I think it should really go without saying that which individual player or band is 'better' depends on what one likes to hear . These arguments are the epitome of pointless converstaion. Who was the bettr painter ? ..Michelangelo or Picasso? It depends on what you like to look at . I am sure there was competition between the huge bands from England to some fegree , but that's not what it was all about . Art itself is not competition.
except for the fact that each individual in zeppelin comparable is better at their respected instrument. Both top shelf but there is a reason zeppelin is one of the highest selling artists of all time, all the while being one of the most bootlegged bands during their reign. Led Zeppelin just hits harder than any Who song and I love hard hitting music. System of a Down hits hard for modern rock but nowhere near the talent as Zeppelin...especially considering the previous influences for 60's bands
entwistle was a better bass player then jones and keith moon could probably hold his own against bonham (it's a tossup argument). Page was a better guitarist technically...though Townshend is one of the greatest minimalist players. Vocally, Plant and Daltrey were extremely similar...though Plant's voice deteriorated in their later albums. From a songwriting standpoint, Zeppelin had more memorable riffs probably...but Townshend was a far superior lyricist and producer.
@deadhardy Entwistle could be a better bassist than Jones, but Paul was so versatile. John could play the mandolin, 6/12 string, slide guitar, organ/keyboard, among others i'm sure. Yeah Townsend was a great writer no doubt and great at the guitar because he was so creative. Clapton is probably better one on one, but Page gets my vote over all because of his technique. But you can't forget how creative he was and how much he pushed the boundary. LZ also probably sold more than both combined.
ya i love led zeppelin as well...both page and townshend were creative geniuses in their own ways...and both bands had top notch musicians in terms of rock bands at the time.
@GDuBMuSiCk point? Led Zeppelin and The Who are the two greatest rock bands to ever grace the world with music, also back by the two greatest men to ever sit behind the drumset, yes, Led Zeppelin is my favorite band as well, but lets not compare, and just embrace the fact that these are the two greatest bands to ever exist.
@GDuBMuSiCk thats argueable, you cant say bonham and moon can be compared, thats a tossup, two totally different styles man. Moon didn't need technicality, the who's music was too agressive, most of bonham's influence came from moonie, early on, could moon play with the groove and swing that bonham had? No...but we cant say he wasn't technically as good, we havent heard him play like that, and in his defense, bonham could not play the way moon could, he just couldnt..and for bass..
@jaqua524 entwisle is a better bass player, you are being biased to think jones is a better bass player, hes not, thats the easiest of the arguement, guitarists, page is the greatest ever besides hendrix, vocals, different, plant had a larger range, and a more..godly voice, I disagree with your statement, entwisle is a better bassist, and moon possibly is a better drummer, and he possibly is not, either way, LZ is the greatest rock band ever, followed by the who
@Conneisseur2 I believe, from what I've read (& seen) they were friends. In 'Hammer Of The Gods' there's a story about them together in LA, in a sports car (on the back of a truck) revving the engine, cause neither had a license.
It's not that strange these ole geezers meet each other, as Jimmy Page had worked along with producer Shel Talmy, which The Who recorded with early. Also, Moon, Entwistle, Jeff Beck and Page have this amazing tune called "Beck's Bolero" penned down (look for it in the CD 'Truth', by The Jeff Beck Grup)
@cyburied ....as a session musician in the mid 60s Page actually played and recorded the guitar parts for the Whos "Cant Explain" and the Rolling Stones "Satisfaction"
The fact that I think Zeppelin remains rock's greatest band does not change the fact that The Who were fantastic. It's dumb to slam The Who because they were great. Zeppelin in their prime were absolutely untouchable. I've seen both and love them both. All the hardcore Zep fans that I know also love The Who. Most rock music fans never either/or any of the truly great bands.
whoever you are keith moon actually named 'led zeppelin' when he planned a band with page and jones wouod have been awesome anyway but planty and bonham made it what it was
That's not entirely right, it was Page and Jonesy who wanted to make the band, and Keith said it would go down like a Lead Zeppelin. Then they just changed it around when they got Bonzo and Percy so American kids wouldn't pronounce it "Leed"
ohh yeah?? well the guitarist Jimmy Page eats guitarists like Pete Townshend for breakfast. Bottom line, Led Zeppelin can kick The Who's behind any day
Hes right ya know, Led Zeppelin were at Woodstock, they rose the sun upon the field. Led Zeppelin are considered the best live band in the history of the world. LZ are mic swinging, guitar destorying drum kit smashing, beast bass playing gods......or wait, THATS THE WHO. And I was wondering why all the LZ fans on here were soo happy, its not b/c LZ was/is the best, its because in this video LZ was gifted to be in the presence of THE WHO.
The Zepp were offered Woodstock, but they regretably turned it down. And does not destroying their instruments make them a bad band? Look, The Who and Led Zeppelin are both better in different ways, but it's the unstoppable force against the immovable object. Keep personal preferance apart from 'my favourite band is better than yours', stop trying to find the better band, or just bollocks off.
Music isn't a competitive sport. There is no objective way of proving who is "better", except because some subject says so. And there is no place for competition anyhow. You can enjoy both bands, they ARE legends. And Keith and Bonzo, well, how could I even dare rate them.
They both look and sound a couple fools these days ,I think. Neither one can pull off the vocal acrobatics needed to do justice to their songs any longer. besides ,half of the real Who is dead, and so is John Bonham.
Pff rubbish, i reckon theyre both as legendary as each other, both got incredibly talented musicians on every instrument (ie keith moon - john bonham) creating spectacular musical masterpieces and influencing many generations of music
The track playing is Black Mountain Side from Led Zeppelins' first album.
Bonham & Moon were good friends throughout the 70's. He and some of Zep's tour personel were at Moony's funeral.
Zep and the Who listened to each other and respected each other. I've never heard Pete dissing Zeppelin in anyway. He does always say The Who were the best thing and will say other groups were not as good, he does have a wicked sense of humor and shouldn't be taken too seriously when he talks of other groups.
this is the story - Moon and Entwhistle wanted to leave the Who. They were friends with PAge. Page suggested starting a band with the three of them and finding a singer. Moon said that band "would go down like a Lead balloon." Moon was not referring to the lineup that eventually became Led Zeppelin. Moon's comment was more self-deprecating than anything else.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
yeah led zepp really owns the who,but i like'em too, plant was to supposed to be the who's vocalist, but he was not approved in the band's test in 1965,so a guy who sings REALLY likely plant, entered in his place, glad by that cos plant went to zeppelin

mythbuster you are kind of an idiot. Zep doesnt 'own' The Who - they are both awesome. And Plant was never supposed to be the vocalist of the Who. Moon and Entwhistle were supposed to be the rythm section of Zep, with Steve Marriot as vocalist. Regardless, it never happened, Zep got a great frontman, The Who stayed intact, and Steve Marriott is forgotten or unknown by tossers like you who say things like "Zep really owns the Who".
mythbuster, you really are kind of an idiot. Entwhistle and moon were actually supposed to form the rythm section of Zep, and Steve Marriot was supposed to be their front man. Dude, learn some rock history. Plant? No offense, but he was unknown, last-minute third-choice singer... Page needed to find a vocalist in a hurry, and all the good ones have been taken... would have been still paving roads were it not for Terry Reid who told Page about him.
they're both equally brilliant. I luv both of their singing styles. Why doesn't evryone stop this competition shit between bands, guitarists, drummers and singers? It's all fuck'n great! Would you rather it was like the 80's again where every band sounded the same? And shitty at that? back then it was a contest to see who could be more ridiculous than the next overplaying asshole. Zep and the Who are two totally different bands and we're all the more enlightened because of it.
Bonham and Moon in the same room...I don't know whether to piss myself or internally combust. That would have been an awesome jam if the bands had played together.
it's "white summer/black mountain side". Even though this is Jimmy's version, the original song was by Bert Jansch called "Blackwaterslide". Check it out, it's good stuff.
It's a bootleg tape called "For Badgeholders Only" from L.A. 1977. He supposedly plays part of the Moby Dick solo at the concert. the Moby Dick solo I haven't found on youtube, But there is footage of the exact concert on youtube, he plays tamborine on "Rock and Roll" lol. I have to get a hold of that bootleg though,
Actually, Jonesy hung up by himself most of the time and that sometimes made the band (especially Peter Grant (search, i wont explain who he is)) get angry cuz he travel apart and they would know whether he whould reach on time but he always did...he was a pro^^
Daltrey and Plant are best friends. The Who is considered the best live band although Zep may have sold more albums. The Who made their money touring, Zep on album sales. touring is where the real money is made. Both are great bands.
Rodger was all like.......Hey "who the fuck are you?" and Pete was all like...."I think I'm intimadated, and Keith was all like.."Whatcha all drinkin'?"....

I think the Zeppelin/Who debate is so 7th grade....anyway, what I always thought was interesting was this:
Curly blonde lead singer with a penchant for showing off his chest
Skinny artistic genius guitar player/guru of the band
Quiet bass player who is in fact an all around amazing musician
Drunk, crazy but loveable heavy drummer (who died too soon)

personlay i think your a cock. Plant was the greatest singer the world has known and if you cant get that round your little head then your a retard

Daltrey is far better the Plant Easy
suraboyo 3 years ago
they're both equally brilliant.

This doesn't make sense... Townsend absolutely HATED Zeppelin. He outright SAID it in multiple interviews...
oggendoggen2 3 years ago
When did he say that? Jimmy Page was friends with everyone in the Who.

black mountain side, be zeppelin, found on their first album
kaiserkarlzoso 3 years ago
it's "white summer/black mountain side".

They just forgot his phone number.
BrianJLeong 3 years ago
Actually, Jonesy hung up by himself most of the time and that sometimes made the band (especially Peter Grant (search, i wont explain who he is)) get angry cuz he travel apart and they would know whether he whould reach on time but he always did...he was a pro^^

To think of all that epicness in one room... If a mere mortal stepped in there, he would be incinerated.
shikamaru412 3 years ago
Daltrey and Plant are best friends. The Who is considered the best live band although Zep may have sold more albums. The Who made their money touring, Zep on album sales. touring is where the real money is made. Both are great bands.
