people who let the music flow through them start to move involuntarily. it happens a lot more in dance where it actually makes sense to move.
it is absolute pleasure to be in that state because you could feel the vibrations and the depth of the sound on a sensory level reverberating in your body. It also improves reaction time, rhythm, your senses essentially and sort of lets what's been internalized through hard training to subconsciously naturally come out.
the body movement and facial expression is a clear indication of total focus. it's also hard to teach young kids to move with the music and when distorted faces show up , you usually hear better music !
Watch Horowitz play. His economy of motion and lack of extraneous gestures does not in any way detract from the perfection of his performance. Judges would do well to learn from that.
Interesting to hear how differently they handle very similar passages - I like the idea of doing it this way... it really brings out the distinctive character of each musician.

two absolutely fantastic musicians (especially bashmet in my taste/oppinion) however, people are right, there was no chemistry, still, a winning a performance, though, i would have died to have been there to watch it live!
Can't really say that if you are basing your statement off a youtube video. The sound sounds really distorted to my ears so you can't trust em all the time. :D
hay mucha quimica entre ellos ,eso me gusta , porque hace la musica mas interesente y el publico le gusta mucho la comunicacion entre los instrumentistas....

For ex at 1:45 the viola sounds like a clarinet - gorgious! Might be instruments from the conservatory ? They look different than what they usually play.
ugh...Vengerov is sooooooo flamboyant....i personally don't know how anyone can play well when they're flailing around like crazy. i got a lot of crap in college for not doing physical gestures while i played. even though my playing was beautiful, they wanted me to sway and make dramatic faces. i say that all that matters is how you sound!
I agree, completely, with you. I find that all those eccentric gesticulations very distracting from both the beauty of the music as well as the virtuosity of the performer. This is why I can enjoy Jacqueline Du Pre only on audio.
@vlnvlaclogbaerhpno I agree, that is all that matters: what I like about Vengerov is when I close my eyes, he still sounds brilliant. On Violin or Viola.
@vlnvlaclogbaerhpno All that matters IS how you sound! When I listen to Vengerov play, I don't hear his gestures, all I hear is a Master and his instrument. So, for me it doesn't detract from his playing. He could be turning somersaults, for all I care! He still sounds like a superb player...
You must have missed David Oistrakh playing viola, his original instrument. It is, however, pretty much impossible to find any of those old recordings.
WOW I want to hear that! The first piece I heard Oistrakh play was "Claire de Lune" and in it he showed a great ear for tone and expression. He's my favorite artist nowadays.
The only piece in which you might hear that was recorded 25 years after he had quit the viola for the violin. That is Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante for Strings (this piece) where his son Igor Oistrakh played the violin and David the viola. But he had long since ceased recording for the viola until he recorded that one piece with his son. It's not a fair piece on which to judge.
Yes, but I have many recordings from the 1910 to 1945 era. Needless to say, the recording quality of Rachmaninov playing his piano concertoes is quite poor but the musicality still comes through.
Please feel free to raid my "My Favorites" or my public playlist "David Oistrakh". I also recommend my public playlist "Sviatoslav Richter" which has playing solo and also in conjunction with Oistrakh. BTW Igor Oistrakh, David's son, IMHO isn't worth a listen.
BTW a simple search on David Oistrakh will turn up many videos. The last time that I looked there were videos of him playing the Brahms' violin concerto and doing a much better job than anyone else whom you may have heard. Of course Sviatoslav Richter, whose pianist skills were on a par with Oistrakh's violinist skills makes for a "MUST search". And to round it out, search for "Mstislav Rostropovich", the third member of the "Big Three". (cont.)
Sadly, there is not a video on YouTube of the three of them as soloists for the Beethoven Triple Concerto. The second recording on that CD is Oistrakh and Rostropovich doing Brahms' double concerto. If all of my CDs were to disappear, that would be the very first CD on my "to buy" list. (I have Rostropovich doing the six parts of the Dvorak Cello Concerto in "My Favorites".
well the violonist plays good, allthough he has a wrong holding, but this doesn´t change the result, but it changes that many violin teachers saying there is a certain violin holding...If you play good, nobody cares how you hold.but vengerow gives me the impression to be stiff by the lefthand.I hope im wrong
THIS BRING ME BACK TO THE BEST DAYS WHEN I WAS STUDING WHIT A VERY PROFESSIONAL AND A SOLOIST VIOLIST, IN MY BEGINING AS A VIOLIST, BUT NOW ALL IT'S A SHIT AND I HAVE NEW PROBLEMS PLAYING VIOLA THAT BEFORE I DIDN'T HAVE, thanks to the violinists that dare to teach viola, thinking that it is the same.

its good but vengerov and power have more chemistry and their performance is so much tighter

Sorry... it sounds hasty to me. The volins & the soloists do not blend. It lacks depth...or feeling.

Second movement much better performed then first one. I am sure they didn't have enough time for practice together.

Nobody ever claimed that Vengerov was the second coming of David Oistrakh. Give him a break.
