Now play the same frets 5, 3 and open.

For an absolute beginner, it's an average lesson, otherwise, this lesson fails. Honestly, this is not the first song a beginner should learn. Use the name and the number of the string. It re-inforces the learning process ("strum the 6th string, E") The tuning is open G, so you should show the student how to tune properly, otherwise the sound is crap. This song is played with a slide, so get one to show the student. (Or use a substitute.) Go take lessons to learn how to teach guitar.
