@maidmoira And Torville and Dean electrified the audience with this again decades later. Their performance on ice was unforgettable. Thanks for stopping by and for your comment!
@tiptoe221 Raft was a tough guy. Just happened to be a tough guy who got his start dancing. This ain't as easy as Raft and Lombard make it look. In fact, they couldn't even perform some of the moves-long shots are of professionals Veloz and Yolanda . . .but I seem to have already disclosed that info. Best New Year to you tippytoes.
@1983CUEVAS The name of the song is "Bolero". I can understand how this could be confusing to a Spanish speaking person since the Spanish word bolero also refers to any slow tempo dance music. Just to make it really confusing, Bolero was composed by a Frenchman, Maurice Ravel!
@womba68 George was an excellent dancer, better than Carole~ nevertheless, he and Carole didn't do the difficult parts. The distant shots of the difficult lifts were of professionals Veloz and Yolanda.
@fvrrljr It wasn't the song. If she rocked your world with Sheb Wooley's "One-eyed, One-horned, flying Purple People Eater" playing in the background, I submit you'd now love that song instead.
With all his tough guy roles until recently I never knew Raft danced. His dancing films are not as well known as Cagney's Footlight Parade and G M Cohan Story. There's a funny clip on here of Raft as the mystery guest on What's My Line as he confuses the panelists after he tells them he is known for being a dancer in films but not in musicals. The panel is totally confused, and has no clue, until Steve Allen take a stab and says the only one he can think of that meets the criteria is Raft.
Frank Veloz of the dance team Veloz and Yolanda was hired to do the choreography for this film, knew Raft intimately from Roseland championship contest days, both having grown up on the west side of Manhattan and born around the same time.
At some point it was decided that Veloz and Yolanda should double for Raft and Lombard in long shots, especially those powerful lifts that require many years to perfect. V&Y, moreover, went uncredited for this, which was not at all uncommon in those days.
wow, raft and lombard lighting it up. carole lombard would wear some of the most revealing things in the pre-code era, she was making a half a million dollars a year in the 30's.
this movie was released about 6 months before strict "decency" censorships were placed on hollywood by the feds.
also, "bolero" the song by maurice ravel had only been written since 1928. it was still a relatively new sensation in 1934.
Wonderful. I haven't seen this film for MANY years. Can't remember much about the story line though I remember that George was supposed to be dying in this scene. Wish these films would be issued on DVD
It's probably been 50 years since I watched the whole movie. If I recall, George Raft's character is dying when they perform this dance. What a great movie.
@NickyD52 You are right, he was, I finally watched the movie & before the movie I always wondered why Carole looked worried & Raft was out of breath. Good movie & whatta great pair!!! LOVE Lombard & Raft together. George was very much in love with Carole & they dated for awhile.
I only got to see this movie 1 time. It went off 2am and I had to be at work at 8am. I cried myself to sleep. This dance scene is ... I just wish I knew how to phrase how wonderful it is to watch. I wanted to be Carole Lombard dancing with George Raft sooo bad!!!!!!!!!!!
This scene is fantastic. The way he moves his hips, and everything else, is just incredibly sexy.
Love your username, by the way. "Drifting and dreaming" has always been one of my favorite phrases. And it's a great way to spend the time thinking about George Raft.
George Raft had been a dancer for years and a great one. Carole Lombard also di her own dancing in this. This dance was really racy for it's time and so wonderful to watch after all these years. Sadly Carole Lombard died so young in a plane crash while selling war bonds for the war.
I love this video!!! The music is fantastic-always loved "Bolero" wish I had the movie!!! According to books & such, Raft kept a large picture of Lombard above his bed for years & Carole was quoted as saying that George Raft was the best lover she ever had! I can see that, just by this video-Wow!! Very sexy for 1934 Thanks for this!
I remember being haunted by this music and the film when I was a very very young child. I do believe that it has played a very important part in the love I have of classical music today. Thanks for posting.
That was some dance!! I think I read a long time ago that George Raft and Caesar Romero started out in Hollywood as dancers. If this is true ,you can really see it in the way George Raft dances in this movie, very graceful on his feet, Carole Lombard also was beautiful to watch.
@ebfan41 A number of male stars we often think of as "tough guys" got their start as hoofers; Jimmy Cagney and Christopher Walken come immediately to mind. The way they move is so precise, so athletic, so powerful, it's astonishing, and not in the least effiminate. I can understand why women got wet between the legs watching this back in 1934: it was hot stuff then and it's still hot today. Art with a capital "A"!
omg, torville and dean stole this dance, every godamn move, omg

Lombard was dating Russ Columbo in 1934. I beleive they were engaged. It would be
interesting to determine if the movie was made before, during or after Columbo's untimely death.

Were Carole and George truly dancing? The use of long shots make it appear there were doubles standing in for them.
But this was sexy as all get out regardless!
