  • His darbuka sounds awesome...im a beginer what kind is that..im starting out on a schalloch 8" aluminum turkish style darbuka

  • I have been playing guitar forever and I wanted a hand drum to add flavor to my recordings....im a huge deadhead and a HUGE reggae freak and I love to watch and listen to drum circles so I bought a 8" schalloch alluminum darbuka and will come in mail...was this a good investment???

  • should I buy a 15 or 20 cm darbuka?

    or maybe get bongos?

  • Really good job. Now i got an idea how to play the instrument. THX

  • This is an excellent video. I will recommend it to all of our doumbek slappers. thanks for the well presented instruction, from our little Facebook group: Bangin' Away - Hand Drum Connection.

  • This guy is badass, that sounded kinda like a Regeaton beat too! LOL!

  • Great, man!

  • I love the slow motion sound. Super deep and low. That goes for all the insrtuctional vidoes you post.

  • really great tutorial

  • Hello David , could you please response and help me ,in the left hand tap , can i use my middle finger ? Because i feel that my middle finger is much stronger and it feels easier to hit with it .

  • @allstarswag Hopefully by now you've made a choice :-) but I'd say use what ever finger(s), (and even drum position!), works best for you. If you are getting the sounds you want and you aren't hurting your hands, then you are doing nothing wrong in my book!

  • Thank you so much!!

  • hheeeeeyy¡¡¡ que buen video... muchas gracias, a tocar se ha dicho ¡¡¡¡¡

  • I cant get the left hand tap ! can someone help ?

  • @Dorsch123

Same here. Have you figured it out yet? I hope.

  • @Gretsche87

Use your ring finger, it's kind of like flicking your wrist.

Maybe if I get my camera working I can post a tutorial or something. There seems to be a lot of people having trouble with that sort of thing.

  • wow you're awesome. i'm a beginner playing darbuka. your instruction video is very easy to understand

    i am getting this video!!!

you are the best teacher of the year!

  • I agree, great teacher! the time you take to explain helps a lot and the different speeds helps when trying to practice :)

  • Very good video, explained quite well

  • wow that rocks, when I get grip on this, I'd love to learn some finger strokes.. Lovely!

  • Finally someone can provide basics in a slow clear manner. Thank you!!!

  • Thankyou so much, Really helped a lot

  • I don't understand the difference between the Doum stroke and the Pa stroke. Could someone please explain.

Otherwise, the video is really great! Thank you so much! 5 *'s =D

  • mir11mir,

it appears that the doum stroke allows for the fingers to bounce off the head while the pa stroke has the fingers stay on the head at the end of the stroke.

  • I would say... when you play a 'dum' stroke, your fingers are together but not cupped and you move 'towards the inside part of the drum'. When you play the 'pa' stroke, your fingers are cupped and you must think the drum is hot, your hand bounces back immediately or... it is just like slapping someone's face (sorry, I can't think of a better description). I hope it helps :-)

  • You are a fantastic teacher and the slow motion is so helpful. Thank you for posting this, I am now going to watch any other videos you have!

  • For those that don't know, David is a great player, a great teacher, and a very cool guy. If you have an opportunity to drum with him or take a lesson, it's well worth your time. I picked up the instructional DVD's from the website and they are high quality productions with slow-motion clips, great audio, and articulate direction with notation as well.

    Highly recommended!

  • Its from an instructional DVD. You can find more info on my website, the link is in the video and in the top right box:

    framedrums de

  • that one is not turkish its egipcian, turkish darbuka its different

  • Thank you for playing this turkish instrument

  • Very, good training Video here I Jerry Gatlin really have learned some thing from it I am a Training Doumbek Drummer and Djembe Drummer at Venice Beach Drum Circle. 4-26-07.

  • What is the best material for a Darbuka? Should it be made out of metal (aluminium)? How much does an average quality darbuka cost? I'm about 6feet/183cm. Are there different sizes/which size should someone like me take? Thx

  • Thanks for the great introduction! I just bought a darbuka today and this video really helped.

  • bana öğretiyo olm ben kırklareliliyim lan bn doğuştan darbuka çalıyorum hem o bizim müzik aletimiz.

  • All I can say is thank you!

  • I think this guy can clearly play alot better than it shows here. This is an extremely good clip for a beginer. I must say though as a Turk my self I think that these other Turks that have posted disrespectful comments should be ashamed. They should be pleasured that a foreigner is playing our instrument but instead they are acting like idiots.. Grow up

  • turkish darbuka

  • ne dion sen lan...

  • Helped a lot...thanks!

  • :) gracias...

  • Wher3e can I get a drum like that?

I mean same model and maker.

  • the doum in the demo isn't in the middle of the drum, where it should be

  • The 'doum' is played just a little off center. He is playing it correctly. I should know I play and perform myself. This is a good clip for anyone begining to play tha Darbuka, thanks for posting.

  • haha you think that you're more than David? he is god,so shut up please, and don't bother.

  • Boom chacka lacka lacka

  • Dum tek teke tek dum teke tek teke... draka dum draka dum dum teke tek... Allah Allah...

  • This word (Pa[h]) may came from framedrum play techniques, where the slap stroke called this way, and played almost the same. See his framedrum instructions!

  • I've just discovered the Darbuka, it has an amazing sound.Thank you for posting this video.

  • He is good, and yes!! no such stroke called "Pa". In Egypt we call it "Ka". But he is a good instructor.

  • I need more of this, very usefull.
