I agree completely. His French is obviously perfect, but that's all there is. He conveys no passion, Don José isn't there at all. And the voice isn't prodigious, either. Alagna became a star because he emerged in a period when there simply wasn't anyone else, all the big names being old and declining - the same applies to Cura. And he's too short to wear tails, it makes him look like a penguin.

@beignet58 I heard Cura a couple of years ago live in Pagliacci. I never liked his voice in the first place, but this peformance was dreadful. He might as well have phoned in the performance. He was totally unengaged with what was going on onstage. If only he had worn tails...it would have provided some comic relief. At least something in his performance would have been interesting. Thank you for the penguin image. Now if I'm feeling a bit down, I can imagine Cura in tails and giggle.
@tdeane34 At 1:35, that's supposed to be an A flat, but he almost sings an A natural and at 2:49 the same thing happens (and at 3:04, actually). The only B flat in this aria occurs at 3:40 and he actually does ok. If you thought any of the previous notes were a Bflat, than he's singing even higher than what I say. This is in Dflat major. But even if the pitch is off, I like the interpretation.
@tdeane34 Agree. No doubt that this is one of the best arias ever composed, though. Who could guess that an opera published in the 1840's and only premiered the year Ravel was born would include an aria whose last three chords before the final note of the tenor are Aminor, Cmajor and Fmajor in the key of Dbmajor.

you're too kind i am afraid don't forget he sings he mother language and he's not even close to convince me that he betrayed he's country for a flower or a woman or being in a prison cell whatsoever
Roberto, you are the man! son interpretation de cet aria me donne toujours la chair de poule.elle est non seulement passionnee, mais aussi convaincante.merci pour la video

Alagna simply doesn't connect with this aria. I've heard it sung far better by other singers.

It's A flat both times, not A natural... both times!

@MardiGrasNewO I thought you were talking about the last high note. The second Ab is not that sharp but the first on is quite sharp.

Sin duda el repertorio frances... es cantado mejor por un frances; ese idioma tiene tantos matizes...es muy dificil cantarlo bien realmente.
