Both Endings Are Equally Great. Owen is the Guardian Angel of the Devil. It was an alternate understanding of the metaphisical forces behind the actions and deeds done by and to from those two. The savior becomes the reaper. Oliver is brilliant and the whole film process took on a life of its own and as such ended up as a movie that plain and simple just had to be made.
i always wondered what happened with owen after the prison riot.he was a rather mysterious(but certainly dark) character, but that made him interesting.i like this ending almost more than the original, atleast this seems more realistic.every heinous, violent, evil act they've ever done comes back on them with two shotgun blasts.what goes around comes around, that saying always stands true.
At 3:07 you can see it in his eyes..... while Mickey & Mallory are just a couple of rabid sociopaths... Owen is a genuine psychopath, its like doctor Lecter doing some freak mental games with them two.... To him they´re just his prey... this is fuckin amazing this ending is a lot lot better than the original i dunno why some people bitch at this.
Maybe they should've taken Owen's "coming, as I do, from the fire and all" a little more seriously. It's the Demon! Like it was written in the Stone script - that Mickey recognizes the Demon in Owen and that's why he is smiling. They're actually let go of the Demon even though they die. They don't want him coming with them so he provokes them but Mickey manages to tell Mallory no to kill Owen. Instead they're let go and free when they made the chloice to stop killing even if that meant death.
This ending would have worked well with the other courtroom deleted scene where Ashley Judd is stabbed to death with a pencil because it shows that Mickey & Mallory were always going to be brutal sickos that were destined to die at the hands of the next brutal sicko.
@AussieGossie The courtroom scene shows that after a time when they've already "repented" and the ending in the original film shows us that with their family life
Lol its a pitty that this movie "Influenced " the minds of the stupid fucks sickos of the columbine high school masacre. Seems the two retardeds are exactly the fucking satire that this same film was trying to critizice. Freakin dumb idiots didnt even get what the film was really about. They just liked the idea of shooting cops and being famous.(They indeed had a shooting with the cops). It pisses me off the stupid sickos suicided. They deserved to be tortured or hitten by an angry mob -.-
And infact, shouldn't Owen had waited a bit to tease and scare the shit out of Mallory before showing her death. As what Dresden1065 said better than me about her cowardice.
Joker or Patrick Bateman hell even Anton Chigurh (I can't remember the exact spelling)should have killed them both, yet I love this film and have only honestly got the DVD and seen this to comment. Besides that the latter two are probably the most disturbing fictional psycopaths I can think of, yet the first two are my favourite.
Hell imagine if they crossed paths with Michael Douglas from Falling Down for good measure of imagination.
@TRISTAN029 Ha! Out of all the films I haven't even seen Taxi Driver yet but it is in my top 20 films I want to see. Hell I've only just for the first time now watched Dracula, Wall-E and fucking Independence Day and I also want to make that music/ movie video thingy with this film along Amon Amarth. I'm not entierly sure how but it's going to need quite alot of fucking planning and most of all editing, of course.
After reading these comments, obviously only a few understood the message. To me there is a lot of ways to percieve things. I think that "you" can be conformed to this world, or transform to spit in it's face, and move on. "Do you believe in fate sheoples."
I wished this would have been the ending, except for two things:
A) They should have given some sort of background on Owen (why was in prison) and given him a few more lines during the prison riot.
B) When he raises his shotgun on Mickey, I hate that quick reaction of Mickey and then Owen in a close-up. They should have shown him just lifting the shotgun, keep on that shot for a second of two more, then show the grin on Mickey's face (and probably keep on that shot a second more.)
This ending doesnt really sit with the style of film. You'd be expecting someone to kill them, therefore having them escape and live their lives was cool.
Plus, they werent really the bad people, society made them that way. Sometimes people piss you of so much, you just snap, then boom....
@6VampireHeart6 I dont know if you can say all she said was wait...
She said Wait, with a breathy kinda voice, kinda shaky, or confused. And I dont know if I Believe Mickey is a mad man because he didnt react, he just kinda looked like a retard...
Great ending. I know If Mickey and Mallory were alive and in my living room today, they would not spare me, nor my mom, they would probably end up killing one of our cats and leaving the other to tell the tale!
@Dresden1065 I have to disagree with you about Mallory being a coward. If you look closely there really isn't much fear in either her face or her voice. It seemed like she was more shocked and trying to talk her way out of it.
Well if you've read the revised Oliver Stone script, not the original Tarantino one then this is the way it was supposed to end. The focus upon "the demon" got lost and was much more clear in the Stone script's ending. Demon/Guardian Angel: "As I do comin' from the fire and all". The demon will never let Mickey & Mallory go. The regular ending is not about them getting away with their crimes but being free of the demon - it's a happy ending actually, most viewers might miss this.
Now that's an ending right here people wants to look at. I have to agree with some or few other people here that this really should have been the real ending here.
This movie is quite clever. Satire on how the media and the general populous romanticizes and sensationalizes death. Its funny cause amongst all the killing, in the end, the most sane ones in the movie are the couple;they're just purely killing, murdering.. whereas everyone else is "killing for a selfish purpose"
People who are influenced by movies like this, didnt' get the satire or the meaning of how strong media manipulation can really get. We do glorify and 'sickly' adore psycho killas
Good alternate ending. 4:19 to 4:29. Mickey and Mal were killed by their own species. No mercy or anything. There was no bargaining or hesitation. Just boom, click click and boom. That's it. Done deal. Would serve them right. They got cocky, figured they could shoot their mouths off and their guns off to anyone they so chose. Now the tables were turned as they crossed the wrong man. Good one.
@KindredGemFilms1998 I heartily agree. I understand where the film comes from, how it wants the viewer to sympathize w/ Mickey and Malory, because of their situation and the crazy world we live in. But, I could never connect with these two, so I feel given their chosen path that in the end this was the more fitting ending for our duo. Think about it, in terms of evolution like Mickey says, in the animal kingdom there's always a bigger predator around the corner. Brilliant ending!

They aren't heroes, and sick minds like your's idolizing what they did is very destructive to society.
The movie can't be blamed either. Anyone with half a brain would know that this is simple entertainment. They used it as an excuse, a scapegoat. Eric was a psychopath and Dylan was his depressive puppet. Although I feel very bad for them and their victims, what they did was still wrong.
However I do respect the buzz they caused, if nothing else, on some level. They won. God help us all.
Not really badass, because they just rushed in and shot everyone, over half of their targets weren't even killed. Hell, their bombs didn't even go off properly.
Pretty piss-poor role models, if you're twisted enough to consider murderers to be such that is.
I enjoyed that ending alot more then the one in the film. Not that the one in the film was bad though. I can see there being problems with it fitting in the the pace of the movie, maybe if they had re-wrote / re-shot it a bit it couldve fit in better.
This ending is KILLER! What where the producers thinking when they cut it out of the film! Oh yeah, I remember reading about why! They didn't want the main characters to be killed off because they had a sequel planned.....I loved Natural Born Killers 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey, I wasn't implying that this movie caused anyone to go kill anyone...I just meant to say that if they went with this karmic ending, it might change people's perception of the movie in the sense that people wouldn't be able to say "hey, they got away with it!".
That was satisfying. And it does tie up the loose end of whatever the hell happens to Owen. But I suppose that it harms the flow of the film having this long of a scene after the dramatic climax earlier. Still, I wonder if the ending couldn't have been retooled a bit more to include this as well.
I bet the fact that he's in the beginning with the newspaper saying 666 and saying 'coming as I do from the fire & all' represents him being a devil in disguise as their guardian angel, like as if the demons (as the navajo man they killed called them) disappointed the devil and the devil punished them as a result for their cockiness
That ending was stupid and only there to placate the bleeding heart assholes that can't allow for the bad guy to win, even in a fictional movie.

Mickey was a genuine madman, and Mallory was a coward. Mallory showed just as much fear in her last moments as her countless victims did to her.
