"And his mother felt a crack in her heart like a tiny pencil line. And each day after, the pencil line got thicker and thicker, and one day not long after, her heart split in half, and she died."
Always well up at that point... so very very sad... makes you realise just how bland so much of what we have to watch now is.
This just popped into my mind as I was thinking of something nostalgic to watch. A truly brilliant series. The children's shows back in the day weren't afraid to present darker stories than the nonsensical content today. Thank you very much for posting.
@mitsuevo8mr That's cool. I watched this show as a child, growing up in Israel. I VERY rarely think about this show. I wonder how many kids in other countries were raised on this show and many like it, and how often they think of these shows when they reach their 20s or 30s.
Was watching this on Netflix last night and as soon as it got to the "promise me whatever greets you when you return home" I was like "HOSHI- IT'S JEPTHAH! LULZ!" - Judges Chapter 11 verses 29-40. Dude promises God if he is given victory over the Ammonites, he'll make God a burnt offering of the first thing to greet him when he gets home, which ends up being his daughter.
This one (I don't know why) is my fave story from the series. I have no idea why. I just love it. I just wish they didn't cancle it. even though i know why. The greek one was too dark and the story teller was not as inviting. they needed to stick with the same story teller and change a bit of the atmsphere of the stories. but i love it so much. i miss it. glad Netflix has it.
@mspudds22 Prehaps because he had spent so many years along and adrift before finding a fortress of security that brought him protecting but no comfort. In trying to find a place where he could neither hurt nor be hurt, he cut himself off from human contact and grew to feeling more like a wild beast.
@collgoff I believe this story was a pilot episode for the series, so Brian Henson must have decided to do a different voice for the remaining episodes when they got made. Doing such a gravelly voice for so long can be difficult.

This is so beautiful! The acting is wonderful, from all the actors. And it goes without saying John Hurt as well.
