Its funny you mention tensioners. I talked to my old teacher over the weekend and he suggested the same thing. But that same night we discovered it had a cracked intake cam cap on the drivers side. We're going to replace it first then I'm going to suggest the tensioner to him again. As it stands right now he has the intake off and is cleaning and doing touch up paint on the engine. Any ideas of how to thoroughly remove fire extinguisher powder? And again, thanks for all your recommendations!
It is definetly the timing chain tensioners. Very very very common issue on that engine. It's typically not a major issue. You can try a different oil and some of the additives that are designed to clean out deposits and that may clear it up. The tensioner is hydraulic and over time it gets stiff and doesn't tension properly. Worse case scenario the tensioner fails completely and you'll simply need to replace it.
Taking a wild guess here did you check the chain tensioners and guides? or have them replaced? sounds like what my mark did on cold startups then when oil got to it it went anyway, but thats not happening here. i heard that the tensioners and guides like to get sloppy and make noise. Sounds louder as you get closer to the front cover..idk if its to big of an issue to where its going to be a costly repair or not but if you have the time and tools just tear it apart and look over it. good luck
