Yet you won't see Kenny in a Rolling Stone Best Guitarists list, nor Farlow, Kessel, Montgomery, Lowe, Smith - I could go on - yet these are simply the best there ever were (don't overlook Segovia, Bream) but the responders to RS polls are no-nothings without a clue about guitar players. Recently someone who can't find his own ass so he had to stick his head up someone else's posted that Ted Nugent is a better guitarist than Joe Pass!?!? KB, you keep on going; you're just one true, blue genius.
What is deserve ? I will try to help them up if it doesn't pull me down to much. I sometimes dont know why but I alwise know what i like. I like this, Thanks for posting
Great chart. I had the pleasure of hearing and meeting Mr. Burrell in Chicago twenty years ago. He'll never remember me, but I'll never forget him. I put down my drumsticks and picked up an archtop guitar. Never looked back, either. Just in from my gig tonight - last tune was Warm Valley, the Ellington standard so beautifully arranged by KB. Nobody will ever mistake me for him, but thanks for the inspiration, Mr. B. I couldn't have done it without you...
Caught this on the jazz station on TV. Holy crap. Big fan of 50's modal jazz n stuff, this is right up my alley. I heard Burrell worked with Coltrane, now I gotta find the stuff hehe...well this is enough to wanna pick up a guitar I'd say.
Mr. Kenny is a master Jazz-Blues guitar player. I like the fact the even though he can play complex stuff he sticks to a lot of blues based tunes. Blues feels good and for those who like to groove there is nothing better in jazz music.
Went to see Kenny live in concert three seats down was a guy in a wide brim hat and leather coat jamming off the sounds it was a happening until i got home and saw the same guy on tv it was Willie Nelson and the concert was awsome.
I just found a copy of Kenny's reissued CTI recording, "God Bless The Child" (the one with the strange Pete Turner photo on the cover). My uncle Major Holley played on Midnight Blue, and it's a shame Blue Note didn't produce or release anything else with them together. "God Bless The Child" has a cello quintet on most of the arranged tunes (Don Sebesky, of course!!), but it is exquisite music!! Thank you for posting this clip!!
If you listen to his lines, they would outright make perfect sense in rock music. Hell, he's clearly playing on a tube amp and it's not THAT quiet, as there is a nice rich very low gain overdrive going on. I love this, but as a rock guy I have an impulse to want to shout "Turn up just a bit man! that tone is ready to scream buddy!"
When I hear greatness like this I'm just grateful for ears that work and I'm lucky enough to be alive at a time when I can hear him. You run out of adjectives for this guy and BTW - who cares if he's Black, White or a Korean. Really, who gives a flying phuck???
Love it ! He played with some of the biggest names in jazz and is himself a legend in my eyes and ears... I especially love his early work with J. Coltrane. Thanks.
Love this! I am betting Van Morrison does too since it seems he was channeling it when he wrote "Moondance". and....
For all you race-ists - Get hip to the fact that there is only One - The Human Race, since Neanderthals died out 10,000 years ago, despite the apparent continued existence of what seems like direct descendants.
@enorbet2 You are 200% correct. The Human Race is what it's about and Kenny Burrell , being a humanitarian, would say the exact same words. You are spot on about Van's 'Moondance' too...reminds me of when Steely Dan took the intro to his "Song For My Father" and used it for "Rikki Don't Lose That Number". Best wishes to you, Kenny &' rovingeye2' for this video.
...this is really good...why is everyone so obsessed with race?...Beyonce and Halle would love to have his skin...they lighten theirs with photoshop and make-up....

Is this an A B A A form with the solo form matching the melody or does it change somewhere along the way? I'm using this song for an audition to Cornish College and would be grateful for any info. In the meantime I'll search around for a chord sheet...
@TheGypsy90 It is a 16 bar AB form -- 8 bars each section. The 1st is in fm and the 2nd is a descending chord sequence that ends on C7. There is an intro on the vamp of the A section and when Kenny switches from chords to the familiar bluesy melody, that's when the form starts. They play the head 2x. Then they follow the form for solos. Good luck!
@bluntobjct it does,nt has to be from 4th generation to be like Burrel,.if u are white and have children with a black lady, your kids will look like burrell,so it is allredy the first generation, but if your child has another child with a white lady then this will look whiter and probably will b even called as a White but is not..coz his granma is black..that is called CLEANIG OF THE RACE.
I'm one of those youths that feels like half of me is getting torn in half, thrust into a time I never saw. The other half wants to know everything about the future of science, cosmology, evolutionary biology, and of course, spaceships! :P

I'll never forget back in 1969, when I thought the world revolved on the Clapton/Beck/Page/Bloomfield/Hendrix axis, a shipmate turned me on the the Organ Grinder Swing album featuring Kenny Burrell on guitar. I almost fell off my chair listening to this warm, bluesy feel with advanced harmonic understanding and cool, unhurried delivery.I raved about it so much, the guy just let me have the album! One of the greatest...
DB@easguitar Listen to Grant Green, Barney Kessel, Django,Wes - real guitar players and innovators. Hendrix was also, Clapton only sometimes , (Greeny was better) but Beck , Page and Bloomfield were all 3rd rate wannabes with no soul.
I took up jazz guitar in 1975 and quickly learned that Kenny lived in the area. I was checking out a guitar at a music store once and when I looked up I saw Kenny listening to me. I was dumbfounded! He asked me what I thought of the guitar. He encouraged me to keep at it, and took the time to talk with me. He is a classy man, and I had the good fortune to hear him play live several times. Always a gentlemen, always sounded great and what a great ambassador for jazz. I love his playing.
Back in the '70's I worked at CFOR in Orillia, Ontario and had the late night jazz show. So many of the albums featured Kenny Burrell on guitar, I took to calling him the Ubiquitous Kenny Burrell. One of the greatest sounds of the jazz guitar.

You`ve just got to love his sound..such a distinctive voice..It doesn`t matter who plays faster or who plays louder..Ken plays Great Guitar Music and Perfect Jazz...!!
Yes, it's all here. Anyone who doesn't appreciate this, doesn't like it or understand it. Too bad, they don't deserve to and just make it all the more magical for those who do...
Driving to work with Kenny Burrell and looking at an amazing sunset, it didn't matter my heart was split in to. I fell in love with KB, well actually his music but you get what I mean!

Had the pleasure of seeing Kenny play in Hollywood at the
Catalina Club on July 23rd. A crowd of maybe 100 -- and
Stevie Wonder shows up for a guest appearance near the
end of the set! So Kenny's got a lot of fans.
