That's the plasma beam, which you can't use it until you get your varia suit near the end of the game.

actually that is wrong you get three unknown items and unlock them when you lose your suit and have to do a stealthy mission from the space pirates to go to the ancient place where you fight something to get all your stuff back and the other three items to unlock which are plasma beam, space jump, and the gravity suit but im thinking you probably didnt mean to say varia suit
