  • they were once 16 and their minds and ideas may have changed since then. now its a fire inside, live with that.

  • you're misunderstanding the FAQ. It says that AFI (WITH ITS CURRENT LINEUP) has always stood for A Fire Inside. Nowhere does it say that before Hunter and Jade joined the band it didn't stand for Asking For It.

  • You are the one who completely misread the FAQ. Nowhere doe sit say "with its current lineup". Read the video description before you come here and play the smart guy.

    kthxbye

  • i knew it

  • hey, st.pete!

    im from around there

  • davey jade adam ad hunter's afi has always been a fire inside. that does not say that before the current line up it wasn't different.

and for the record it was anthems for insubordinates then asking for it.

  • Just for the record, Davey has said AFI NEVER stood for Asking For It.

  • and it never did. he just said that their FRIEND came up with the asking for it, it was never official. kinda like an inside joke or something, but never official ;). same thing with HIM and his infernal majesty, just inside stuff :)

  • afi stood for many things over the years. first, anthems for insubordinates, then asking for it, and finally... what you have today.

(a bunch of fuckin idiots was never what afi stood for, contrary to what many say. ask any east bay hardcore fan who's true. they'll tell you.)

  • Davey doesn't really like his past. I've read in interviews he doesn't like being called punk, and he hates talking about how "he sang about cereal" He always tries to avoid talking about it.

  • @WaitingXEndlessly That's because he's a sellout.

  • @HoosierMF he's not a fucking sell out. did you expect him to sing about cereal wars and being a high school football hero for 20 fucking years?

  • @rlmofreg This is the kind of answer that a new AFI fan gives. I would like to invite you to listen to more old songs, since apparently you've listened to only two. There are some older songs like The Mother in Me, Aspirin Free, Don't Make Me Ill that, if you read beyond the words, you'll find more meaning than in new shitty but "poetic" songs like Love Like Winter.

  • @TheSecretNinja337 no i know where you're coming from and i love old afi, i have there entire discography and love all of it and have heard more than 2 fucking songs. i just think people should quit with the constant bitching about how they changed. they made a progression and whether they lost it or not with decemberunderground there is no right answer because you like what you like. and for the record dont make me ill is one of my favorite afi songs, just sayin :)

  • @TheSecretNinja337 Thank you. I couldn't have said it better.

  • @TheSecretNinja337

    not really

i mean all the old songs are about punk conformatity, and life sucking

a lot of the newer songs even on DU are very deep and poetic

ex: summer shudder, the interview, and yes love like winter

and lets not get started on sing the sorrow

btw you're a link on wikipedia and thats rad

  • @canesrule96 "Deep and poetic" doesn't make it better or more "mature". Life is hard and that's what hardcore is about. It doesn't get any more real than everyday life. If you think that's somehow immature then I pity you.

  • @HoosierMF

yeah i get what you're saying "life's tough dont be a bitch"

i get it, so spare me your sympathy

but dont tell me youve never needed emotional relief or even stimulation

that goes beyond "suck it up"

if you ask me, expressing emotions through deeper forms of expression like poetry, (esp. if you cant put a name or face on the thing thats making you feel that way,) is a way better catharsis , and it definetly gives davey more credibility as a lyricist

  • @canesrule96 I was merely pointing out the fact that just because punk and hardcore are simple, doesn't mean it's immature.

  • @HoosierMF

    oh, I agree

but then I question why you pointed out anything to me because I never did say that

  • and if u need written proof...even tho this vid is proof enough. In Very Proud of Ya were it says the mailing address on the sheet with the lyrics it says "write to afi: Asking For It.. P.o box...etc

  • Holy Shit.

Thats totally fucking them. I can't believe it.

I feel slightly betreyed, in a weird, unexplainable way.

  • Ok, it may have once stood for Asking For It, I totally believe that, 'cause that's definitely Davey and Adam.

AFI defintely used to stand for Anthems For Insubordinates, though. If you don't believe me, look on the back of Answer That and Stay Fashionable, bottom right corner. I guess they might have changed it at one point, then another, but I like Anthems For Insubordinates way better, it sounds awesome. Asking For It is okay, but still.

  • Hard to believe AFI has been around for almost 20 years!

...At least in a couple years. Granted, not with the present lineup, but still. Damn.

  • AFI became A Fire Inside right before Jade joined. After Shut Your Mouth And Open Your Eyes was released, there was an EP called A Fire Inside EP. Directly after, Mark left and Jade joined. Davey, Adam, Hunter and Jade's band actually has always been called A Fire Inside.

  • What's Davey, Adam, Hunter and Jade's band? AFI.

Has AFI always stood for A Fire Inside? No.

Ixnay was forced to answer the question, actually, not answer it properly, if he wanted his FAQ in the OMB. He told me Gavin asked him to make changes to it.

  • well to me the best era of AFI was black sails all hollows art of drownign and afi ep..a name doenst matter..i love every every afi cd. otherthen du, which i only like a little

  • anthems for insubordinates was put on a flyer back in the day as a joke, 1993 i believe. the "original name is asking for it"

  • weither or not it did or didnt always stand for a fire inside or a fucking idiot or asking for it or or whatever else it was. now its a fire inside.

    dude.. who cares man?!

maybe they're lying.. but can we MAKE THEM admit it? no. so just let it go.

  • 1998.. hm didnt something else come out that year?

    like A FIRE INSIDE ep..?

  • in 1998 they changed their name to a fire inside when jade came in so that's why they called the ep a fire inside ep and the name of their retrospective compilation is afi because it has songs from the 3 "afi sessions" (anthems for insubordinates, asking for it and a fire inside)

  • Jade doesn't play on the afi ep

  • That's not true at all. it says A Fire Inside on "Shut Your Mouth". It's in side the case. They must have changed it sometime in 97.

  • maybe...

  • Actually the quote about "Davey, Adam, Hunter and Jade's band has always been called "A Fire Inside." is TRUE. why? because before Jade came in it was called Asking For It. when Jade entered the group... the band was A Fire Inside.

    Hope this made sense...

  • You are correct. The error is that the answer completely evades the original question.

But see it this way. Jade, Davey, Adam and Hunter's band is AFI. Has AFI always stood for A Fire Inside? No.

  • Not so much because the A Fire Inside EP consisted of Davey, Adam, Hunter and Mark.

Therefore, the name change existed prior to Jade joining.

  • in the answer that era i believe it also stood for Anthems for insubordinates

  • I never knew that
