Ralph Nader was proven right. Had enough people listened to his message and disputed the 2000 election,we might have been able to save this country. as it stands now,we're in big trouble.
Seriously Maher is increasingly like Ariana Huffington. They eventually become too much a part of the game. At that point they are incapable of asking relevant questions.
Ron Paul is the first step to a third party, even though he is republican he is also Libertarian which will break the mold of voting either left or right
Bill and his guests....less Nader of course.....are fine examples of brainwashed America. Your vote is precious. It belongs to you...Only a brainwashed idiot would accuse you of wasting it on your conscience.
This is too funny coming from Maher who criticizes religious people for being mindless zombies. Paul/Nader for president and vice!!!!!!!
@pureaggression What difference does it make if Moore makes millions? That doesn't mean the capitalist system doesn't have flaws, and he has been rightfully pointing out those flaws.
I don't think Moore and Maher were being disrespectful to Nader. They just wanted to make him aware that his political campaign, however well-intentioned it may have been, was doing more harm than good by allowing Bush to get more votes.
@pureaggression Huh? First you bash Moore and Maher for not giving credit to capitalism for their financial success, and then you say we "don't have" capitalism? Which is it? Make up your mind. (And my teacher didn't "bash my head" with propaganda, I took a look around at my own country.)
@pureaggression Well, Moore accumulated his wealth the same way anyone in the film industry does -- by producing films and marketing them. You can find filmmakers in any country who do the same.
Every economy is mixed to some degree, but from my perspecitve, the American market is predominantly capitalist.
@pureaggression I figured you were one of those anti-tax people. Get some perspective, America has some of the lowest tax rates in the world and our taxes are the lowest they've been in years (yes, even under the "conservative" Reagan.) Sorry but if you're a full-blown capitalist you're not going to find it better anywhere else. I pay taxes like anyone else and I'm HAPPY to. I believe taxes are patriotic.
We DO spend too much on the military, though. You got one thing right.
@pureaggression The film industry- or any entertainment business- is different from others, in that their product isn't all that vital to people's lives. (If TV & movies went out of business, people can EASILY entertain themselves) And the real reason starting a business is difficult here, is because big business is very focused on crushing any possible competitors, unless they find them useful. America doesn't have a lack of capitalism. It has TOO MUCH capitalism!
When it comes to this 'lesser of two evils' BS, unemployment figures introduce a different historical perspective. If you go to the Bureau of Labor Statistics website, the unemployment rate, for my state of Washington, shot up 3 percentage points to 9 percent in 6 months, Oct '08-Apr '09. And it's stayed there ever since. Coincidence? Go figure.
Say what you want about Bush (believe me, I had plenty), but unemployment was NEVER that high during his entire reign.
i know this seems like a cop out. but i refuse to vote for anyone. until i get to personally meet this person and have an intelligent conversation with them and determine for myself if they deserve the office. not some political campaign where i get to see the best side of them hugging babies and shaking hands. means nothing to me. speak your mind to me, THEN go run for office. oh...and no paycheck for the job. or if you get paid you DONT get to vote for your own raises and retirement funds.
@bonheurbrun you don't vote for Ralph Nader because that gives Republicans a better chance to win. That's why Michael Moore and Bill have to beg Nader not to run so ppl don't have the third choice instead they vote for the lesser of two evils which in America are the Democrats.
I turned 18 in time to vote in the Kerry/Bush election...I voted Nader. I didn't know much, then, about ANYTHING. But now I knoiw I chose the right vote and that working toward a thrid party is a great incentive.
@SoberAllmanBrosFan I hear you man. I am Canadian and since I turned 18 I have voted in two elections for parties I knew weren't going to win. Even if we don't win, at the very least it's a way to have our voices heard and to show the bigger parties that they are missing a large chunk of votes and that by compromising with the independents they would get more seats.
The problem with Ralph Nader's Presidential Campaigns is that he generally runs as a Progressive Independent. If he ran for President of a Democratic Socialist Party with Party Infrastructure, then he would be taken more seriously.
@FRSFreeStateES no its that both parties are corporate run and ralph doesnt want to bend over to these corporate goons so the media also corporate run will drown out these guys by putting there poster child in the spotlight even if he ran as a democrat they still wouldnt give him his fair chance cause of his views

I don't think the posters here understand why Moore and Maher begged Nader to end his campaign. They weren't trying to "silence" him. They just didn't want to see a repeat of what happened in 2000.
As much as I admire Nader for the good he's done for this country, the simple fact is, he's NOT a politician. Period. He should stay out of politics and go back to doing what he does best -- exposing the truth behind corporations and providing consumers with inside information.
Sorry, but third parties are a joke. They may have good ideas, and they are more immune to corporate influence than the two main parties, but they have little understanding of how the presidency works. They are focused mainly on their favorite issues and fail to see the total picture of presidential responsibility.
Voting for a third party only siphons votes away from the more favored of the two main parties. So if you want your least favorite candidate to win, vote for a third party.
@jhillst Sorry but, the only reason the corporate corrupt chose Obama to win the elections was because he could get away with more controversial things than McCain. How would it look if a white guy suddenly started passing laws that alienated the lower class? Would it look worse if it was a black person that did it? Most likely not. There is no lesser evil, the Democrats and Republicans are both EQUALLY evil. Vote 3rd party to have your conscience clean, there is no good guy in the other 2
@vallecaucano114 While the Republicans and Democrats may both be corrupted in different ways, at least they are true politicians. A guy like Nader may have great ideas, but he's NOT a politician. Period. I like that guy a lot and think he's done many great things for this country, but I wish he'd stay the hell out of politics.
I think Maher and Moore have great ideas too, but that doesn't mean I'd want them to be President.
This makes me sick...Michael Moore and Bill Maher give me a break...as patriotic u claim to be, u both gettin on ur hands and knees is the most unpatriotic thing i've seen...people please get over yourselves, please get over the 2000 election and stop making excuses about why Gore lost, Gore lost Tennesse and Arkansas btw, start holding ur candidates accountable and quit acting as if anybody but a Republican is ok with you.
I have cmopletely lost respect for Maher and Moore. I know they are both hardcore Democrats at heart but now I know that neither truly has any credibility. Fuck those two.
These anti-Nader tools are either dishonest, or stupid. There is no real ideological difference between the republicans and democrats (as you can plainly see with Obama - absolutely nothing has changed). So trying to stifle independent candidates in favour of one of the two parties achieves literally nothing.
He should challenge Barack Obama for the Democratic candidacy. I feel like the only way he would ever get elected is if he were the candidate for one of the two parties. That's what Ron Paul does. Granted, Ron Paul has never been the Republican candidate, but he knows he'll never get elected as a third party. Sometimes you have to get inside the system to bring it down.
Putting aside for a moment the whole controversy about Nader helping Bush jr. win the election, Nader truly is a brilliant man.
America: If you want to take back your country from politicians who do nothing for the people (and I'm afraid to say that may include B.O.), you need to start putting your support behind people like Ralph Nader. Heck, you need to get Michael Moore to run for public office. Put America back into the hands of the people!
Great example of why we can't get third party candidates in office, people like Bill Maher are telling us not to vote for them. It's always, every four years, the case where we just HAVE to vote for a particular candidate...nothing ever changes, and it never will as long as alleged "liberals" continue telling us we need to continue voting for another ridiculous Democrat.
@Rwilsoncpt I am a Canadian, but if I was American, I don't know how I could NOT vote for Ralph Nader. He's the only one that has normal-guy priorities and is not bought by Wall Street.
@Rwilsoncpt Nadar, by taking the votes from the Democrat Al Gore in key states, denied Gore a victory over George W. Bush. Maher prefers that Democrats win over Republicans and the PM of Canada gives a good explanation why voting for a third party fails here in the US.
@sxcboy4u Because the special interests groups are already aware of his politics. If he does not win the democratic primary, which he wouldn't because the business interests would smear him out of the primary race, he would be barred from running as an independent. There is no where else for a corporate fighting candidate to run except for a third party. And in that lies a broken, commerce controlling political system.
2004 was stolen too. presidents are picked years before they win elections. voting for 3rd parties doesnt spoil anything. obama has been in for a year he is already worse than bush. more war, more torture, more corporate control, more bashing of the constitution
@A4T2M0 dumb for speaking truth? dumb for defending the constitution?dumb for opposing the 2 party corporate dictatorship? democrats have fucked us as much as the republicans your a dumb piece of shit for not seeing that.
@robaquarian -Exactly. Ralph Nader is a true American like Ron Paul. These other slime balls are garbage but the media gives them all the attentions.
AAAARRGHH i\I may be just an unrealistic idealist about this but why couldn't they just support Nader?? Instead of sticking to championing the annoying two-party system
Damn dude! Why did Moore look so pissed at Nader? I guess he's not really a Nader fan! lol Moore & Nader r both good dudes. They both have done good work in their own rights!
Nader won't run for either party, making his chances for getting his ideals beyond his office staff very small. It's great he knows how to fix government, but if he bullheadedly marginalizes his chances to actually change anything he's just an ineffectual "I told you so." Great.
If you notice, everyone is always wrong about Ralph Nader. He said the 2 parties are never good enough, that they won't serve the needs of the people over corporate interests. And they still buy into the 2 parties, like they aren't both funded by the same corporate dollars. Moore and Maher need to get their heads out of their asses, because clearly, in hindsight, Nader was right. But these idiots in the media marginalize the only person who tells the truth.
@wolverstreets well in fairness Michael Moore always criticises the democrats, saying that there is barely a difference between them and the Republicans, I do agree with Maher about the democrats being the lesser of two evils as well, but nader does need some more press he knows what he's talking about.
nobody raped rnader addy thats a joke, nobody gets anything past rnader, he lives for this stuff & has done it for over 40yrs, so go run back to your tyranny govt loving self
you kno wer not going get 3rd party candidates or independents elected in high places... but we can start aiming a bit lower and build on that.. instead of going straight for the presidency.. lets go the the house of representatives... lets take seats there!!!! if there are over 400 seats there.. if we take the house.. this movement might go somewhere... we really need to start getting those guys elected in the house...
@griffinpeter1 Yeah! Moore and Maher, are the two whores, that accompany Obama on foriegn trips without his wife, and sit beside him, and feed him communist grapes. These two, have always disgusted me. They are two of the greatest jackasses, that America has had the displeasure of producing.
I have to admit, seeing them on the floor begging Ralph made me want to just kick their heads off. Please answer this....Are they that stupid ? or are they a part of the corporate greed ??
@italianman2112 - Moore and Maher, are the two whores, that accompany Obama on foreign trips without his wife, and sit beside him, and feed him communist grapes. These two, have always disgusted me. They are two of the greatest jackasses, that America has had the displeasure of producing
Exactly! both Democraps and Republicunts are warmongering basterds, that serve for the corporations and the Zionist regime. Raplh N, Ron P, and Jessie V are the real American heroes. In hope many Americans educate themselves by 2012 and vote like a democratic citizen.
I wish when they have political debates they should put someone like Noam Chomsky there to correct their lies haha. Now that would be good for real democracy. But obviously they couldn't even begin to face him.
This was a detestable display. I lost respect for Maher and Moore from this segment. Nader is the man, and he has several times the balls and scruples (and eloquence) of everyone up there.
I feel the same way. That was pathetic. I usually like what Maher says, but I too lost respect for him here. These people complain about someone who is actually trying to make the political system better. This demonstrates why Democrats don't deserve the votes even of real liberals and progressives.
This clip is just hard to watch. After the elections finally set in, I think a lot of people will realize that Nader ran his best campaign in 08. (Yes, I know this isn't a video of the 08 campaign)
I never really liked Maher, he always seemed like a sell out and to me this proves it. It wasn't Naders fault the votes in Florida weren't recounted properly, it wasn't his fault many African-Americans were disenfranchised there, and it wasn't his fault the Supreme Court intervened in a "Democratic" process. It's time we gave a third party a chance (well in 4 years it will be time, but just work with me here). VOTE [Insert third party name here] 2012! It's not like things can get any worse.
Democrats are forgetting Bush would have won anyway. The voting machines aren't regulated by Federal, non-partisan government agents. They were regulated by the Florida government, which was run by his brother. They were made by a company run by a Bush supporter. the BBC investigated and proved that Katherine Harris knocked off thousands of blacks, and CBS killed the investigation because Jeb Bush denied it. Imagine the LAPD asking Charles Manson if Tex Watson killed somebody?
hmm...after learning a bit more about Nader, it's sad to see him being shut up like this. I suspect a lot of people were like me: we all marginalized Nader as the spoiler without truly knowing who he is. As a fan of Maher, I'm very disappointed in how he acted here. Instead of advocating that third parties should be heard, he simply buckles to the democrats. And Moore not having anything to say shows how much more he cares about being a liberal than doing the right thing.
Oh I understand why Bill Maher did that, but that's my problem with it. Instead of putting pressure on the liberal media to include third parties which is something I would think he knows is right, all he does is marginalize Nader and the great things he's done for this country. Is Nader a factor in Bush winning? Possibly. But Kerry doesn't deserve my vote purely on the basis that he's a democrat and no one candidate should feel entitled to support strictly because of party affiliation.
The "liberal media" is very small: the New York Times, Maher, Amy Goodman, Tavis Smiley, The Daily Show, Bill Moyers etc., but that is a lose definition of liberal. How can a corporate controlled media be liberal when they have so much power and money, which is why they want to conserve it.
Also, with regards to Moore, the reason that Moore openly supported Nader in 2000 only to dismiss him later just goes to show that he cares more about being associated with a liberal agenda even though he must know in his heart that Nader is a better candidate. The way he estranged Nader just because he didn't win and because of the unfair Democrat talking point of Nader costing the election shows me his true colors.
As far as a voter, I view a voter like a costumer at a restaurant. They walk in and they ask them "what is your favorite color red or blue". You are then seated with that color tables, napkins and waiter uniforms. Their is one dish, which the waiters, red or blue, get from the same kitchen. Not only do they not give you a choice on the dish, they only give you two colors, red or blue, if your favorite color is green you are screwed.
You're absolutely right, and the scenario you gave is a huge problem for those of us who actually want progress in this country. People are already self-defeating in their attitude of "well, third parties have no chance, why even try?" I'll give Obama one thing: he showed us the power of a mobilized grassroots movement. We should follow his example in getting information out about third parties so people don't have to feel like they're wasting their time in asking to sit at a green table.
He's also doing something brilliant on healthcare. Single-Payer Universal Healthcare polls very well: majority of americans support it, 60% of doctors support it and a large percentage of nurses. The only problem are the health care cartels' lobbies and pharma lobby(actual name), which are a large shareholder in our government. So he's going to put them out of business.
wow...

Rwilsoncpt 1 year ago 31
@Rwilsoncpt I am a Canadian, but if I was American, I don't know how I could NOT vote for Ralph Nader. He's the only one that has normal-guy priorities and is not bought by Wall Street.
bonheurbrun 9 months ago
@Rwilsoncpt Nadar, by taking the votes from the Democrat Al Gore in key states, denied Gore a victory over George W. Bush. Maher prefers that Democrats win over Republicans and the PM of Canada gives a good explanation why voting for a third party fails here in the US.

why dosent he run on the democratic tickit
sxcboy4u 1 year ago
@sxcboy4u because he's not a democrat he's better
ClassicRock8 1 year ago
@sxcboy4u Because the special interests groups are already aware of his politics. If he does not win the democratic primary, which he wouldn't because the business interests would smear him out of the primary race, he would be barred from running as an independent. There is no where else for a corporate fighting candidate to run except for a third party. And in that lies a broken, commerce controlling political system.

Nader won't run for either party, making his chances for getting his ideals beyond his office staff very small. It's great he knows how to fix government, but if he bullheadedly marginalizes his chances to actually change anything he's just an ineffectual "I told you so." Great.
RollingOrmond 1 year ago
If you notice, everyone is always wrong about Ralph Nader. He said the 2 parties are never good enough, that they won't serve the needs of the people over corporate interests. And they still buy into the 2 parties, like they aren't both funded by the same corporate dollars. Moore and Maher need to get their heads out of their asses, because clearly, in hindsight, Nader was right. But these idiots in the media marginalize the only person who tells the truth.

Thrice13 2 years ago 11
I never really liked Maher, he always seemed like a sell out and to me this proves it. It wasn't Naders fault the votes in Florida weren't recounted properly, it wasn't his fault many African-Americans were disenfranchised there, and it wasn't his fault the Supreme Court intervened in a "Democratic" process. It's time we gave a third party a chance (well in 4 years it will be time, but just work with me here). VOTE [Insert third party name here] 2012! It's not like things can get any worse.
NoJusticeNoPeace88 2 years ago 10

And Moore not having anything to say shows how much more he cares about being a liberal than doing the right thing.
wunderbeast 2 years ago 5
It was in the heat of facing four more years of Bush which is why Maher did that, and Michael Moore supported Nader openly in 2000.
tonyac42 2 years ago
Oh I understand why Bill Maher did that, but that's my problem with it. Instead of putting pressure on the liberal media to include third parties which is something I would think he knows is right, all he does is marginalize Nader and the great things he's done for this country. Is Nader a factor in Bush winning? Possibly. But Kerry doesn't deserve my vote purely on the basis that he's a democrat and no one candidate should feel entitled to support strictly because of party affiliation.
wunderbeast 2 years ago 2
The "liberal media" is very small: the New York Times, Maher, Amy Goodman, Tavis Smiley, The Daily Show, Bill Moyers etc., but that is a lose definition of liberal. How can a corporate controlled media be liberal when they have so much power and money, which is why they want to conserve it.
tonyac42 2 years ago
Also, with regards to Moore, the reason that Moore openly supported Nader in 2000 only to dismiss him later just goes to show that he cares more about being associated with a liberal agenda even though he must know in his heart that Nader is a better candidate. The way he estranged Nader just because he didn't win and because of the unfair Democrat talking point of Nader costing the election shows me his true colors.
wunderbeast 2 years ago 3
As far as a voter, I view a voter like a costumer at a restaurant. They walk in and they ask them "what is your favorite color red or blue". You are then seated with that color tables, napkins and waiter uniforms. Their is one dish, which the waiters, red or blue, get from the same kitchen. Not only do they not give you a choice on the dish, they only give you two colors, red or blue, if your favorite color is green you are screwed.
tonyac42 2 years ago 4
You're absolutely right, and the scenario you gave is a huge problem for those of us who actually want progress in this country. People are already self-defeating in their attitude of "well, third parties have no chance, why even try?" I'll give Obama one thing: he showed us the power of a mobilized grassroots movement. We should follow his example in getting information out about third parties so people don't have to feel like they're wasting their time in asking to sit at a green table.
wunderbeast 2 years ago 3
He's also doing something brilliant on healthcare. Single-Payer Universal Healthcare polls very well: majority of americans support it, 60% of doctors support it and a large percentage of nurses. The only problem are the health care cartels' lobbies and pharma lobby(actual name), which are a large shareholder in our government. So he's going to put them out of business.
