the whole album is a pure gem - that is art I mean colourfoul, catchy deliciously dark - from the 1st to the last track it sends you away in another place ! fucking brilliant
the latest 2 disc remastered release of this is the ultimate New Order album, I can't get enough of Movement, been listening to it over and over since the 90s.
I don't see why the hate this so much, maybe it's the time of it's release - Shortly after Ian Curtis' passing, and just reformed under a new name.
I think they may of felt Ian was an essential part of their band that was missing, as they were no longer Joy Division, and continuing without Ian was hard.
Only started listening to New Order about a month ago. I go to college with this older dude who is mad into all these bands, he grew up with them. He put some New Order on in the car when we were driving back to town and I was instantly in love with them. This stuff can not be touched.
Forget what "they" say. The spirit of Joy Division lives on in Movement and this would have been an extremely similar (and naturally progressive) album to what they would have made had Ian stayed with us, as they were beginning to embrace electronica...
"All the time it takes to cut through but live in doubt." Hannett's production really shines here. The song sounds like it was recorded in a vacuum. Critics believe the production totally drowns out the vocals and instruments and robs the songs of any power they could have contained, but I think the cold, distant sound is appropriate given the pessimistic lyrics and the state the band members were in at the time.
This is not there best nor worst album.....they were just finding their sound with a new lead singer and some heavier use of electronics......every new order album has atleast 4 great tracks......they dont have a worst album in my opinion, just some not so great tracks on a few. People seem to think this album is bad cause Barney talk/sings and the vocals are drowned out. Also they compare it to JD.....whose STILL is considered horrid by a bunch of wankers.
In a parallel universe somewhere Ian didn't die and sang this song and it was magnificent! But somehow I can't hear his vocals on 'Temptation' and subsequent NO songs ('tho 'Murder' was an instrumental that would have suited Ians vocals). 'Movement' is Joy Divisions 'Coda', their full stop - Ian didn't know where they could go musically after 'Closer' - this album is as near as we can get to that answer - that's why we love it I guess. It's not really 'New Order' is it?
Best NO album and as good as any JD album. People that talk shit about this album are either not being honest withselves or they are profoundly retarded.
I agree with many of the people here, Movement was their strongest, most cohesive album. Some of the moods of later albums varied too much, this album hits the darkness and doesn't stop.
Its no way as dark as JD's two albums, but its not that far off. No one could write lyrics like Ian Curtis, but the music was always arranged by Bernard.
Sucks Ian had to go. We were all cheated out of some fantastic songs, that never came about.
im glad im not alone thinking this is their best album.theres a sincerity about it that touches.Though i like most of their albums since.I just wish Bernard would stop jumping around on stage...
@charjl I've been wondering about that too ... I've been going through all of their albums, and although there are moments of brilliance here and there, none of them comes close to Movement. Maybe they don't like this one because it sounds too much like Joy Division?
@qu1et well this album came out shortly after Ian's death, so i'm guessing their feelings toward it have something to do with the state they were all in during it's production/recording. also, if you think about it, this isn't the sound most people associate with New Order. the comment that was made by them (i believe it was Bernard) on this album was made some time after synthpop made them all rich.
@qu1et Probably true there. They were obviously going through a bad time and Gillian Gilbert on synths did bring something new to the band - probably more of a movement away from the darker post-punk sound that was so synonymous with this time. Barney, until he found his own style, tried to copy Ian to some extent in the way he sang and Barney's voice, although not bad, is so much weaker. However, Movement is still an amazing album, but I appreciate NO throughout their career.
@charjl That view is understandable considering that New Order were less and less dark and more and more Pet Shop Boys-like with every album ("Get Ready" being the exception), as this probably also reflected the band members' changing musical tastes. Also, NO were probably sick of being unfavorably compared to JD. But "Movement" definitely is great on its own terms and sounds like nothing else out there. I even like it more than "Closer".
@HeadlandRoad Touche. it all just comes down to a matter of opinion, i guess. although considering the circumstances that this album was recorded under, i can understand where they're coming from.... but either way, i still like this album
@LegRoom3 don't agree the album is timeless and New Order's best. They may of hated it cause it was too raw for them and at a dark time. It just sucks they couldn't have evolved more in this direction. Came close with Low-Life and Power, Corruption.... completely lost it after "86..
True it's a shame how something so powerful eventually became Rick Astley in drag....that's right, Technique sounds like Rick fucking Astley, total hair salon background music.
@Armalyte75 I agree their best. I remember back in the early 80s there was a t shirt stating "before there was new order, there was JOY DIVISION" I still like this album. but I think future ones were too dancy and poppy. I do not see Ian going this route..
@Armalyte75 u are right after substance 87 they lost it never bought aanymore tracks 81-87 there was and still produced the some of the best ever tracks
the electro bassline reminds me of No More War by Bronski Beat from four years later
