The "Nazi" who saved him (along with other fellow "Nazi's" saved other Poles from the Nazis....so sad that he couldn't have been saved. If there is a heaven, I'm 100% sure that, he's there now.
what a fascinating story this is, even though that general was a killer and nazi and all that he saved Szpulman for some reason, I just watched Pianist and it's just so heartbreaking anyways all the jews that are killed by nazis are in heaven and all the nazis that killed jews are in hell burning, God bless
I just finished watching the movie it was a really good movie, it's nice that we have people in this world like that Capt!! I wonder why they didn't free him?
@chapinwrestler130 According to the book The pianist", the Soviet officers thought his claim to have saved a Jew an outrageous lie so they tortured him. "He died with his spirit utterly broken".
I wish there were more books like The pianist, written by the victims from all sides of the war fronts. Unfortunately the Iron Curtain probably prevented any stories of the victims of Stalin's terror emerging until recently. Hopefully Imbi Paju's (Estonian) books are translated to english some day.
@chapinwrestler130 it was too late to save the captain. You also must remember that the Russians were VERY angry at the Germans and killed millions of civilians (i think) and they didn't think that Nazis should be held trial like they did in the U.S. (if they did they were convicted anyway).
@chapinwrestler130 Maybe because the Russians thought every German was not important. They probably didn't even listened to him, and nobody was there to clear his name.
you certainly wonder why didn`t they make him free.. it`s a wondering of a guy who doesn`t know the reality of the lands of the east side of iron curtain..... the russian are even worse in treating humans life.... the only difference between them and the germans is that the germans are better organised and accurate..... in extermination
@chapinwrestler130 Well Szpilman tried during years, but the sowiets didnt free him and he perished there even though he saved more jews then just Szpilman.
The ppl who stayed in Warsaw after Uprising 1944 are called "warszawscy robinsonowie" - "Warsaw Robinsons" in PoleLand. It is about 100 persons, Jews from different countries, polish AK soldiers who refused to be imprison in PoW camp, few civilians and Szpilman among them but I don't know if he knew he wasn't alone.
