My only disagreement with your comment is that this debate was essentially about foreign policy. Economics were only touched on because it is so hot right now. So really a tie is bad for McCain because foreign policy is supposed to be his best subject.

It was supposed to be about IR but it wasnt. The first half hour ( The most important) was about economy and I think McCain won that section of the debate (should have def been Obama). Right off the bat it felt like Obama was lecturing and even yelling at the audience ( I was like "Stop yelling at me" .It was very negative feeling.

In comparison McCain was more casual and conversational. If you believe that the person who is elected is the person that the audience would rather go out for a beer with then McCain won. Its all just a popularity contest. A bunch of ugly actors that couldnt make it in hollywood....

It was a 2 hour long debate and the first 30 minutes was about the ecomony and both had to limit their answers b/c neither could legitimately answer the question posed. Jim wanted them to say that they support a plan that had not been put together yet. McCain lied about obama's stance on taxes. Obama has stated the same plan even againt Hillary. I can;t give McCain points for lying. Obama called McCain out on his own plan and McCain did not respond. I do not see that has a victory.

The last 1-1/2 hour was about Foreign policy and Obama held his own. Its no question that McCain knew the topic, but he did not seal the deal. And that is what hurt him. What will stand out the most is Obama saying that Mccain said that the war would be short & quick & we would look liberal and he was wrong. Also, Mccain was wrong about tactic v. strategy. the surge was a tactic. And those people who actually understand the topic will call him on it.

But most importantly, he did come across condescending. He didnt even look at Obama when they shook hands before the debate started. He tried to tell jokes to an audience that followed the rule of "no participation". He came across awkward and pretentious. Obama may have said John is right too often, but in the long run it will work in his favor. He could have said something about McCain constant "Obama don't understand". but beyond that, Obama stayed the course and McCain did not wow the masses
