In the UK- which is far more secular than the USA- the law is what determines what is right and wrong. Originally this followed Christianity but it has evolved away from religion.
I am a devout atheist- and civilised! I don't need an ancient book to know what is wrong or right, my conscience exists outside the boundaries of religious dogma.
Fundermental religion has brought terror, bigotry, and hate and is anything but civilised.
Religions have in the past said that they are the ultimate solutions. Today the new intolerant fundamentalism is the idea that "Science" can explain everything therefore only "we" have all the answers. The bottom line is that man has a tendency to be arrogant and think he knows all the answers that should be forced on others.
Is civilization before religion that much different for when it existed? Do we still not fight for land or currency or even for survival? Its the same except instead of tribe vs tribe its now faction vs faction. Civilization will never change with or without religion.
As for your comment on strongest will its only the fault of the people that belived thier will was inferior which is what happens when you follow a God or higher being. Your bottom line is absolutly correct. But when you look for answers its more logical and effective to refer to data and experiment than in hope and patience.
There was no civilization before religion. They develped together. Try to name a civilization that didn't have a religion. Before religion, the ethical standard was the strongest rules. You can turn back the ethical clock, if you can still find an uncivilized tribe somewhere. If you think there might not be a difference, you should go live amoung them for a while to find out. ;-)
That is not a good argument, religion dogmatically states that their story is the true story and the evidence..well..is their belief.
Scientists have a theory (their story) which is thoroughly tested, honed, re-tested by other scientists etc. Science has enough knowledge to know that there is much more to discover- it is always evolving.
Well i dont know if you can put communism under the same category as nazism...but thats niether here nor there. Cristianity and most other religions uses fear to get you to do the right thing(in my opinion)I think that we should just do good for goodness sake and not expect or hope for a reward at the end of the tunnel (heaven)
I'm not particularly religious or praticing, but I would say religion uses faith to make you do good, not just fear. The problem is that if you make up your own moral standard, there is no reason not to murder, cheat, steal, etc. Hitler, Stalin and Moa would probably tell you that they were enlightened men and just doing what's "best" for humanity, aka doing good for goodness' sake.
The point is that when a moral standard (provided by religion) has evolved over thousands of years, it may not always be possible for individuals or even a generation to conceive why things are done a certain way. There is such a thing as "collective intelligence" that operates over centuries. Psychology is not a hard science and it is not possible to explain human psychology completely with current science.
I think people should have there own different moralities and i think that religion prevents us from doing that. Its important to make your own morals even if someone esle thinks its evil or wrong becouse becouse you become your own person. The more different we are the more we learn and benefit from each other. Stalin and Adolf did have thier own morals but it was the people that gave into them and didnt hav thier own morals to follow making it no different from religion.
What you are talking about is chaos. Everyone making ip their own values is a return to the times before civilisation. Religion is the basis for civilization. If everyone makes up their own values then the person with the strongest will wins, such as a Hitler.
WTH is wrong with katie holmes, she was raised a Christian by her devout parents and she lets this raving lunatic seduce her into bearing his child, marrying him and joining his evil cult. Now she is trapped, her life slowly turning into a living a nightmare... so sad
Religion is something that has evoloved over thousands of years. Just to say it's rediculous and throw it out, seems to me arrogant. It's like someone saying I don't need my liver, what does it do for me and throwing it away. If you throw out religion it will be replaced by something else, maybe Faschism, Nazism, Scientology, Communism which may not be an improvement.
or we could just replace it with humanity. Being people, instead of objects supposedly munipulated by an invisible force. I'm sorry, but I believe in science...not scientology lol..but science. I don't mind if others believe in something though, that's a human right.
I have a Master's Degree in physics, myself. Religion is part of the psychology of mankind and psychology is something that is not well- explained by science. I'm just saying if you don't have a moral frame of reference many people tend to replace it with cults and dictators. If you replace religion with "humanity", many times you get a "human" face like that of an Adolf Hitler, Stalin or Mao that fills the gap.
I agree that could happen, but not in my case. My grandfather is a preacher "church of god" but I don't agree with the bible word for word. I believe in the obvious, such as not harming yourself or others, but aside from that that's about it.
Search Google for Hubbard's "fair game" policy. The scientologist say that they don't believe in this policy any longer, but their actions don't seem to reflect that denial. Anyway, it is good to see a young person with an inquisative mind, who is trying to understand something.
It's a nice project for you, kid. Keep up the good work. But Cruise is not just being absurd. Some people believe things that it is difficult for others to conceive. When he talks about SPs being only in the history books, he is refering to a policy of Scientology's founder Hubbard of eliminating opponents to Scientology (SP) by whatever means necessary. It may be hard to believe, but that is what he is talking about.

Religion has a pyschological component that science can not really address.
