Let me add to Mr. Jagtisher's comments. Our Radio Ceylon was a much popular station in the fifties and sixties in All Asia. We had some very well known Announcers such as Manohar Mahajan and Sunil Dutt who later became an actor in Bollywood.

Hindi songs could be heard often in good old Ceylon, that is how the Sri Lankans had inherited these properties as a continuous sensation from one generation to another.

Further, we Sri Lankans consider all those artists [singers/MDs' Actors/Actresses etc] as kind of "sacred people". Also we consider that they have been "gifted" to the WORLD by the God.
