Aaron The "Juiced " Pryor.... This Win is always going to be questioned. And in the end Burt Sugar said it best, you don't mix water with water. An illegal substance was used and that will neve be in doubt. No drug test after the fight made it worse.
But a completely clean rematch with an even more brutal version of the same outcome kinda makes it irrelevant anyway. Especially considering the fact that Arguello, being the "good guy" of the fight was no doubt unfairly receiving a few rounds on the scorecards he didn't deserve
@Ronz93 Floyd dont have to use his arms...he can just avade and parry...but Aaron is like a more skilled Version of Pacman..better defense so Iunno who would win with Floyd vs Aaron
Saw this fight live , to this day I can't believe how many solid shots Pryor took without barley flinching. In the 2nd round while on the ropes he may have been stunned, and a couple of other times. But as far as getting on his bicycle , not once.
@abudujana13 yep thanks to the p.e.d..the guy used all kinds shakes and drugs everytime he got in the ring..pac wouldve destroyd him with that left hand..oscar wouldve stopped him also i feel.
Pryor was amazing to have all that energy to fire punches non-stop, but I still believe he was taking illegal drugs. A non-drugged human body won't be able to fire those many punches in a 15-round fight. This was an epic fight!
@tubemelly24 there was always suspicion about that, but, did you see the rematch...Pryor was under close scrutiny and won even more handily...agree totally about the epic fight thing....if boxers fought like that today, mma might not have taken over as much as it did....
This is when boxing was at its best. Fighters today will not go 15 rounds of straight war. tThey don't even train as hard as the fighters in the past. This was an epic fight for both of them and they became good friends after the two wars they faced each other in. Arguello even had Pryor come to Nicaragua to help Arguello with his campaign when he was running for office. Besides Arguello didn't hit him with as many body shots as he normally did with other opponents. Body shots beat anything.
No taking away it was an awesome fight, but tainted, I watched nearly every fight pryor had, since I was from Cincinnati, and I saw on several fights, lower class fighters, would at least knock pryor down, he was not knocked out, but was at times easily knocked down, but he never fought anyone that could keep him down, and when Arguello threw that right hand that bent Pryor's head straight back, I said right then, it's over, pryor didnt even go down, he just popped his head up and came on,
Also whatever was in the bottle did affect the outcome on top of the fact that pryor was severely addicted to drugs at the time and probably was on something else going into the fight, I remember watching it at the time, and as soon as it ended, pryor ran over to the ropes hanging over, they asked him questions, he sounded like a retard that was drunk, he couldnt answer a basic question on the fight, he slurred everything, clearly on something strong, I will never forget that.
I don't think the bottle was irrevelant because, without th bottle, pryor could have lost that 1st fight, and by the 2nd fight, Arguello was mentally destroyed, he knew he hit pryor with his best stuff the 1st fight and didnt faze him, if he had won the 1st time, he would have known he could beat him and there might not have been a 2nd fight then.
Just a fantastic fight , but I agree the fact of what was in that bottle will always tarnish Pryor. Arguello was just one great fightre and an even better a caring human being. Like alot of the comments I also was a Pryor fan too. As for Pryor hanging with Duran , that would be a hard call. Pryor would not have been afraid of Duran , and the Man with Hands of stone would have pressed him at every turn. My money would have been on Pryor , but I would have been very nervous.
i loved both guys but my instinct and later events tell me there was an illegal stimulant in that bottle and it is almost, as a boxing fan and lover of boxers, too painful and tragic to say but i'll say it anyway
No he wasnt? Pryor NEVER made any attempt to go to welterweight. If he did both Hearns and Leonard would have annilated him and i say this as a pryor fan. Pryor was too short and his lack of technical skills was all too apparent along with the fact that he struggled to knock out an over the hill alexis arguello who started out as a featherweight.
Aaron pryor is one of my favourite fighters. Pryor was very very exciting to watch and i dont think anyone WANTED to fight him but if he really wanted Leonard or Hearns he would have moved to welterweight.
Hearns at 17 was still growing in size and power when pryor beat him as an amateur but when hearns turned pro and grew up, he had a punch that could knock out light heavyweights in a welterweights body. Hearns would have ko`d pryor.
Duran skipped the jr welterwieght divsion altogether to fight Leonard, could've been a great fight but Pryor wouldn't be able to hang with a 1979-80 Duran.
@bluemonkjd thats not true look whio he did last 12 or more rounds with hearns 48 ko's duran 70 ko's and hagler 52 ko's now pryor has a inferior number of ko's in comparison to all these guys so i think your wrong about that but The Cincinnati cyclone was great i you too remember i dnt think the hawk was a marquee fighter wat i mean the reward v risk for fighting him would be high this is the only reason why leonard didn't fight him or McCallum
What a fight!!!! I mean what a fight!! Pro boxers don't fight like this very much these days!! These 2 were terrific. I miss these old boxers, I was probably 11 or 12 watching this fight. Man oh man!!!
@1hotandsmartman All we can do is speculate my friend. Is was great to watch the boxers in that era. I think it had the greatest number of really good fighters than any other era.
damn this video only has slightly over 6,000 views... one of the best fights of all time... so much better than UFC, and contemporary boxing matches... you just don't get fights like this anymore... they don't make 'em like arguello and pryor... HAWK TIME! A squared... two of the greatest of all time...
its a shame that these boxers got into the cocaine adiction cause both were great warriors alexis was killed in nicaragua over political issues i dont know if prior is still alive but they were great figthers
IMO, Aaron Pryor is the EPITOME of the kind of fighter that other champions would duck. Why WOULD others want to take him on? Besides the fact that he was an absolute fearsome animal in the ring, he did not enjoy the marquee, big money status that some others did. So really the only draw would be to fight him for honor's sake -- and how many people place that high a premium on honor, willing to risk their title, their health, & plain old nasty pain?
You know, it's a funny thing, each time I hear SRL say "Alex" or "Argwello", I recall how much I enjoyed watching the beating "no mas" duran gave leonard in their first fight
A better first round than Hagler vs Hearns.

Now THIS is boxing. Sucks that they met so late in their careers. These guys had potential to make a GREAT rivalry. Sucks they only fought twice.

Arguello is in over his head. Pryor is too much faster than he is. In comparison, poor Arguello swings like a rusty gate.
