  • 40 mpg on premium fuel in an 1800 lb car?? What is wrong with this piece of crap.

  • smart cars in europe do upto 70 mpg in the uk with a 699cc engine.this guy is biased and i would not listen to anything he says.i dont own a smart but have driven one on a few occasions.

  • This fucken scooter uses premium gas? Did i hear him right? :0 fuck me!!! :0 :0 :0

  • Ugly car

  • Smart... the car that went into the idiots market...

  • i love mine!

  • The prius gets better mialage, but he conveniently forgets to point out you pay more. Also the car uses straight Gas, not hybird technology, theres no big battery to replace. Oh.......and no Fit or prius convertibles are availible. Face it......If you want and can afford a huge car...nothing is going to change your mind

  • Is this guy racing or commuting? im confused?

  • they already sold over 50,000 smarts in the USA, how many volts with tax-payer funding has GM sold so far? oh yeah, the tiny front tires can be replaced with larger ones that turn this car into a great handling go cart, take exit ramps at 55mph, no problem! the car handles much better with 195/50-15 tires all around, a set of wheels and tires cost me $500, balanced and installed. my mileage in the summer exceeds 50mpgs in stop and go driving and have topped 60mpgs on the highway.

  • HAHAHA I like to read all this funny comments! You people should be in the comedian busines ! Every single one is so funny and creative ! There is comment about discrimination about homosexual, about fat people, about racionality etc....... I don't know how would youtube be without you guys! LMFAO

  • This guy probably from BMW

  • Does it get 100mpg Well YES if it's the Cdi Diesel model available here in the Uk and the rest of Europe.

Is it safe ? Well YES just check it out on the Tiff Neddel Top Gear video.

Anyone given a radical car to test that is totally unique should have an open mind on how practical it is to own and run.

When you start comparing it to a Hummer which was a military vehicle and should have remained one then you know the review will be biased.

The Smart is a City car Remember That

  • I love this car....and I hate people who hate it. So Consumer Reports I HATE YOU.

  • Pretty much useless out here in the country.

  • we have had a smart Cabriolet for two years now. With a thrity five minute commute each way 5 days a week under stop and go conditions we spend 7 gallons a week in this car. Now that is real world driving with about 250 lbs in the car (driver and school teacher stuff) It is reliable and once you learn how to hit the shift points it is peppy too. you do truely forget you are in a tiny car. And parking lots feel huge in this car. We love it.

  • I have and love this car. for 100s of reasons not mentioned. he nvr said parking!

  • he probably are used to drive a truck. Smart is a city car, not build to race around. And it is small. No one goes to town with a truck unless you are the delivery man!

  • it's a nice car to drive. damn honda..wtf!

  • jesus no one's buying this car after this

  • you suck dude, How much you got from gas company?

  • this guy is right...about the transmission, the grip and yes, you get blow by the wind if you drive with 140km/h (85mph)...you can not compare the smart with other cars. Its more like a motocycle-scooter with a roof!...but it is the smallest car on the market and its fun and easy to drive in the city! a great piece of engineering and absolutely safe...

  • IS THIS A REVIEW OR LETS NAME ALL THE BAD THINGS ABOUT IT.

  • from what i heard when a big truck goe by you dont notice the diff its like been in a regular car

  • Well this seems like one of the most bias reviews I've ever seen. He is obviously a honda fanboy also, because he only gives one example and says "Its a much better car".

  • It will get 100mpg if it's the 799cc Cdi diesel.

If its the gas engine and with the American gallon being smaller than the gallon sold in the United Kingdom it will not get the economy it deserves.

American consumers have always loved their huge automobiles and they simply are not ready for a car as small as the Smart.

Yes it has sold in decent numbers but the Us find it too small.

It's more suited to the European market not the Us.

  • @llandudnoboy he did compare it to other cars in the US gallon if the car gets the mpg he says it does then almost every manufacturer's entry level car sold here in the US gets relatively the same MPG while being larger, safer and having more HP.

that's probably why Americans don't want to buy it.

  • This guy is a biased ass. Not what a reviewer of anything should be. Closed-minded much?

  • @ThreeDaysOfDale No he's NOT!..He's just stating facts..It seems you already own one or are just not smart enough to take advise. And your 13 likes are idiots too..That in no way makes you correct..Point in case OBAMA!

  • I miss my geo metro!

  • WHAT A DORK NO TASTE

  • how did i get from the jeep grand cherokee to the smartcar?

  • NTY don't want it,looks like a death trap and for no reason at all.

  • This car is meant for city driving, we all know that, but it still isn't worth spending money on.

  • Gimme 4 wheels, a steering wheel and a sardine can and I could build a better car than this. Why would anyone wanna risk being rear-ended in one of these things? You could get hit by a radio flyer and wind up in the hospital. Pathetic.

  • @zorlac774 get rear-ended on a motorcycle and you die, i have a turbo smart and i get 53 mpg and it has a roll cage, give me a smart any day over a motorcycle, i can ride in rain sleet and snow :)

  • @574a

Was a Yugo really all that bad? Please tell me. I've never driven one. I'd enjoy the story.

  • Does this guy seem biased? Or is it just me?

  • @summer20105707 no it is not just you, he is very, very biased

  • This car is not for racing!

  • Sorry, this guy is an idiot... Has no clue of the real purpose of this car...

    What an asshole

  • I've driven one of these and had a Geo Metro in the past. The Metro was a far better car performance and fuel economy wise but lacked the interior quality of this car. For the price of this car the Ford Fiesta would be a better deal.

  • I have a smart and love it nothing that he says is true. I am getting 42 mpg running around here in the Catskill mountains and close to 50 on a highway. The transmission is jerky but it is a manual no different then if you shifted it yourself. You find that it smooths out because you adapt to it.

  • are these Turbo Diesel's or gas? i always thought they were TDI's by Mercedes?

  • I don't believe this review is from the real Consumer Reports. He is being sensationalistic and overly strident. It just doesn't seem like a review that Consumer Reports would condone.

  • everyone bashing the reviewer has a smart car and this video makes them insecure! the car is everything he said, so what if it's a city car? thats not the only place it's sold, or used. and if you live in the city then you still leave sometimes right? the car is pathetic and ugly, is terrible to drive, and is expensive and not as fuel efficient as you'd expect from a car like that. the car is awful

  • I have one here in Puerto Rico!!! i love when i buy the car!!! but now i hate it. in the interior everything do noises like cracking!!! i dont know cus is just have 15,000miles on it. Im going to trade this smart for a Mazda 3! I dont recommend this car to anybody! its just for people whit money who wanna go outs the weekends and things like that!! and is not to stable in the highway specially the windy days!! sorry if i dont spell well the English but im from Puerto Rico and we spanish here!!!

  • this guy's a dusche'.... its a city car. why would consumer reports hire a dork that hates small cars do a report on one?

  • Dude sounds whiny as h*ll...potentially more annoying than the car. Let's not forget the car is quite successful and has actually sold pretty well. Not the best, but definitely a bigger statement than showing up in a banal as h*ll Honda Fit.

  • just because you're great at creating 2 big world wars doesnt mean you're good at creating a great car!!!

  • whats the cars score

  • if u guys wanna die soon buy a smart car hahaha

  • i must be the exception: i absolutely LOVED the transmission when i test drove one. maybe it's because im used to driving a 5-speed, but it was really smooth when i drove it.

  • i love this car. this reviewer sucks

  • YOU GOT THAT RIGHT !

  • THIS REVIEWER SUCKS

  • this reviewer should be fired i mean cmon no its not the titanic for size and not a veyron for speed and handling its for a couple that need good fuel milage not for hauling a camper

  • HE IS TALKING ABOUT THE CONS SO ITS VERY GREAT INFO

  • i was thinking of buyind one but at 39 mpg not thatgreat as I can get 20 mpg from my SUV

  • I totally disagree with this review. It is very negative! This is a 2 seater city car with great fuel consumption, NOT a family car. So why do you expect a smooth motorway drive or a big boot? It was never built with these things as a priority. And in fact, the boot is very big considering the size of the car. Saying the car isnt fun to drive is also untrue, it really depends on the person driving it. I love it, my friend who has owned a dozen of big cars finds this more fun to drive!!!

  • I expected the front end of the car to lift off the ground when he sat on the tailgate, 2:31.

  • @swootser Haha :L

  • U guys r just angry because u didn't see this review before you bought this piece of crap. 18 grand for a car that is just supposed to get you around town? That is just silly. This was made to give rich people, who live wasteful lives, peace of mind so they don't feel too guilty heating/cooling their sprawling estates.

  • everyone argues that theres other practical cars out there with more room for similar money...but the smart has character. whereas other cheap subcompacts are more like tools, the smart is a toy you can truely love.

  • He dresses like all republican americans...

  • Just a thought, but this "city car" is worse city gas mileage the a Ford Escape Hybrid, which really says something about the engineering about this car. Plus, i've been in one, and what he said is true, its a very stiff and jerky car. Personally, i would get the Ford Fiesta instead,it gets better mileage and is actually well engineered.

  • The smart has its pluses, as people here are fully trying to defend. But I agree with the review. I would take a sub-compact like the accent over this.

  • Byist honda reviewer!!

  • This Reviewer is ridiculous. Lately Consumer Reports has started to Suck at reviews and recommendations.

  • Give this reviewer a slap.

He had nothing positive atall to say about it such as how easy it is to park and manouver through heavy traffic.

The problem with the Prius especially here in the Uk is its price £20,000 over twice the price of the Smart and if you drive the CDi Smart it returns economy far better than the Prius

  • @llandudnoboy This is an American review program, prices are all different, and the smart is a little bit too small for our roads. Something like the Fit/Accent/Aveo is a much better fit. I love smart cars, I think they are very neat, but they are not practical when people here, for some stupid reason, think a gas guzzling half-ton truck is the best choice to commute in!

  • didn't even say that you can park three of these diagonally in one space, or that you can park in perpendicular to the curb, or that you zip in and out of slow moving traffic (which I do all the time). this reviews always suck, almost every time it's a advert for a better selling competitor, come one a prius? really?

  • small suitcase!??!? i could fit a body in there easily...;))

  • I hate stupid people

  • this guy is a moron, its a little town and city car only, this is missing the point totally

  • OMG this is not meant for all that! he's doing TOO much in it! IT'S A CITY CAR! and The cars he named ARE NOT the same price! ugh!

  • This Video Is Just Your Opinion About The Car And Honestly I Driven One Of Those And Its A Cool Little Car

  • save yourself some money get a power wheels. they sell them at walmart.

  • Wat a idiot!!!

    We all want Smart cars!!

  • We all want Smart cars!!!!

  • scion IQ is going to embarass this pos XD

  • These cars have been in Canada for a few years now, and the knocks against them are valid. Pity the fool who buys one, then has to stand in line at the Mercedes dealership to back-order the same failure-prone parts other Smart owners did--- while rubbing shoulders with "well-heeled" Mercedes owners who stare down their noses at him like he was vermin. But like the Yugo, these cars are the perfect size and shape to fit inside a dumpster.

  • @aviator902s lol They sell them at a Chevy dealer in my state...

  • This would be good for small to medium cities and getting to school or work and back. But I wouldn't get one. I want a Chevrolet Volt. It's cool.

  • The funny thing is 98% of people that buy this car is goin to trade it in..... Ha

  • Id buy it for going store and such

  • So according you guys who commented that smart for two supposed to be city car we have to deduce that city car should be crap and a very expensive crap. Come on guys Japanese making city cars that are small handle well, roomy CHEAP for almost half a century. No one has an obligation to admire or even like a crap car such as smart for two just because it is made in europe.

  • @Fussinated Besides, the Japanese have been making better cars than the Europeans since the early 80s.

Why buy a fussy Smart that will fall apart at 30,000 k/m, when you can be like me, and get a 16 y/o Suzuki Swift w/115,000 miles that still runs like new and returns almost 50mph highway?

This car is a pointless fashion accessory for twinks and hairdressers. It's 15 mins. are long gone.

  • Smart people......duhhh lol. People who want basic urban transportation and who don't have multiple kids to haul around......You gotta change your "bigger is better, owe I need go anywhere full-sized dodge during SUV just to feel dominant on road" shallow American psyche and think practical.

  • Nice car (I just took it for a test drive today), but horrible report and reporter. One word for you, 'reporter' dork...um hum, guy - objectivity. One would almost think that you work for Toyota as many times as you said Prius! Boy, and Toyota is doing so well these days - NOT SO MUCH!!

  • Dear LORD this guy has an annoying voice.

  • Someone forgot to tell this guy it's supposed to be a "city-car".

  • It disappoints me that this guy didn't mention how much the car costs and more importantly, how safe it is!! Consumer reports sucks ass when it comes to such things. Speaking of safety. When it comes to this so called Smart car, I have 5 words for everyone, "Prepare to meet your maker".

  • The Smart is a piece of junk.

  • @SpeedingStudent Right on.

  • @SpeedingStudent not just junk a SMART piece of junk

  • Well, I do ! The speedo goes up to 100 but the computer limits the speed to 90MPH. How long ago did you take the test drive? Was it a 450 or a 451? It's possible that the older model 450's were limited to 70 MPH. I picked up an 09 451 five days ago and was doing 80 MPH on the highway yesterday, they are sooo much fun, like a street legal go-kart!! If you want more info, go to smart car of america. com for any more questions or just enjoy reading all of the other questions.

  • @WesleyConoway Do you own a Smart Car?

  • Please do your homework, the cars top speed is 90 MPH.....

  • there is absolutely no reason for an american to buy this car. It runs on premium fuel, it's unsafe, its uncomfortable, definately not stylish, and it takes more gas than the Corolla. however its a good thing to have if you live in europe

  • piece a junk of car.. good review CR

  • Finally an honest review of this piece of shit. This thing is for yuppies who want to think they're better than the rest of us.

I drive an 09 VW Rabbit. Seats 5, plenty of cargo space, fun to drive, cost about 17,500 dollars, and gets about 33 mpg on the highway.

I guess if you have no friends, live in the city, also own a truck for when you need to move some shit, and enjoy wasting money, the Smart Car would be perfect for you.

  • why the hell is he comparing this to a regular car? You won't go on the hi-way (or very rare) and besides, this is GREAT for the city or going to work. you won't win races, but who gives a shit

  • Hey, does the "smart car" come with a complimentary Funeral Package? I mean, if I'm gonna die from driving this piece of crap I oughta get something right? If you buy this piece of crap, you are dumb not smart! Face it!

  • Have you actually seen the crash tests? You'll probably die sooner in something like a cobalt.

  • i got an 08 civic brand new for 16,000, it got space for 5 people and there bags, is way better built and way more reliable than this. 0-60 in 8.6 seconds top speed 126, and it get 37mpg on REGULAR gas, so why would anyone pay over 20,000 to get 39 mpg on PREMIUM gas in this little death trap

  • Were all Entitled to our own opinion. Stop hating on Smart cause you don't like it, that's why this word is made up with different cars for different ppl with certain tastes ! End of story....Period

  • is it me or is that guy really pessimistic?!

  • The word is honest or thoughtful.

  • Whatever, I plan to purchase a brand new SMART passion coupe right after my 2007 Tiburon is paid off. I LOVE those little cars.

  • OH ya btw I bet if I had a corvette I could make it look dangerous on the racetrack!

  • geo metro

    datsun 510, 610,b210,

    nissan sentra ,200sx

    subaru justy ,

    volkswagon bug

    honda civic

    ALL BETTER!!!!!!!

  • yeah its dumb

bet your ass its more reliable than any modern mopar!

  • This guy is an idiot. Probably owns stock in Hummer. I've owned a fortwo for 18 months now, and love it. I often get 50 mpg out of it, never have trouble with steering, insurance is cheap, maintenance is cheap, and is a lot of fun. But why am I arguing with you, ConsumerReports? The very same people who declared the Avalanche a brilliant vehicle because of fold down rear seats and cargo access. Ooh! I need to sort my 2x4s while driving down the highway!

  • I agree with the reviewer- this car is an accessory. If you want a car for utility use, or even city driving, there are much better options out there

  • Wow, this reviewer sucks. The car isn't for driving across the country or driving it on the highway regularly. It's an inner-city car. It's small, it's compact, and perfect for the city. If you're going to bash the car because it's so small and the ride feels "bumpy", you're clearly not understanding the reasoning behind this car.

  • @arkim101 Really? There are small cars no bigger than smartfortwo who does what it does and yet have a good ride handling etc. And guess what they are mainly Japanese. So, if you drove one of them then you will know what a city car is. My suggestion try a Daihatsu Sirion 1.0 cheaper and has more mpg or a Suzuki Swift 1.3 both better cars for the money and serve the same purpose.

  • @arkim101 Well, this car is only a fashion statement. You can get a base cobalt for less than the cost of a base smart. They get comparable mileage, the cobalt is safer, faster, more reliable, more versatile, and you won't look like a total idiot driving one. It also has a way better ride. So, only a total idiot that is trying to fit into trends would buy one. Please explain how in any way it would be a good use of money.

  • @migetman2805 Bingo.

  • @arkim101 Hey idiot.. Do you think you are some kinda genius.. Thats why he said Honda fit is a much better car.. Small, safe and yet fuel efficient

  • @arkim101

I don't like the ForTwo because, for what it is, there are better cars.

The Nissan Versa, the Honda Fit and the Scion xD come to mind:

More functional with greater cargo capacity and the ability to accommodate four passengers

    Superior ride and handling

Superior power with good fuel economy using regular fuel (premium fuel not required)

Slightly larger but still very practical for inner city commutes and parking

Easier to find parts and service when required

    Priced competitively

  • @Watcher3223 couldn't have put it any better. the versa, xd, fit, fiesta, and the yaris are waaaaaay more practical, safe on the highway, more powerful, and get the same or better fuel economy. a fortwo would be nice for 18 holes of golf though! lol

  • @arkim101 its an american company (consumer reports)

in america, there is not much inner city. besides places like NY, chicago, and san francisco, this car is nearly useless

  • These cars are all over the place in Spain. We need the Yugo to make a come back.

  • Kicked in the nutz...Hard.

  • I get the feeling they don't like it lol.

  • That's a death trap, my neighbor bought one ($20,000) because they want to be "EURO" cool BUT it's not cool driving a coffin...they don't care.

  • the smart fortwo is more of a gimmick than it is functional

  • This "reviewer" is terrrrrrible.. reminds me of Peter Dante in an Adam Sandler movie or something.

  • im thinking mr consumer reports doesnt like change...

  • This is the reason this so called unbias company it BS. I mean he drives it on a flippin race track. Hello earth calling moron. Its a 71hp car motorcycles have more HP then it. Second did you even attempt to drive it on a highway?? There is a video of this car in a high speed chase from the police doing near 100 so gee I guess it can hit highway speeds. And to the wind boucing around thing I drive a full size van at times also and the wind pushes it around so I guess that is also dangerous!

  • every car ever made is tested on a race track, so because this one is so weak it shud be excused??? i dont think so!!

  • It´s really sad to know that this kiddo is a really liar. Consumer report???? I don't think so, many owners of this car, including me, believe that Smart For Two is an excellent car. I really expected a better report, beyond the idiot mind of this young boy. Maybe he tough he was going to drive a ferrari, hey kid, wake up now!!!! this is a Smart Car, a City Car. I recommend you to read the user manual just to know how many secure systems have this great car. Grow up kid!!!!!!!!

  • this report sucks!!

    Everything he says is bullshit!!

  • I think the review is really pessimistic. You have to see everything in perspective. Of course its not as comfy as a chevrolet or so... I thing is true, the price is not low. In Europe its even higher with less standard features.

  • The review is absolutely negative about the car. They are testing it as if it were a race car! It's not a car made for speed obviously, its made for fuel economy.

Wish consumer reports werent so negative.

  • PLEASE...isn't this what their job is, to test the crap out of something to make sure it works? And make sure drivers are safe? The thing looks like it would tip over instantly. Can you imagine driving this deathtrap in snow or on ice? That's not really fuel efficient either. I owned a Geo Metro back in the day and it was 50mpg and was bigger than this pseudo "smart" car.

  • I have drove this "death trap" in the winter and I can tell you that it handles better then my old sable ever did. We got hit with near 6 inches of snow while I was at work. I drove 20 miles with snow at times dragging on the bottom of the car. I saw other drivers getting suck I made it home. Car handled excellent. Safety features worked when needed. So if you dont know what you are talking about SHUT UP!

  • Glad you arrived home safe and sound, however, seeing the way that thing handled in this report, I wouldn't trust it as far as I could throw it. Considering its size, even I could chuck the thing.

You saw other drivers getting suck? Wow, that must have been interesting. Maybe a reason why they didn't want to go home.

  • holy crap 6 inches of snow lol, try it out in 6 feet of snow

  • epa mpg testing in the nineties wasn't as accurate as it is now. I heard somewhere that the metro got somewhere in the high thirties to low forties.

  • They are being honest, which is the most important thing. Would you rather be a mushroom, kept in the dark and fed B.S. or be given an opinion by a reputable and neutral company which their job is to test and evaluate products for our safety?

  • he is jus sayin there are better car out there, like a prius faster more power alot more room and more mpg

  • Finally a review that sees the smart car for what it is. An overpriced car the size of a shoe. Its quite shocking to see the slowest, worst handling, least space, and most dangerous car getting so popular.

Before touting the good crash ratings the Smart received, look up how crash ratings work, they're based on crashes with cars of equal size and weight. The real world has large cars. Getting hit by a Expedition would not leave enough organs intact to even identify passengers of a smart car.

  • Thank you voice of reason!

  • gee whiz, another idiot who thinks they know what they are talking about, it's like saying the Honda Fit is rubbish because it's off road capabilities pale in comparison to a H2's.

  • Another IDIOT on youtube !!!

  • I own a Smart Car and I love it!! There is nothing that i would change about the car!!

  • what the hell?! i expected a good car review, but instead you bashed the car saying thats its bad. you guys have clearly no idea on how this car is very awesome and how good it is.

  • Makes me wonder if the dealer slipped me a "special" smart car. Mine accelerates well, handles nice, shifts nicely, handles the highways and gets outstanding mileage.

  • So, he is comparing smart to Prius which is at least cost $10K more. Not very bright guy.

  • While the smart fortwo isn't for everyone, there is no way it could ever be called a bad car.

Having driven my fortwo over Pennsylvania mountains, in cut-throat DC traffic, and frequently on interstates, I have experienced *none* of the issues he talks about. At 75 the car is a tiny bit skittish- by no means unsafe or uncomfortable. Once the car breaks in the transmission is just fine. As for fuel economy, it's third best in the nation and costs far less than the hybrids that beat it.

  • this is a biased review and the guy clearly doesnt like the idea of this car (look at the way he slams it around when he's opening the trunk). He fails to mention the awesome safety features, and that this car is in a different mindset than regular cars like the fit. My wife and I have 2, and while the car has its quirks, and it may not be for everyone, we both love having them. Drove mine from SF to Vegas, and it was the most comfortable road trip I've been on. look for some better reviews

  • it may be consumer reports, but i doubt this guy works for them anymore, what a moron, complete idiot,i have a 2008 cabrio, and let me tell u it drives great,it may be a little underpowered but i didn't buy a corvette dumbass, its a smart car, great on gas.back to the underpowered comment,i drive on a major hwy and i keep up with all the other cars fine.the guy doing this report forgot 1 main reason to buy it,THE FUN FACTOR

  • BTW I get 45 mpg and I step on it a lot. Drive normal and you should get over 50 easily!!!

  • TOTALLY WRONG!!!!!!!!!! I just got a 2009 Smart Fowtwo Cabriolet. I love it and its not underpowered and feels great on the freeway at 80. Don't trust what this guy says its just one persons opinion and his is BAD!!!
