Timeless, chilling and relevant. Thanks Pandora, its not what I'd have thought to put on Gogol Bordello's radio station but a fortuitous coincidence placed it there and hence in the heart and mind of one more soul does his message find a home.
Wow. I got here because I visited Luang Prabang and am thinking about going again. What a powerful song. This time I'd like to know more about the history of US involvement in Vietnam and Laos so that I can appreciate my experience more. Bless the survivors of war and violence.
@137babylauraloo It's a Vietnam protest song. Luang Prabang is a city in Laos, and if you know anything about the war you'll find out that we left Vietnam through Laos and Cambodia.
I heard this song on Pandora a few weeks ago on a station seeded with Sea shanties. Its a very powerful song, and carries a brutal and clear message about war.
I first heard this song at one of Dave's live performances, probably at the Hatch cafeteria at the UMass student union around 1973. This came near the end of the last set. Where did that come from? It was shocking but it needed to be said.
This song has two hands of middle fingers pointed to the credulous. And I'm grateful for it. Never disrespect those who fight for the country, but so appreciative of this song.
Great song, but why did it take me almost 37y after the fall of Saigon to hear it? Thanks Country Joe and Wolfgang's.

By the way, don't bother trying Luang Prabang radio. Think this song is one of a kind.

It's cool that Luang Prabang is in Laos. Is he talking about our involvement there in the 60s and 70s?
URNothingAndUKnowIt 9 months ago
Right there with y'all. Unaware of this without Pandora. Love it, I know Vietnam vets who would echo the sentiment of this very song. Awesome!

This song came on my Pandora station a couple of weeks ago and it's haunted me ever since. This is real dissent.
What happened to our protest songs in the last forty years? Have they pulled all our teeth out?
abracadaverous 10 months ago 2
@abracadaverous
I just heard this on Pandora as well - I've never heard it before.
I agree with you about it being haunting.

True American heritage is a great hybrid of immigrant pain. Irish tunes, Slave songs, Appalachian English Poverty...
Pain is the best catalyst of music talent.
