Someone should inform this idiot that the damned alternative to sugar used in most diet drinks has long-terms and severe side effects. They still are not certain or how many, as they FDA did not test nutra-sweet long enough prior to release. I still suffer dibilatating migraine headaches anytime I accidently ingest it...and it is so pervasive it is difficult to avoid.

What about those that drink diet soda. Is this tax intended only for those that aren't diet sodas? What about those that drink regular soda and manage to get enough exercise to keep off the pounds? Should they too be penalized because of the people who chose to overeat and underexercise? The answer isn't to tax the hell out of the obese because those same taxes will apply to those that aren't. I think at some point in time, parents and people have to be responsible for their own actions.

In a free society, taxes are collected in order to provide services such as the court system, the military and other institutions that protect our rights.

Allowing a politician to reengineer our society, using the threat of guns and jails and violence against those who don't wish to comply, is to accept an overt act of tyranny.

We not only need more taxes on sweets (government often has to pick up the tab for obesity related problems and dental problems), we need taxes on all foods known to have negative effects, such as meats, eggs, dairy, etc. At least kill those subsidies, and stoping having WIC subsidize producers who make crap. Stop letting the government from buying chicken and other unhealthy foods for distribution to schools.
