"...and a Tosca performance when she repeatedly kicked the supposedly dead body of the Scarpia, Lawrence Tibbett, to whom she had taken a personal dislike."
This woman kicked Lawrence Tibbet on stage? Oh lord, I think I've found my favorite Tosca! :)
She's the only singer i have heard phrase the approach to the high B-flat as Puccini wrote it, "Perche [breath] perche Signor" instead of Perche, perche [breath] Signor." I love it this way--I think it makes the B-flat easier--and I wish more sopranos would try it. Mr. Puccini knew what he was doing!
I have such a hard time placing voices when I hear these old recordings... To me, this sounds like a lighter voice than you might hear singing this in an opera house today. But it's hard to tell. All the same, it's absolutely beautiful!
I think you are right, franimalistic, though if they were actually lighter, or the recordings were less accurate than todays is a question. I always wonder what Caruso really sounded like, and Claudia Muzio, also. Could be we have bigger voices today. Enjoyed your comment. C.
Ljuba is a new voice for me in the era of Toscanini. Very nice. Your picture of her is not one to fool with - would not want to get on her persona non gratis list. Happily, John

Very interesting! I have listened to this for years, and now I really notice what you refer to. Yes, indeed, Mr. Puccini knew what he was doing.
