@KiittyCupcake It won't spoil it, it's a very bizarre film and that's just one interpretation (which one can work out right at the start of the film) - you may come to a completely different conclusion.
just finished watching the film, i understood it, but it was boring, and just not that great. i'd rather watch this trailer over and over for an hour and 45 mins than the actual movie. and idk why michael haneke feels the need to make his scenes drag on for soo long, i'm not a fan of quick cut editing, but some of the scenes were just ridiculous, funny games had the same problem.
As a warning to anyone planning to watch this film: do not expect it to be a fast paced thriller. It is a bit slow, with tremendous high tension. It is one of my all time favorite films, by my favorite director of all time.
what a terrible film. the shot from 0.15 to 0.21 constitutes for at least 70% of the film, when half the time, there's nothing going on. films need more camera movement to make it interesting. the lack of such convention just makes the film boring and uninteresting to watch. the concept was great; the execution, not so much.
I think the whole movie is an allegory of the relationship between France and Algeria... and of course the repressions of the french domination and massacres.
@lizzylizardson I don't think the intention of the tapes was to scare the Georges. I think Majid's son did it to get Georges to meet up with his father and to feel guilty for his cruel treatments toward Majid in the past and to apologize. It just didn't turn out the way he wanted it due to Georges stubbornness and his childish attitude.
@carwashcunt I shall have to watch it again, but I really liked it the first time I watched it, but I can't really remember how it ended, then again my taste in films is quite weird tbh :P
@BenjaminPelletier92 I agree, this gives it the impression of some dumb slasher/torture porn film. Nothing like the well made and subtle masterpiece that it is.

Sorry, but that's ridiculous. Put Ben Affleck in Auteuil's role, and the deeply talented Megan Fox in Binoche's role, THEN we'd have ourselves a picture. I agree with Boll to direct though.
As i understood correctly the director made room for us to make our own conclusion. This is mine and i come from a country that had been over centuries over powered by greater forces.
In this movie to me personally i dont find it hard to hide guilt on the contrary i think that the Algerians in this movie are the ones that i find most offending. What did the French owe them at all? Why would George have to do anything more than just sleep over one day and all is DONE when it is done in ur head
An utterly masterful construction, directed with incredible restraint and 'presence'. Haneke never wastes a frame, never lets a sene run in second longer than it needs to run, always with a colder eye to the absolute essentials.
It's isn't said explicitly. And the film is open-ended on purpose. Many theorize it was the son, which is probably the most "realistic" choice, albeit "boring" one.
However, I theorize it was the director, Michael Haneke(I know it sounds crazy, but listen early on when Juliet Binoche gets a phone call from an unnamed stranger, it sounds like him) - watch FUNNY GAMES; Haneke loves playing with cinema in the 2 worlds of fact & fiction.
This film is definitely not to be taken on a literal scale.
I watched this recently and I thought it was a brilliant film. I'd recommend it to anyone. This trailer doesn't do it any justice though. It leaves the audience with the impression that a little bleeding boy with an axe is terrorising the family which lends to the idea of the supernatural. Poor marketing, great film.
And how can you firmly suppose that is certain to make an affirmation that the "a little bleeding boy WITH an axe is terrorising the family" is false (supernaturally) or exactly as it should be real (because is possible any normal person to feel hatred and discount on others and that's very common pattern in childs and envious decadent persons; obviously everyone should know that they are the incarnation of honesty (even if they are lying).
I'm not really sure what you are saying here. My point was that the trailer sells the film more as a 'slasher' film with the bleeding child as the villian. It tries to oversimplify in it's marketing
And what I already said is the possibility of the bleeding child being the villain (you watched already), nevertheless if the "oversimplify in it's marketing" "should be" in the artistic way of the film style, so the commercial would spend 10 minutes, and I'm not exaggerating.
Prove it, Ohh I think you can't, because actually this film is a highly speculative film, and thee proven argument is that transubstantiation of magical tapes that appears magically behind and through the wall and the protagonist himself is by certain impossible, because I don't think that the director knows about Quantum Physics, and if he knows he would know that even if that happened the information of the tape wouldn't be precise to the public.
I agree, the trailer gives a different feel of that when you watch the full movie. It feels much more commercial and hollywoodic than that what it really is.
Interesting angle. Never thought of that. It being a long still take does give that impression. It happens many times in the film when the scene cuts and you think you're watching live action when in fact it's a tape. I don't think we're suppose to know. Haneke leaves so much open.
The final shot is dumbfounding in this movie. The two boys in the film - are actually friends. It implies that they are the ones who were taping the house. It appears that the son knew a lot of what the husband and wife kept "hidden" (his past, her affair), so he was taping the house so they would realize their lies...
I think it does lend to that idea as the two characters do seem to know each other. It's only "seem" though and anything could be happening in that final scene. It would explain Pierrot's change in behaviour and also tie in with the idea of that the boy is mimicking his father's feelings of abandonment and jealousy as a child. Many many questions. Great movie.
This is the kind of movie that people watch to fell smart, even though, it bores you to death, later you can brag about the fact that you saw it. In fact, most of haneke´s movies are like that.
In fact everyone is in some way ignorant, by that so explaining the details to you, because anyone will never know everything, and so will be ever in some ways a ignorant; so if you already "feel" (not fell) smart (another way to say that you aren't smart) or better saying intelligent, you really shouldn't watch anything because you have anything you need, and inexorably concluding you really even need to exist anymore because you are and know everything in the Universe. Congratulations.
None exactly, because you didn't saw any "fucking" related to me, and if you are trying to understand what I had written I suggest you to read again what I said (not to you, to macandrews136).
If you already imagined what a I already said so you can say that you're an arrogant person (not in the nihilistic way) and so I support you to irritate everyone here, IF you already watched the film, that's called Caché.
This movie was so boring to me but at the same time it was hard to look away....so I saw bits and pieces..not my cup of tea but I can see why others would be intrigued by it.
So who was the person most suspected to have sent those tapes? And what was up with that last shot?
Great movie. It's like he's taking the movie language to a different level. Building the tension, leaving long shots to long but not to long, playing with viewer perception. Looking 71 fragments you can see totally different film, but it's like he is really getting what's the point of the specific time or place.
As a student of communications and media studies I didn't see any art in this film at all. The only creative aspect in this movie was the begining when suddenly the tape rewinds and we didn't know they were watching a tape. Im really getting sick and tired of these people making effortless crap and and people calling it art. How bout I just go video tape a rock for 2 hours and watch "artistic" people call it beautiful because they can think up 1000 diffrent metaphores for a rock. Its bullshit.
Maybe to appreciate the movie more, you should become more familiar with France's (or Europe's) past with colonialism and immigration and the impact on present-day society; the theme 'guilt' (which is indissoluble connected to colonialism and immigration/segegration) is presented metaphorically here in the thriller-setting of one man's family history. A wealthy, white guy who really don't want to think about his own past. The same holds true for European societies.
European society and its presents on guilt is a reason why I should appreciate this movie more because they present "guilt" in a metaphorical way as paying tribute to France's Colonial and Immigration History?
You are very naive to believe this. Please watch the film again. Haneke, the director, is one of the modern greats. The film offers everything and confirms nothing. It leaves the audience thinking about what they have just seen, leaving the audience to make their own decisions. Please don't write back an angry comment, I just want you to give the film another chance as this is one of the greatest films of the decade. Thank you
"Student of Media And Communication Studies". Says it all really. I guess I'll be ordering my Big Mac and Fries from you then. If you don't "get" Haneke......Maybe you should go and study something else.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Congrats on "getting" this boaring talentless piece of shit just like all the rest of you pathetic bandwagon "Art" lovers, lets see how far your bullshit studies take you.
Erm......ok. If I ever give up my job as a TV producer. Maybe I'll do that. Three points: 1. You refer to Haneke as "art" - He's as easy to watch as they come. 2. It's spelt "boring", not "boaring". 3. I'll have a big fucking mac and fries please.
I am studying this now in one of my classes. I don't think that Haneke created this and intended that the audience know who sent the tapes at the end. But it's an art film so it's open to interpretation. However you interpret this it's obvious that it's a brilliant film. The end shot is symbolic so it's not definite that it was Pierrot. When viewing the commentary Haneke had said it was about guilt.
Want to see a video of a house and a cliché plot then an ending that goes nowhere. Leave it to the French to be too creative to the point where originality boarders on garbage, bravo Binochet! Brilliant you say, I say I want my money back.
Why buy a car that has an engine. Why try to determine a rocket ship's trajectory using calculus, who needs it! lol. faraz1729 must be a woman due to the use of logic. If a movie has no plot then there is no movie.
What a horrendous analogy. Cars and rocket ships are practical objects that are bound by physical laws as to whether they'll function or not. Art is not. Art is a human endeavor that has the ability to come the closest to absolute freedom. So your argument is flawed from the start. Who is this art-fascist dictator who told you a movie must have a plot, anyway?
Oh, and I'm a man so you're wrong about that too. Thanks for playing though.
If you're a man that is sad. So you're telling me a rocket ship or a car is not a form of art? So I guess their designed themselves. Neither is boundless and both have their limitations meaning whatever the mind can come up with. What we thought was science fiction in the past has become science fact today. At least a car or a rocket ship is useful forms of art.
It's these exceptions to the rules that have paved the way for people like Andres Serrano and his Piss Christ calling it art. Fascist, ha! Freedom is doing what is right not whatever the hell you want. Get a clue.
this film is only effective if you have been through the whole process of seeing american horror movies a lot, because it builds on prejudice of what happens when built because of those (typically from an american hollywood schoo of thought/film) horror movies.
I agree. Michael Haneke's films in general really tend to toy with what we think of what a horror film or a thriller should be. There's so many times when you think something might happen but it doesn't. It's also like with the tapes. The film isn't about who sent the tapes or why it's how the people react.
the pace of the film is brilliant. it slowly....slowlY....slowLY...sloWLY....slOWLY....sLOWLY....SLOWLY builds up the tension till you've damn near fallin' off your seat. and then.....well, watch the film.
I just brought this movie on a whim. I've briefly heard about it, but not much. I was at the LA County Fair and Hollywood Video was there. This movie was being sold for 1.99 I just read the back and brought it with two other movies, which i also brought on a whim and never seen. Cache was an excellent film, but i to don't think i fully understand it.
i really enjoy films like this one, makes you think.
I don't really understand WHO was doing the videos. I wanna say more, but not here because i'll ruin it for people. is there a way to private message?
Finally, he starts lying and eventually tells the kid to kill the rooster, which leads to the kid being kicked out of the apartment and living a life of far poorer quality than he would have if he had stayed with our hero. THIS is where it gets weird.
i got that the killing of the palestinian? (ive forgotten the boys ethnicity, im sorry) is a very important part of the movie. When the boys parents are killed and our hero takes them in, everything is fine but he begins to get jealous.
it's about living with your own culpability. Should you be responsible for your past? The principal caracter seems to deny is past, which keeps chasing him. The tapes and the drawings are not really important, Haneke likes to send his viewers in many direction so they can be part of the movie.
Everything is about the communication between humans. The first image of the movie, remember, is the street. After two minutes, you understand that this image is not made for you, but for the protagonists. This is the first trick. There are many others. With this image, you can understand that communication is not simple and that you cannot base your analysis on your first impression.
you need to just see it for yourself and make your own mind up about it. it's very strange and each viewer/critic/fan seems to make something different of it
yeah i saw it a month or soo ago and yes i didn't understand it entirely although it was brillant. Its just very abstract, which i guess is like life soo..hmm those were my thoughts!

@Jawoosh
The same holds true for European societies.
paulgroeser 3 years ago
European society and its presents on guilt is a reason why I should appreciate this movie more because they present "guilt" in a metaphorical way as paying tribute to France's Colonial and Immigration History?

Blah, blah.....tosser.

@ Jawoosh.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Congrats on "getting" this boaring talentless piece of shit just like all the rest of you pathetic bandwagon "Art" lovers, lets see how far your bullshit studies take you.
Jawooosh 3 years ago
Erm......ok. If I ever give up my job as a TV producer. Maybe I'll do that. Three points: 1. You refer to Haneke as "art" - He's as easy to watch as they come. 2. It's spelt "boring", not "boaring". 3. I'll have a big fucking mac and fries please.
ilyushenko 3 years ago 5
Furthermore....you spelt "metaphors" incorrectly too in your previous post. Fucking pleb.

It is impolite to correct spelling errors of individuals who are using their non-mother tongue.
.
If you "get" the Virgin Birth, could you explain that for me breifly, please?
.
Cheers.

This movie looks great, I will watch it, is like a psycological thriller, right??? but I heard is kind of weird
kondurperufour 3 years ago
I am studying this now in one of my classes. I don't think that Haneke created this and intended that the audience know who sent the tapes at the end. But it's an art film so it's open to interpretation. However you interpret this it's obvious that it's a brilliant film. The end shot is symbolic so it's not definite that it was Pierrot. When viewing the commentary Haneke had said it was about guilt.

WHO SENT THE GODDAMN TAPES????
donnie10855 3 years ago
Doesn't even matter.
faraz1729 3 years ago 2
The movie really isn't about who sent the tapes.
lelandb123 3 years ago
watched it yesterday. As its name. Still hidden until the end.

Want to see a video of a house and a cliché plot then an ending that goes nowhere. Leave it to the French to be too creative to the point where originality boarders on garbage, bravo Binochet! Brilliant you say, I say I want my money back.
superdleg 3 years ago
Leave it to an idiot like you to watch every film for cliché things like plot development and ending.
faraz1729 3 years ago
Why buy a car that has an engine. Why try to determine a rocket ship's trajectory using calculus, who needs it! lol. faraz1729 must be a woman due to the use of logic. If a movie has no plot then there is no movie.
superdleg 3 years ago
What a horrendous analogy. Cars and rocket ships are practical objects that are bound by physical laws as to whether they'll function or not. Art is not. Art is a human endeavor that has the ability to come the closest to absolute freedom. So your argument is flawed from the start. Who is this art-fascist dictator who told you a movie must have a plot, anyway?
Oh, and I'm a man so you're wrong about that too. Thanks for playing though.
faraz1729 3 years ago
If you're a man that is sad. So you're telling me a rocket ship or a car is not a form of art? So I guess their designed themselves. Neither is boundless and both have their limitations meaning whatever the mind can come up with. What we thought was science fiction in the past has become science fact today. At least a car or a rocket ship is useful forms of art.
superdleg 3 years ago
Cars and rockets are not art, you idiot. Go look up the definition of art and try again.
And who said they're designed themselves? Your reading comprehension sucks.
faraz1729 3 years ago
Idiot. Your liberal until you grow up, dumb kid. Also, look up the meaning of fascist. I'm done with you.
superdleg 3 years ago
It's these exceptions to the rules that have paved the way for people like Andres Serrano and his Piss Christ calling it art. Fascist, ha! Freedom is doing what is right not whatever the hell you want. Get a clue.
superdleg 3 years ago
Give one reason why the Piss Christ is not art. Good luck, art-fascist.
faraz1729 3 years ago
this film is only effective if you have been through the whole process of seeing american horror movies a lot, because it builds on prejudice of what happens when built because of those (typically from an american hollywood schoo of thought/film) horror movies.
very interesting film.
jackjohn6921 3 years ago
I agree. Michael Haneke's films in general really tend to toy with what we think of what a horror film or a thriller should be. There's so many times when you think something might happen but it doesn't. It's also like with the tapes. The film isn't about who sent the tapes or why it's how the people react.
lelandb123 3 years ago
Quite possibly the best film in the last 10 years. It builds the tension so much, its almost unbearable!!
t0xiCity8 4 years ago 2
Haneke is the best social commentator in cinema right now.

great film. juliette binoche was awesome as always. but the suspense is just gripping.
ptalex1976 4 years ago
the pace of the film is brilliant. it slowly....slowlY....slowLY...sloWLY....slOWLY....sLOWLY....SLOWLY builds up the tension till you've damn near fallin' off your seat. and then.....well, watch the film.

so were Pierrot and Majid's son in it? I'm almost sure, but I guess no one can answer this.

Finally, he starts lying and eventually tells the kid to kill the rooster, which leads to the kid being kicked out of the apartment and living a life of far poorer quality than he would have if he had stayed with our hero. THIS is where it gets weird.
bmeeker2 4 years ago
i got that the killing of the palestinian? (ive forgotten the boys ethnicity, im sorry) is a very important part of the movie. When the boys parents are killed and our hero takes them in, everything is fine but he begins to get jealous.
bmeeker2 4 years ago
It's a very well done movie, but I'm still not sure I understand it. If you've seen it, you know what I mean..
bmeeker2 4 years ago
you are not kidding. damn this movie is weird. i've tried to understand it but nothing. and i've really tried. what did you understand?
wakkosan 4 years ago
it's about living with your own culpability. Should you be responsible for your past? The principal caracter seems to deny is past, which keeps chasing him. The tapes and the drawings are not really important, Haneke likes to send his viewers in many direction so they can be part of the movie.
kakun001 4 years ago
Everything is about the communication between humans. The first image of the movie, remember, is the street. After two minutes, you understand that this image is not made for you, but for the protagonists. This is the first trick. There are many others. With this image, you can understand that communication is not simple and that you cannot base your analysis on your first impression.
kakun001 4 years ago
God I NEED to see this! what did you think of it??
actingchick25 4 years ago
you need to just see it for yourself and make your own mind up about it. it's very strange and each viewer/critic/fan seems to make something different of it
rumblegirl 4 years ago
yeah i saw it a month or soo ago and yes i didn't understand it entirely although it was brillant. Its just very abstract, which i guess is like life soo..hmm those were my thoughts!
