Name one fighter in the MMA who uses soley BJJ, soley kickboxing or soley wrestling. It's mixed martial arts. Frankly many of you don't know anything about karate so you cannot appreciate how much of it is actually being used.
@scarred10 In part you are right. However you are mostly wrong...a lot of the moves in wrestling BJJ and thai boxing are not utilized in MMA. Same with Karate....some moves are usefully..some are not..kata is definitely useless...Frankly the untrained person doesn't understand what iron body training is nor do they understand the footwork strategy. It the same as some people saying MMA is a barbaric street fight...they don't appreciate the technical stuff that happens behind the techniques.
@PortMourant2008 a massive amount of wrestling and bjj can and has been used in mma exactly as it is(provided of course you dont just train sport bjj)
Just so everyone knows, Alex also holds a brown belt in BJJ and is UNDEFEATED in MMA competition all by submission - his stats can be seen on MMA Underground
I've Known/trained with him since 2000, if you DO get him to the ground, he'd be in his element
@Hotora86 I bet your that chubby kid in karate kid breaking balsa board with your tangerine belt barely able to wrap around your fat body.... take the belt off fatass its stopping circulation to your fat head
@Hotora86 Look... one guy machida does something amazing with karate, then every karate guy jumps out of the woods on the band wagon like they got a chance. I think its funny. I think karate is very very very choreographed even the training above with these half assed takedown attempts, even if it is just "training", but i wrestled D1 and im looking at this particular video and im wondering where is the intensity? the reality?
@ridgidtoolman Good for you man, but why not give them a chance? Personally I like to see many different martial arts used in MMA, not only BJJ/MT/wrestling. I've trained in a MMA gym after learning Shotokan / Kyokushin Karate, Judo, Aikido and BJJ and my experience in each of those arts helped me during MMA fights. In fact, my knowledge of some specific areas was greater than that of other MMA students so I could sometimes surprise them in training. One shouldn't discard any martial art IMHO.
Lyoto Machida is not the first karate guy to become a cage fighting champ. Some of the guys I'm about to name got started in karate and you don't see ALOT of karate in the way they fight. Other guys fight with mostly karate stand up. Everyone I name was a cage fighting champion: GSP, Lyoto Machida, Semmy Schlit, Chuck Lidell, Bas Rutten, Vitor Belford, Shonie Carter, Guy Mezger. So I think its safe to say you have NO IDEA what you are talking about.
Good for them. I never said guys shouldnt or didnt start out on karate. Semmy, liddell, rutten, vitor (for sure), shonie (a jackass), guy mezger, all these guys dont really use theyre karate. One of these guys throws a kick or punch and every karate nerd says "see karate is awesome".... most these guys dont use karate... i havent seen any of these guys using horse stance, square blocking, or triple roundhouses. More thai kicks, boxing punches, wrestling control, BJJ subs. shutup
They all use Karate. They dont use horse stances or some of the useless blocking methods that karate employs. All ur points are meaningless. I never claimed they didnt use moves from other arts, YOU said " Look... one guy machida does something amazing with karate, then every karate guy jumps out of the woods on the band wagon." karate guys have been in mma for years. Your follow up point karate thing does not change that u were wrong. PS go watch k-1 and shut the fuck up.
@chodykumbra No all your points are useless, like your brain you dumb fuck.
And its true, one guy machida does something amazing with karate, and all you fags come out the wood works, its true you dont deny or you havent. Nobody jumped up and down when semmy schilt came into the scene in the name of karate cause he didnt achieve nothing compared to machida. So my original statement stands firm.
PS-why u talking about k-1, were talking mma you stupid fuck, stick with the context, karate nerd.
I should clear up a couple things because you are making alot of assumptions. First off im not a karate guy i practice muay thai. you were wrong so get over it. Yes all those guys i prevously mentioned that fight in MMA matches use MMA. Are you trying to make some ground breaking point with that??? Yes machida shot a double leg is that supposed to change the argument?? Im sorry i insulted you. Im annoyed that everyone has a holyier then thou attitude towards karate fighters
@chodykumbra whether or not you train karate doesnt change the fact that people stand in defense of it, like you do. But even you are smart enough not to train in it, but some reason defend it. I wouldnt say groundbreaking point, but i think it is a point that karate guys in the name of karate not really using karate win, then retards credit there wins to karate. You never insulted me, not even close. I dont think im holyier, just a better trained than karate gurus.
Fair enough. But, just because someone isnt in a horse stance or isnt using karate blocks doesnt mean that what they are doing isnt karate. Alot of karate folks dont only use horse stances. Alot f k-1 fighters for example use karate kicks and muay thai kicks. Because both are useful at times. Kettlebell instructors use breathing methods from hard karate. The reason is it works. Use whats useful discard whats not. But don't insult an art because its only partially functional.
The thing is that they use SOME karate. As you probably know some wrestling moves are not useful for mma or even street fighting. But wrestlers in mma dont use those moves. There is a double standard for karate guys.
@chodykumbra Look. Just cause theres corn in my shit doenst mean im gonna eat it... its still shit. Karate may have some useful things like breathing, a few kicks, punches.... but as a whole is pretty ridiculous. I mean, theres no other art that is that choreographed in there training, that low intensity and just plain inexperienced when it comes to a real fight. I never said they didnt have some stuff useful, im sure theres corn in their shit.... id rather not waste my time on corn, i eat steak
@ridgidtoolman Sometimes when i eat steak i eat it with patatoes and gravy. I enjoy good beer with it as well. Other times i eat steak mexican style with CORN tortillas, salsa and guacamole. Muay thai and wrestling are shrimp and steak.
Karate is corn tortillas.
I really dont care about this conversation anymore. Im glad you dont eat your own shit though..
Weve been thru this already dumbass. One guy... one guy in the HISTORY of karate does something good against real fighters and all of a sudden karate is the hottest best thing.... karate overall is shit.
Besides machida isnt just a karate guy, you cannot contribute all his wins to just karate. Did i mention your a dumbass already?
@ridgidtoolman how many times have you seen machida using jui juitsu? how many times have you seen him get taken down and controlled(certaintly not more than 3 times but maby less) how many takedowns has he initated using a jui juitsu technique over a karate one?in 90 procents of his fights h´s mainly used karate mixed with sumo, thats the ones he has used with great results.
btw he knocked randy the fuck out with a karate kid move!
The reason i mention k-1 and MMA together is that karate (although not as useful as muay thai in my opinion) is effective. k-1 has the best strikers in the world and karate guys are champions there as well. Im just tired of people insulting arts because they arent muay thai, wrestling or ju jitsu.
You do make a valid point. alot of what those guys use isnt karate. But, alot of what Vitor belfort uses is boxing, does that mean hes not a ju jitsu man?

You do make a valid point. alot of what those guys use isnt karate. Alot of what Vitor belfort uses isnt ju jitsu. does that mean hes not a ju jitsu guy cause he has boxing skills?
@chodykumbra the karatekas in k1 have been kickboxing for yrs before they got good, semmy, andy ,greco ,feitosa all crossstrained extensively and some dont even do karate any more for their preparation, they are now kickboxers.Belfort was never a good grappler but a very good fighter due to his athletic ability, boxing and basic bjj.The effectiveness of bjj has been proven countless times, karate in part only by 1 man.
Karate has its uses. GSP uses a spinning rear kick that he got from karate very effectively. Go tell him karate has only been proven by one man. Bas Ruttens DVD's have some karate moves as well. It was a proven art hundreds of years before UFC. just because it isnt prevelent in a modern sport doesnt mean it hasnt worked effectively for hundreds of years.
@chodykumbra a spinning back kick is found in many styles, tkd most notably,it doesnt mean tkd is effective ,its a single tech and a high risk, low percentage move but can be landed .GSP uses virtually all thai and boxing for his striking,he might pull out a spin kick for surprise but that doesnt mean he uses karate, machida definitely does use karate in mma and very well but he doesnt train like a karateka,he trains like an mma fighter.
@scarred10 I don't know if GSP trains karate anymore. If you know anything about Kyokushin it is all about iron body training...training to absorb blows...who is to say that GSP isn't using Kyokushin Karate when he receives blows about his body. The fact that GSP invited Machida to train with him means he still has interest in karate and not just boxing and kicboxing
@PortMourant2008 you dont use any style to absorb blows, any full conatct training will condition you to that mentally and physically. He respects karate because of tradition ,he doesnt train it and he doesnt use it,machida does.
@scarred10 Oh, better yet. Check out his bio on this offical website he lists karate as one of his styles.Apparenlty links are not allowed on youtube comments.
@PortMourant2008 i trained itf tkd for 17 yrs,Ive only fought amateur mma and thai since then,i used virtually no tkd in either but on my background info it states 3rd dan tkd.Same for gsp,he doesnt use it.
@scarred10 Oh, I guess you are not good at TKD then. I don't have a high opinion of tkd myself..but not all school are Mac dojos. It has become fashionable to take a stab at the more traditional arts. With regards to BJJ and wrestling a massive amount of it can be seen with the exception of the very advanced techniques, upper body throws, BJJ guard. The Muay Thai clinch is also not used. to be cont'd
@PortMourant2008 i was on the irish national team several times and won a lot of domestic tournaments in every part of itf tkd,it definitely was no macdojo.Ive used and seen lot of throws from the clinch in mma both amature and pro standard, same for thai clinch(tends to be fleeting though). The guard is used in almost every match ive taken part in or seen also,i dont know what mma your practising or watching. If you dont train ,you cant even talk, your opinion is baseless.
@scarred10 You are saying several things..not sure which one to hone in one. I do train MMA. While we use the BJJ gaurd on the mat...being there and using those tatics when strikes are invovles is risky. We never use Muay Thai clinching...we've replaced it with the Greco-Roman clinch. Same arguments goes for you..if you don't train karate your opinion is baseless.
@PortMourant2008 if you have to be on bottom ,guard is the place to be,the goal may to stand back up and guard allows you to do that,it will always be part of real fights. Some do use thai clinch effectively, its the best way to deliver knee strikes, ive used greco alot but mostly to hold and hit or takedown.
@scarred10 With regard to sport karate its the same as Judo. In Judo there are techniques which are just not used in competition. The ones that are used in competition are few and simple. Karate is much more than using a technique which looks karatelike...it's the distance, timing and rythm and mental awareness of space and body position that makes the techniques work. By the way did you know the GSP's style of karate resembles Muay Thai? Look it the history of the art.
@PortMourant2008 i know exactly what kyukushin is and how it develeped, when they spar its kickboxing, not karate, look at kyokushin lads in k1,they are kickboxing, not doing karate.A more effective form of karate is kudo which is really mma,not karate at all.The more realistic types of karate are nothing like karate at all, that should tell you something.
Are reading anything im writing?? No one said GSP is 100% karate.
Why on earth would any proffessional fighter train like a karateka for mma or kickboxing?? Obviously they would just have some karate influence. No one is proposing that GSP should practice eye gouging techniques and staff katas for his upcoming UFC fight. Of course the vast majority of karate isnt meant for mma! Im saying they have a karate influence. SOME karate works sometimes!
The list i posted of MMA and k-1 guys who use karate remains. The reason k-1 fighters train kickboxing instead of pure karate is because they arent training for karate tournament of fuadal combat. They are training to be good at a specific sport. So of course they train in sport specific drills! I wouldnt expect to see andy hug practicing a nun chuck kata for t k-1. But axe kick on the other hand? of course. Many kickboxing styles are influenced by karate. think about it.
@chodykumbra One guy machida, actually uses point fighting techniques in karate and it works, and like i said before, hes the one guy so far to really use karate in ONE aspect.... one very small aspect.... the takedown he threw on tito, was that karate too? looked like an up and over in greco to me. What about the doubles he hit? gonna credit that to karate to? karate was a base for some, but like all bases, it got them athletic got them moving.
@Hotora86 you never will because its not an effective combat style outside of the hybrid styles like kudo and kyokushin offshoots. Some unique karatekas who crosstrain in kickboxing and grappling could do it,nut would they be using karate.Machida is 1 man in 18 yrs of mma
His coach needs to shoot a bit faster and telegraph his takedowns less. He was making it too easy to sprawl imo. Just a little bit of training with pads so it's not a big deal, though.
Alexxxxxxx, Sup ma brother, This is MR.K. You and Mathew ARE my best friends + Mathew is the best sensei ever..Alex Please E-Mail me your school address.. i like to drop by. and see you guys..e-mail me later.. good bye
real nice. train hard. your partner is just as important to your training as you are. nice sprawl too. i didn't see any knee or elbow strikes in this vid. i'm sure it's out there some where.
lol at first i thought the video was saying 'world karate champ VS MMA coach'... i was like this is gunna be a short fight hahaha
but then i saw the guy in red trunks wasn't completing his shoots, and wasn't very thorough in his takedowns.
so yeah, this kickartist kid was just training.
he'd better train a fuckload better than that if his opponent has a real shoot with a good drive. that kid's contacts woulda come out if he fought a shootfighter worth a shit haha
oh my god you know i was just gonna say this was the cheezyiest thing i ever saw butt then i red this coment and without a doupt you are the biggest wanker on youtube ive ever met you cheezy little gay wanker who gives a fuck what your spotty little 13 year old wank fantasy is your a little puny teengae fantasist its obvious from the way you talk now fuck off you stupid little childish cheezy wanker
looks like a good training drill, all i would say is break the rhythm a little bit so do the drill then move for a while, do it again. its instead of just repating it non stop :)
am i the only one to realize this was only training and there is no winner and nobody got their ass kicked....one guy had gloves + one guy with punching mitts = training
what's the name of the song ? i know it's eminem but the name of the song plz :D

No one is proposing that GSP should practice eye gouging techniques and staff katas for his upcoming UFC fight. Of course the vast majority of karate isnt meant for mma! Im saying they have a karate influence. SOME karate works sometimes!
I really dont care anymore.

@billysue2 At least we do have Lyoto Machida. Look up Katsunori Kikuno as well.

His coach needs to shoot a bit faster and telegraph his takedowns less. He was making it too easy to sprawl imo. Just a little bit of training with pads so it's not a big deal, though.

real nice. train hard. your partner is just as important to your training as you are. nice sprawl too. i didn't see any knee or elbow strikes in this vid. i'm sure it's out there some where.

lol at first i thought the video was saying 'world karate champ VS MMA coach'... i was like this is gunna be a short fight hahaha
but then i saw the guy in red trunks wasn't completing his shoots, and wasn't very thorough in his takedowns.
so yeah, this kickartist kid was just training.
he'd better train a fuckload better than that if his opponent has a real shoot with a good drive. that kid's contacts woulda come out if he fought a shootfighter worth a shit haha

looks like a good training drill, all i would say is break the rhythm a little bit so do the drill then move for a while, do it again. its instead of just repating it non stop :)
