It never ceases to amaze me the blatant and shameless ignorance that mormons display concerning their own church. You still have members today that don't know about the church's horrendously racist history, nor about the embarrassing and verified lie from Joseph Smith that is the Book of Abraham. Many even think there is archaeological evidence that supports the book of mormon.
Their shameless ignorance aside, the naivety is kind of adorable if you think about it.
This was genius. Just brilliant. I'd never actually watch this show, but you put it together with the audio track really well. My favorite part was the dimmer switch line. I really like how Trey and Matt have been gleefully showining the U.S. that religion is being shown the door. Like it or not, we are becoming less and less religious in this country. Most religious people I know are nowhere as strong in their beliefs(affecting actions and decisions) as their parents or grandparents. It's nice.
As a Jew, I find this VERY offensive. I am not defending Mormons or the Mormon religion, simply pointing out that this sort of attack is an example of unfair, stereotyping and borderline-racist. What would the reaction be if somebody who didn't like Jews put up a song with colorful ponies singing about all the stereotyipcal jewish "behaviors" that they find repulsive, like stinginess, greed, love of money, etc.?
Racism is racism, whether you are attacking a popular or unpopular groupd.
Also, I'm not even sure what stereotypes you're referring to. The song could equally apply to a wide spectrum of highly conservative fundamentalist christian sects. Does anyone actually know any Mormon stereotypes? I'd say the magic underwear thing but that's part of dogma, like saying that Catholics believe in transubstantiation is a stereotype.
@scienceandponies And as someone who grew up in a church derived from LDS teachings I find this ridiculously funny. Though that may because of some subtle in jokes.
@desert4427 I don't think it was meant to be offensive - anything written by Matt and Trey should be taken with a grain of salt, otherwise you'll get hurt. The MLP franchise has exploded, and it's natural to expect anything popular to be paired up with it.
I'm not trying to give you a hard time - I'm trying to help.
2. It reminds me that antisemitism needs to decide whether it wants to be racism or regular religious discrimination. I hate the vagueness of "Jew" referring to either a member of the religion of Judaism, or the someone from a semitic ethnic group. Then there's the people who are non-believing descendents of converts who still consider themselves to be "culturally Jewish"..
@desert4427 "if somebody who didn't like Jews put up a song with colorful ponies singing about all the stereotyipcal jewish "behaviors" that they find repulsive, like stinginess, greed, love of money, etc.?"
You said it, not us.
You seem to have a fundamental misunderstanding of the word "racist". The religion you CHOOSE to be a part of has NOTHING to do with race, and is not immune to criticism by any stretch of the imagination. If someone believes in something stupid, I will point it out.
I'm Christian, and I approve this message. I do this all the time. I really hope my High School goes to see this so I can go. I want to see this show SOOO BADLY!
My mind is blown. An AMV of a show created by one of the best newer animators, with music written by other effing awesome people in the animation field.
Yes? I'm not really sure how it would not be a joke. A good rule of thumb, if it is in the form of a musical number, then it is probably a joke. Is it a joke at someone's expense? Certainly.
@scienceandponies well i mean last thing i thoght was a joke i got yelled at by a bunch of cristians O.O i can never be to careful anymore.... anyway its a joke, and i like it and all that stuff.
@TeamHitachiin People make jokes about everything. Especially on the Internet. If you don't like it, there are literally THOUSANDS of websites out there that support YOUR point of view. Nobody is forcing you to browse YouTube, or to watch videos you don't like. So if you don't like this video, just take your computer and...
@scienceandponies Actually, Trey Parker was raised Catholic and Matt Stone was raised Jewish. His Mom is Jewish as well, which according to some people, makes him ethnically Jewish. Stan is slightly based on Trey and Kyle is slightly based on Matt.
heh while I may have not paired the two together, well done video! :D I've been meaning to see/listen to this new show but haven't gotten around to it, tis amusing!
Nothing in this song is foreign to the mormon mentality. I am an ex-Mormon and my mother absolutely despises anything to do with homosexuality. She was also abused as a child. Want to know how she deals with it?
@Isoscelescube I'm sorry that your mom was abused as a child, that is not how a disciple of Christ, as we say we are should act. Personally I feel that anyone who could be abusive is a horrible person and should be legally banned not to have children
@scienceandponies I understand it is a satire, I'm not offended I was merely saying that the play does in fact bother me with it's misrepresentation of my religion. I was actually trying to point out what we actually don't act like that. That's what hurts me, also the fact that near the time the religion was founded one misunderstanding led to the Haun's Mill Massacre in Missouri
@scienceandponies I find it funny that they are complaining to you instead of the creators of this... but I'm pretty sure their reaction to it would of been worse XD
@3473firewolf The people who wrote this play are Trey Parker and Matt Stone of South Park fame. If you ever saw the movie they were also in called Orgazmo, they basically took the Mormon characters in that movie and made a play about it.
@3473firewolf ok, but seriously, the song doesn't even say that beating your wife and drinking are Mormon culture. That was something that happened to one character singing. The Mormon culture part is taking those moments and dealing with it by just turning off your emotions. If you know the play at all, it does take what Mormons and other Christian organizations do and send missionaries out into the world. continued in next reply......
Respond to this video... ... from continued.... This play is about 2 Mormons who lived a very sheltered life and doesn't know anything outside of their mormon world. So they get sent off to Africa to a village, and they have to adjust and try to fit in to a secular world. The humor in it does not intend to make jokes solely at the Mormon's expense. The humor and story is about the sheltered character's social ineptitude.
@AidenIsLove Alright I wasn't quite aware of that, thank you for the clarification. I agree that sometimes we can be far too sheltered at the same time you do not need to have a song in there that translates to F*** you God
@3473firewolf, I really think that you should tolerate and not take this to heart. Everyone knows that this isn't really how the Mormon church functions :)
I'm Catholic, and I catch a lot of heck about pedophilia and other horrible stereotypes. It's all in good fun, and though it can be offensive you just have to realize that it makes other people happy. I can assure you that scienceandponies meant no offense to the Mormon community.
Well, while giving offense wasn't my objective when putting it together, I don't NOT mean to offend. I'm strongly anti-religious, so offending anyone with sensibilities sensitive enough to be offended by anything I happen to do is a nice bonus.
You do know that being anti-religious doesn't mean you have to explicitly hate every religious person right? I can have fundamental moral objections to religion and the concept of faith in general and still realize that there are often people who are good despite their religious beliefs. As long as they don't try to legislate their beliefs into law for everyone else I'll tolerate the hell out of them. It'd be nice if the non-religious could get some love and tolerance.
Also, to clarify my original post in case there was any confusion, I don't intentionally go out and seek to offend people. I just don't mind if I do so accidentally.
