and im not the kind of person who watches a lot of series shows (mainly because they loose interest after awhile or the plot turns a totally wrong direction or both) but ER stayed strong and was very watchable for years

  • this Episode is way too Emotional for me! I lost My Father 14 Years Ago like Rachel & Ella Greene Lost their Father....

  • This scene was beautiful. It reminded me of the end of "Mr. Roberts" where the letter is read to the crew before the announcement that he died... they had to be doing a tribute to that here.

  • I was never a fan of Greene. He ticked me off in season 1 and I never could like him after that. But, I respected the work ethic of the character just not his personality. Even so, I cry every time I see this episode and I smile every time I see the season finale where Rachel comes to work in the ER where her father built his legacy. This show has been a part of my life from late-teens to early 30's. It was a phenom I'll always love it. IMHO the show was always good each of it's 15 years.

  • Greene and Carter were my favorite doctors. I believe because of ER that's part of the reason why I want to be a doctor in the future.

  • einer besten ist gagangen .... ich verbleibe in dankbarer erinnerung ...

  • Wow, I miss this show so much... When Dr. Green died I was so sad.... The show lasted so long with these people here.. I miss them......

  • @MarcusLeepapi amazing how we can get so attached to something that really doesnt exist... just in our hearts....

  • @imawhack Thanks for your comment about my comment for this great show.. It was a nice..The actors were great....

  • @myork11 No, i'm not. But I am an adult with life experience and enough common sense to understand stuff like this, and I don't have a cynical bone in my body. People tend to be loyal to something they really like - and that comes from common sense, too. No offense to you, either, and though I have what seems like a very differnt opinion, still nice talking to you.

  • GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOOOOOOOOOO!

  • @myork11 Fans of ER know why Anthony Edwards left. As for emotional attachments, that's usually because fans relate to a show or a character because of something in their own lives. Human beings cry at emoitonal times for the same reasons they laugh, get angry, etc.

  • Heartbreaking!!!!!

  • One of the saddest moments on tv....

  • I still cry everytime I see this...

  • Aww, even seeing this episode a half dozen times and knowing it was coming, I still cried watching this clip.

  • The saddest moment i ll ever seen on tv. I cry so much ever and ever i see this episode :-( i Love this emergency room !!

  • How did he die?

  • @Reddeadwolfster70 brain tumor

  • @745kiryu To wit, a glioblastoma multiforme.

  • this is still sad

  • Mark Greene's death was one of only 3 times in the history of TV that I've actually shed tears for a show. This is the first time I've seen it since I originally watched it years ago and it got me again. Anthony Edwards was this show's backbone and in a way, even though though the show tanked in it's last years, I watched for legacy reasons. This show and its characters (mostly) is an achievement in TV unmatched by few. Love it or hate it, it will always be on a list of best shows ever.

  • makes me cry every time. the hubby always makes fun of me because I get so emo over books and shows when a favorite character dies.

  • So so sad...

  • wellif you didnt cry when watching this...then sorry to say... theres something seriously superhuman about you! :'( this was so sad, i remeber just crying my eyes out when this episode was aired x

  • @WillieSlaterM I did cry when i first saw this episode and i still do i have the entire series on DVD, Mark Greene's death is as sad now as it was back then, it was great seeing Dr Greene again in season 15

  • Makes me well up all the time!

  • Sooo sad! alot of the Er is said actually

  • Never missed an episode of ER when it was on in the 90's.....BRILLIANT PROGRAMME!!! Really only watched it for Mr Clooney (so gorgeous) but Dr Greene I always thought was the one who kept the ER running smoothly and was a really caring doctor not only with his patients but with his colleagues. So so sad! Still watch re-runs on Sky Atlantic.

  • Why am I watching this? I know it always makes me cry. I loved Dr. Green.

  • Was feeling sad this morning so decided to watch this as it never fails to make the soul sob...

  • I hated it when Mark died. He was always my favorite and I remember when he was dying, I was bawling so hard. It was the first time I actually cried watching a TV show and I still get teary. When ever I see the re-runs, I dread the episode where he passes away because I'll end up crying for hours afterwards. I've never been so attached to a TV show and a Character like I was with ER and Dr. Greene.

  • ER was my soap opera. i watched that show religiously

  • mark greene never got a break lol.. he's was the writers bitch

  • i like Haleh's comment when Carter is reading Dr. Greene's words " i think my absence will hardly be felt" and Haleh says, "hmmm... i'm not so sure of that" @ 1:32

Anyone who's watched Dr. Greene's episodes from beginning to end, know he was the father figure of the ER to the younger dr's... especially to Carter, Lucy and Abby...

  • i cry every time i see it

  • Grey's Anatomy is nothing compared to ER. It has a lot more grit, drama and beleivable characters.

  • Gah, cry EVERY time!

  • you do not have a heart if you dont cry!

  • i cry every single time...

  • This scene is a re-working of the end of the play/film "Mr. Roberts," where Jack Lemmon reads a letter from Henry Fonda - and then he reads a second letter that tels him Heny Fonda has been killed. Just like this scene.

  • Carter reading this letter was done just right

  • i love the old case of er

  • który to odcinek?

  • I'm cryn watchn this I missed this ep;(

  • this scene always makes me choke up... :'(

  • Does anybody know the name of the melody at the end ?!

  • wht the..........why they have to kill mark

  • I read that Clooney said he didn't want to return for the funeral episode because he didn't want his return to take away attention from Mark's death. Egotistical bullshit. Fans care immensely for Mark, and Doug and Carol should have been there.

  • George Clooney and Carole Hathaway SHOULD HAVE BEEN AT THE FUNERAL! Or another scene to show they knew!

  • @Livibox If you watched the last season when Clooney returned and he was talking about Doctors back in Chicago, he paused and that meant he was going to say Greene but he knew what happened. But I agree....Clooney was asking too much money to come back for the episode

  • You can tell this wasn't the first take. Noah had to stop and clear his throat before he even got to the end.

  • ok so how in the hell do u get 3 dislikes on this?!?!

  • all these years later, and i'm still watching this balling my eyes out, i loved and miss this show

  • @flon57 Same!

    Cape Cod, MA

  • this is one of the few things that are/were on tv that made me cry...

  • omg, i'm such a cry baby!!

  • Props to Noah for some BAD ASS acting here.

  • This is one of the saddest ER moments... I just love this show, how it can evoke so many emotions, and how you get so wrapped up in the characters that it doesn't feel like a TV show at all...

  • this was one of the saddest episodes ever...i cant help but to cry every single time i watch it...dr greene was a great great doctor...i missed him after he left, but it continued to be the absolute best most amazingly great show ever made..nothin will ever be better than ER

  • every time I see this epsodie I cry

  • i am agree!!! the best one

  • Man, it's been YEARS since I've seen this episode, and it's still a tear jerker.

  • Can't believe how much this clip still gets to me. Dr Greene was the best character on ER. Still makes me think when I see this clip let alone the episode.

  • So sad that the best characters were all gone by the end of the series :( Greene, Ross, Weaber and Romano were the best to me.

  • @LasgalenOsten oh, come on. neela was such a great character. she encompassed so many storylines and exemplified small fragments of real life.

  • Mark was special. For me, he will be the heart of ER forever. And despite of all coments about not letting him die this way...I think, as a character, yeah, he deserved happy ending maybe the most of all of them, but if Anthony Edwards decided to leave, they made it great - because any of ER fans could possibly forget this cancer storyline.

  • This and the Bobby Simone death is the BEST ever in drama... Gets me in my gut.....

  • This still makes me cry. And the episode where he does actually die in Hawaii. I literally only watched the next season and that was it for me. ER was my favorite show, but without Dr Greene, it was just a soap.

  • It was really a sad week for me when the episode of him dieing aired. That episode where he died, the next day, a Friday, my uncle passed away from brain cancer...so this really hit home for me, and everytime I see this episode and the episode where he died, I think of my uncle!

  • This scene is amazing. There is only one change I would make to make it even better. The camera angle where it starts on Carter and gently moves over to show Susan could be a more emotional shot if Carter were to look up from the letter to look at Susan.

  • Mark Greene's death marked the beginning of the end. He was the heart and soul of the show in his self-depreciating, umimpressive and heroic way. I think it was only after his absence we started to notice how important he was as a main character. I think Carter was a good character, but in no way could he fill the shoes of Mark Greene.

  • Beautifully written, beuatifully acted - ER did it better than any other show.

  • i felt the end was nice the way lewis was repsented in last eposode

  • Both the writing and the acting are marvellous. They really created complex real-life-like characters you learnt to love and miss. Those were the days...

  • The bit where Carter reads the last bit from Corday makes me sob like a baby! So sad!!

  • after dr. greene died the show was never the same. his death marked the beginning of the end for ER.

  • im about ready to cry! i loved Dr. Greene to bad he had to die of the show. he was one of the main reason's i watched ER!!!

  • @nibornna i also think when carter left the series went down hill as well.

  • @magita666 yeah i thought so to, but carter left, and came back so many times. i kind of got use to him being gone. i alway's just thought oh well he will be back !!!

  • cómo se llama la melodía cuando Carter empieza a leer que Mark ha muerto?

  • Crying!!! :"(

  • @yo1202

    So am I

  • When I was very little (I'm 30 now) I would watch ER with a passion. I don't know why. I think the cast back then was close to perfect and there was always tragedy intwined in the story each episode.

  • chills.

  • i'm crying...

  • This is from Season 8

  • Hello msmcgregor thank-you so much for uploading this part I was shocked after watching this eposide i knew mark had a brain tumor and had left the building but i was shocked on the day the eposide was on about marks news so sad. I hope you are doing well Quadracer687 (Laura)

  • Does anyone know what season this is? Thanks!!!

  • @BlueJudi2006 this is from season 8 in the eposide the Letter BlueJudi2006 Quadracer687 (Laura)

  • Hey thanks!!

  • love maura!!

  • Episode as high as the actor´s performance on the show.

Great episodes of Dr. Greene´s death, I cried so much when I saw it on tv. Great to rewatch it.

  • carter is so cute in this szene...

  • this still brings tears to my eyes

  • aww. My eyes were tearing up during this and now i want to cry so bad *still crying as typing this*

  • omg goosebumps!!

  • This used to be such a great show. Sadly it lost its way towards the end.

However I remember this scene so well. I surprised myself by crying at the time, and watching this again still brings a lump to my throat.

  • I loved this show sad it ended

  • This is such a beautiful scene.

  • <3 ER so much

  • why did Susan and Mark break up?

  • they never hooked up. In season 2/3 Mark started having feelings for Susan. But by the time he got aroung to telling them to her. Susan had left to be with her sister and niece.

  • I know this series has a habit of getting rid of its main cast, but why did Mark have to die?!

  • I'm glad that this show ran for the 15 years that it did. It really was a great show. the original and the best

  • it's so freakin sad when one of their friends dies on this show. for most people after a death life stops for awhile but they all just have to keep on working. :(

  • how did he die?

  • He had a brain tumor.

  • best episode ever...

E.R. better than Grey's Anatomy, for real

  • @elromain i agree that it was better. but grey's is still good.

  • @elromain

i bete it is ............but the death of Mark green was very shoking case....and the viewers did not appreciate it at all.

  • @elromain Greys copies some of ER's stuff.....ER is EPIC!

  • @elromain greys anatomy is bullshit compared to ER ... ER will never be beaten

  • @elromain Yeah it wasn't all drama like greys seems to have

  • @elromain True that :D

  • i cried for like an hour after i saw this clip

  • very sad indeed. For everyone who want´s to know the song:

Israel Kamakawiwo'ole - Somewhere over the rainbow

  • Very sad moment and very sad music...

  • i have season 1 to 15 and yeah after season eight it never been the same ,but lukaand abby was like a new kind of doug and carol...i hated Morris early but the last 2 season he was strong, but who had hate the Serie Finale????

    no one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This season was good, but the short did NOT go downhill. Some of their best episodes came in the final years. Although I personally think Morris' character ruined the believability.

  • Thank you the orginal cast was so much better they were like a family I stopped watching it when he died. I watched it again when he was in the flashback. Dr Greene was the best dr ever

  • I loved dr Greene very much . This broke my heart 7 years ago and broke it again 7 years later. Not only was he nice but a great dr . The show went downhill after he left, the original cast was the best

  • One of the reasons why I love E.R! This was one of my favourite seasons.

  • This breaks my heart so much. The show hasn't been the same since he left. RIP to the greatest doctor ever in the er

  • i just started crying :(

    Good I loved Dr. Greene

  • what ever happened to genie's character?

  • She married a guy named Reggie and adopted and HIV positive baby and quit to spend more time with the baby

  • No. clooney should've just returned for his funeral.

  • I will never understand why he nor Hathaway came back for the funeral

  • @Derelictism

I think that's the beauty of the funeral scene... you only see the regular cast plus some extra's... but there are alot of other people in the background...I like to pretend they were there in the crowd.

  • @Derelictism True, but he was probably filming a movie. If he had done ER, it might have thrown off other people's jobs.

  • @Derelictism Clooney was asking too much money to return, but I agree

  • @Derelictism at least for a single show

  • very sad....it has never really been the same since Dr. Greene died.

  • My mum is a big ER fan, so naturally I am too, albeit about 5 seasons behind the TV air dates. Although I already knew that Mark died, I remember watching this and the following episode, and being in floods of tears. I've seen the two episodes loads of times now, but i still wind up crying, it's such a sad moment. And I can't listen to "somewhere over the rainbow" either. I just wish that Susan and Mark could have gotten together. They were meant for each other in my opinion.

  • It's amazing how fast times goes. The best gift that you can give anyone is your time. It's priceless.

  • I have a very vivid memory of sitting on my couch watching this, I must have been 10, never watched an episode of ER, but convinced my mom to let me watch the beginning cuz it was adverised that something big was gonna happen in the first few minutes. My mom loved the show and I just remember her being so shocked and crying when Carter read the letter. Since then, I've watched ER every week.

  • D: thats so sad!

  • Oh, that's is really sad!

  • Does anybody know the name of the song that is playing while Dr. Carter reads Dr. Corday's letter? Or the composer?

  • Susan and Mark belong together!

  • susan never stopped loving him from the day she left him at the train station in season 3

  • i cried so hard during this episode! my family made fun of me so much!

  • me too..it is not a shame...

  • That's pretty heartless (to make fun of you for that). This is not something to make fun of. I know it's only a TV show character, but people die of brain tumours in real life all the time - and in real life, it certainly isn't as "pretty" as it's portrayed here. It's hell.

  • carter is so hott :P

omg this is soooooo sad :'[

  • This episode is so good... I've been watching ER since the begining. Love love Dr Green! That song make me crying......

    Love from Quebec!

  • Does anyone know what was the music played during/after the funeral?

(not the "rainbow song", but the piano and violin instrumental song)

Am looking for so long... pls help.

  • is this the original CTV broadcast?

  • This episode combined with the one where you actually see him die...Anthony Edwards' actual last episode...were some of the most gut-wrenching, well-acted and ugly-cry inducing television. I used to love this show.

I do agree that it would have been moving if you saw George Clooney in later funeral scene. It'd have been a clasy move on Clooney's part, but now that I think of it, the producers prob. thought that one shot would take away from the overall meaning.

  • One of the most heartbreaking episodes.
