I knew Houma in the past as a 8,9 year old boy in 1964, my family moved there from Colo., and thank god left there. I recall the swamp was all around the city, the city was spilt by whites only signs, two Mormon missioniers were found dead in the swamp behind our house in chains, the klan came to vist at night to see what we were doing there, a sniper fired at my school, I heard the prinicple of the school say about intergration "I don't mind the niggers, but I can't stand the dirty indians".
dereksbuds4u, where on earth did u learn that the Houma people r Ojibwe? Exactly how much destruction did Houma communities endure during the hurricanes? And, most importantly, if you were living in southeastern Louisiana in December of 2004, did anything out of the normal occur? How is the state of the present day Houma communities?
I live in Montegut & Im a "Houma's" Indian, & We dont live on stilts , our home's are on "pilings" , & as far as the 8ft of water , yeah , down the bayou where i live , not in houma
Okay, wow. So listen people, I'm not sure where you live, but I can assure you that all this footage was shot in and around Houma- some of the footage is from the DuLac area- as the areas closer to the Bayou were the ones most affected by the storms. The driving shot, I believe, was off of Rt 57 (though that was almost 4 years ago).
Apparently none of you who commented really watched the video... They were wrong with some of the areas, but for the most part this video is accurate... Most pics were from Montegut, Chauvin, Leeville, and Golden Meadow... Some idiot says "we dont have many houses on stilts or shimp boats in houma" What a fucking idiot... The basis of this city is Shrimp... Everything built from there... Know what you are talking about before you post shit on the internet...
you are a moron. we are talking about houma. and no we dont have many shimpboats if any. you are talking about different cities. the only shimpers ive ever seen in houma are the ones that come to buy filters from us from golden meadow. and what is your problem? you dont need to be so hostile.
sure i crossed the twin spans. many times. no houses with stilts or anything till you get to maybe bourg and larose. maybe 1 or 2 but not all over the place. getting back to the major point of my 4 month old comment. none of these pics are of houma.
I am Ojibwe and we do not reside in that area. We are lake huron first nations people. Allways been in the lake huron hunting lands so this is stated wrong...
Watching the video again, NONE of these images are from Houma. Which is well above sea level. 8 feet of water? Not even if Katrina would have hit us head on...
agreed. ive lived in houma my whole life. i used to deliver filters out of town to golden meadow which is what these clips look like. some maybe from closer to new orleans. we dont have many houses on stilts or shimp boats in houma XD.
Where do you live? By the mall??? haha... Dont have many houses on stilts? Are you kidding me? Ever been to a place called Theriot? or what about Chauvin? Idiot
There are serious statical errors in the presentation of this video. Houma is NOT predominantly Ojibwe indian. I've lived here for 15 years and never even HEARD of Ojibwe indians. There are Houmas Indians because thats where the city got the name. The population of Houma is close to 300k people. Not all which are as stupid as those shown in this video. The images in this video are from areas much further south than Houma. Houma had minimal to no damnage from both hurricanes. Get your story right
I stay up here, so there is a safe place for my people to come up to. I get so home sick at times it hurts.

"Documenting the lives of people living in Houma, Louisiana- most of whom are Ojibwe indians- after hurricanes Katrina and Rita."
I've lived in Houma for 15 years and I've only known 15 or so Native Americans.

Owning a shrimp boat used to be a major money maker for this region, and still is embedded within the culture.
The pictures were pulled from the home page of the United Houma Nation, so I suggest you take it up with them.
