The Breath Control need for this aria is what make's it very difficult, to have a performance that has such a consistent sound and amount of overtones is a wonderful thing to hear.
I kinda wish guys who sing this aria would be a little bit more gentle...it's a goodbye song, after all...each singer belts like he's singing at the Superbowl. It should be tender, grieving, sacrificial. The bitterest irony theatrically is that by the time Colline returns with the money, Mimi has already died...that said, this is the best rendition I have found so far.
I'm a professional musician.... but what does the size of the voice matter? The aria neds to be sung sadly... he's saying goodbye to his beloved old coat... powerful enough to be heard throughout the auditorium, of course, but with a character that is lacking here....
@PTCello key word is musician... not singer... this song is in the heat of his first cover and passigio which are the loudest parts of his voice... and if your voice is large it is very difficult to sing softly on the voice... but im not going to give a vocal lecture...
Why sadly. He is selling his coat top do something good. His is philosophical, not a depressed madman. This is a great singer, singing beautifully in a very large space.
Great! I was just about to post this performance myself, but I did a search to see if someone else had already done so. You beat me by 2 days! I may still post it, though, with English subtitles. It was an absolutely great performance! Tenors get all the glory, but it's nice to hear a really memorable aria for bass.
I'll just add... do a You Tube search for "Robert Briggs sings in a Luciano Pavarotti Masterclass" and you get to hear Pavarotti sing this! Plishka does it better, but still...it's Pavarotti!
