well, there is a switch that tells you whether its on or and off. and if it's on when you insert or remove the battery, you risk damaging the unit. so, don't be an idiot.
It can be a good idea to point the camera down when fitting a lens. Dust on the sensor is problem that is a hassle to sort out. let gravity be your friend.
