I rode this same line in 1983 behind B&O GM50 for the25th anniversary of the last running of the Royal Blue. Great trip! Got the photos uploaded on my channel. Most area railfans hang by the D.C. and OML Subs, largely ignoring the Philly Sub!
I too rode that trip. I remember getting a ton of cinders in my hair from riding in the recording car for long periods of time. Wonderful trip!! We got off in Sharon Hill and rode the Red Arrow trolley home.
I used to take all of the available steam trips in the Baltimore - Washington area. Chessie, Southern, etc. I rode behind or chased all of the great remaining steam locomotives of that era. I met Graham Claytor, Jim Bistline and Bill Purdie on Southern excursions. That was an outfit who really know how to run a steam excursion at mainline speed. I once clocked a Southern steam train at over 60 mph on the Southern main line near Bealeton, VA. Sadly, now they are all gone.
Great video - I was on that same trip. You knew when Ross Rowland was at the throttle you were in for a good ride. Super photo runbys right off the Susquehanna River bridge! Camden Station sure looks different now! Thanks for the memories!

@WMAJ6 Very true. Sad that there is no apprecication for
heritage these days. One can only imagine the attention
mainline steam would generate today in these areas.
Best be off to England to see mainline steam these days.

come up to fort wayne indiana the 765 npk still runs mainline, though she takes lots of maintainance to keep running.

@WMAJ6 Thanks for the comments. Who knew back then
that was the near the end of almost all mainline steam trips in the US. Things are so much better in the UK for steam excursions.
