I have been playing guitar forever and I wanted a hand drum to add flavor to my recordings....im a huge deadhead and a HUGE reggae freak and I love to watch and listen to drum circles so I bought a 8" schalloch alluminum darbuka and will come in mail...was this a good investment???
This is an excellent video. I will recommend it to all of our doumbek slappers. thanks for the well presented instruction, from our little Facebook group: Bangin' Away - Hand Drum Connection.
Hello David , could you please response and help me ,in the left hand tap , can i use my middle finger ? Because i feel that my middle finger is much stronger and it feels easier to hit with it .
@allstarswag Hopefully by now you've made a choice :-) but I'd say use what ever finger(s), (and even drum position!), works best for you. If you are getting the sounds you want and you aren't hurting your hands, then you are doing nothing wrong in my book!
it appears that the doum stroke allows for the fingers to bounce off the head while the pa stroke has the fingers stay on the head at the end of the stroke.
I would say... when you play a 'dum' stroke, your fingers are together but not cupped and you move 'towards the inside part of the drum'. When you play the 'pa' stroke, your fingers are cupped and you must think the drum is hot, your hand bounces back immediately or... it is just like slapping someone's face (sorry, I can't think of a better description). I hope it helps :-)
What a wonderful teacher! Thank you so much for making an instructional video that really works with how we learn. It almost feels like you're here with me teaching me in person! :)
yeah these videos are very helpful and all but is it common to feel pain in the palms because my palms are red. i realize i may be hitting too hard but if i dont i dont get the desired sound. can you understand my frustration?
I just got my first Darbuka because i dont really know how to play i choosed small one, idk if i did right but i think easier will be playing on small one and when ill learn ill play on bigger
I like it! Your instructional performance is Very explicative and clear. I have order your DVD on your Web page. I´m looking forward to have it and star to learn.
For those that don't know, David is a great player, a great teacher, and a very cool guy. If you have an opportunity to drum with him or take a lesson, it's well worth your time. I picked up the instructional DVD's from the website and they are high quality productions with slow-motion clips, great audio, and articulate direction with notation as well.
You rock!! Your instruction was very helpful. I'm learning different hand drum techniques so that I can get involved with facilitating drum circles for Senior Citizens.
first of all thank you for adding that video and sharing with us by that site but i m very upset about why these kind of videos we dont have :( anyway what i want to talk about is how can i find more please help... aysegul ben denedim oldu bu arada :)
Very, good training Video here I Jerry Gatlin really have learned some thing from it I am a Training Doumbek Drummer and Djembe Drummer at Venice Beach Drum Circle. 4-26-07.
What is the best material for a Darbuka? Should it be made out of metal (aluminium)? How much does an average quality darbuka cost? I'm about 6feet/183cm. Are there different sizes/which size should someone like me take? Thx
I think this guy can clearly play alot better than it shows here. This is an extremely good clip for a beginer. I must say though as a Turk my self I think that these other Turks that have posted disrespectful comments should be ashamed. They should be pleasured that a foreigner is playing our instrument but instead they are acting like idiots.. Grow up
The 'doum' is played just a little off center. He is playing it correctly. I should know I play and perform myself. This is a good clip for anyone begining to play tha Darbuka, thanks for posting.
This word (Pa[h]) may came from framedrum play techniques, where the slap stroke called this way, and played almost the same. See his framedrum instructions!
His darbuka sounds awesome...im a beginer what kind is that..im starting out on a schalloch 8" aluminum turkish style darbuka

Use your ring finger, it's kind of like flicking your wrist.
Maybe if I get my camera working I can post a tutorial or something. There seems to be a lot of people having trouble with that sort of thing.
