hey i wonder how many knebworth concerts are?? and which one is this?? because its different from the one i have on my led zeppelin dvd (2003) if anyone knows please let me know thanx
@chalitin11 Originally there was only to be one show but the demand for tickets was so great they added a second weekend. As we'd ordered multiple tickets in case we couldn't all get some we actually managed to go to both shows :-)
if everyone would read LZ When Giants Walked the Earth...jonesys GX-1, Pageys strat, their stage wardrobe, Gs demand for a million pounds for two shows in K worth are all revealed. this show had 110K tx sold...and only 40K came for part two (cold rainy day). this show's entire first set was plagued by shit sound mix. so anything from first set sounds like 4 high school kids squealing their way through LZ covers.
Am I the only one bugged by the patches that JPJ is using on the GX-1? Geez, 60,000 dollars (and that was in Carter era money) to get a string synth sound that makes the ARP/Solina String Ensemble sound like the George Szell era Cleveland Orchestra string section in comparison.
I was at this gig and this song was new to me - the middle section sounded beautiful floating towards us over the fields in the summer evening (sloppy playing or not) and I can still feel it now when I hear it now. Pure nostalgia.
@nolslifegren That Pagey eh? Was no-one safe? Now Sweet must be added to the list of his victims. Seriously though, I've worked as a music arranger and transcriber and I've checked out Windy City. I like Sweet and it's a good song but personally I'm not hearing the nick, other than the fact that it's a quiet middle section in a rock song. Anyway, 32 years tomoro, I'll sit in the garden with a lager and reminisce, then throw the can and shout 'sit down'. Your turn next week.
Chuck's article wasn't negative, just read the last paragraph. All he's saying is that these guys were so good...that even a pretty average perfomance by zep on the downside of their peak, is still better than anybody can even think about doing today.
Chuck Klosterman's sharp negative critical write up on this concert and Led Zeppelin '79 was totally uncalled. The mass public hate of Zep by '79 was totally uncalled for. The Clash was trashing Zep in '79. Other group's were trashing Zep in '79. Where the fuck in those groups music today. Where are the fucktard mass public of '79's music today? You dont hear their music anymore today but you still hear Led Zeppelin's music from 1979 today.
@PBANDSNOW The Clash? No, of course they're not, when do you hear of them now?. For years they were one of the most written about bands ever by music journalists and the most talked about by people with access to the media. So for a while a lot of sheep bought their records. Led Zep, on the other hand, with no media support even in the pre-punk days, oustold them throughout even their 'big' period, let alone now, when they're forgotten, with no discernible influence on other bands. Fuck'em.
The mystique around Led Zeppelin totally overlooks the fact that if you saw them 3 times, one show would be brilliant and the other two probably a shambles for one reason or another. Like going to see Deep Purple was always a crapshoot depending on what mood Blackmore was in, going to a Zeppeling gig you had to have faith that they wouldn't just mail it in or that Plant would actually go for the high notes or the sound would be crappy etc, etc
I started playing gutar because of them. I wrote and recorded an original song and posted it on youtube today. If you want to hear how Led Zeppelin-inspired music sounds 2010 style click on wisztrock. I think you'll like it.
@JR28951 I knew that, eventually, someone would nail me on that, but, being just a piano player, myself, I have to tell you that I call all guitars "Les Pauls" simply because I love that name... to me a Fender belongs on the front of a car... lol!!!
@swgurrl are you high? the timpani is actually much harder then most people can understand. A timpani is a string tuned drum that changes depending on movement of the foot pedal. Grip and where you strike also changes tone, so a lot of people can't play them right.
@ozzyhead73 Lol I know right! Its a 1964 Fender Stratocaster (Lake Placid Blue) and first used 1979. Used on-stage for Over The Hills And Far Away on some dates at Earls Court and here in, In The Evening at Knebworth
i was a G,I. stationed in germany 79-81-this was OLYMPIC HALL in MUNICH -im JON HENERY BONHAM-I WAS also able to go see them in knebworth 79-the GREATsitting here with my ticket stub and i still get fricken goose bumps -last hurray for EST SHOW BAND OF ALL TIME--
@dredhead117 Nope, it's the timpanis in the beginning of the song. You can hear them in the studio version too. But he does use the timpanis in his solos.
My world got rocked in August of 1979. This album was released just as I started my junior year at a new school and In Through the Out Door takes me back to that time in a powerful way. This song in particular was my favorite, although All My Love ranks a close second. Thanks for the great association and memories, LZ.
Not that it's a bad song, but I never really thought "Stairway" was worth all the hype. This is my favorite hard rock song, of all time. Led Zeppelin and Van Halen are my two favorite bands.
@mario64guy Page mainly used a Strat on Houses of the Holy, Physical Graffiti, and In Through the Out Door, and the only reason he stopped using it is because he gave his favorite Strat to John Paul Jones after Zeppelin broke up.
@BleachTW No he actually only used a Les Paul on Presence, Guitar World did an article where they interviewed him and he told them all the guitars and amps he used on every Zeppelin album
It wouldnt have been right for Zep to continue without Bonham. They did the right thing. My favorite Zep song too!!! Even now, I am not in favor of a Zep reunion with Jason. Robert, Page and JPJ are all old, and would just do an injustice to their legacy.
@resqfireman yeah but its really awesome the jason wants to carry on for his dad...i would do the same if bonham were my father...i would keep him alive with my drums and let the name live on!
its so wierd to see page playing a BLUE FENDER STRAT!!!!!!! just doesnt seem right!!!! but sounds so GOOD!!!!! yeah page definitely could be sloppy but what matters is the outcome on the album!!!!!!! theres a lot of great bands that sound like absolute S@$# live!!!! i saw him with THE BLACK CROWES and he friggin sounded great!!!!!!!
They sounded great to me. Jimmy was with smack from about 76 to 84, so yeah, you're watching an addict play guitar, and I'd bet there was plenty of coke around for him, too. I;m not suggesting the next fool who likes to play music go out and try this, but Jimmy was driven by "the spirit" so to speak, and the spirit pulled him through. Bonzo and Jimmy were the sub-clique that used heavily and showed up late for rehearsals and Robert and John Paul who were focusing on their professionalism.
you can't deny Led Zeppelin's greatness over the years, but this is a sad performance. page is so strung out he can't play the notes or move. and plant just looks uncomfortable not his usual almost cocky stature.
@JubeProductions FUCK YOU HES AWESOME!!!!! DRUGS DONT HURT JIMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMY... no but really unless he shot up before the show his drug addiction shouldnt affect his playing.
@Xanth016 i'm not trying to offend you or anyone, or put jimmy down. i know jimmy page is one of the best guitarists there was. unfortunately every great performer has some bad performaces and this was one of them. obviously you must not be very well educated on drug abuse because if so you would know that being an addict effects everything in your life even if you are not "high" at the time. he is clearly strung out on heroin at this point in his life and it affected his ability to perform.
I think JPJ and Bohnham just get on with it and play off each other, page is in no condition to really react play off them, bonham is flawless as ever, plant doesn't look that interested
Anyone critising this performance should watch the august 4th show apposed to this august 12th, it is much better and the In the evening performane is just superb.
People sayin Jimmy makes a lot of mistakes live, so did , and do, most bands, and one reason he makes mistakes here is cause he's using a strat, and he's used to a les paul.
Yes I agree, Pagey is just gone on the H, and playing very badly , I cringe at his attempts to play lead guitar in tune here.He was always better in the studio anyway.
at 5.33 Page officially loses the plot on the guitar when the simple E D A chord progression can't be that hard to remember ...;-P Smack, it is one way to lose weight !!
The second gig was brilliant - never mind that they weren't playing to studio standard - it was a long hot day and we'd all had to run around a lot just so's we didn't accidentally listen to Chas & Dave ! (they were seriously uncool then - showing my age now I was a little (just a little!) upset when they broke up earlier this year!)
In the evening when the day is done he needs his woman, but the girl don't come! Well he should stop by my house LOL! mmm mmm mmm I need his love, love Robert Plant sooo much, all that long hair and that voice drives me wild! oooo babe I need his love...............one of the sexiest men on this earth! Just got to ,just got to have love ♥ ♥ So don't you stop! ♥♥

JPJ's bass pedals need to be turned up or something, it sounds really empty
Martiluk1 1 year ago
I think JPJ and Bohnham just get on with it and play off each other, page is in no condition to really react play off them, bonham is flawless as ever, plant doesn't look that interested

Maybe a bit out of tune, but they sound better than many bands that are tuned up..... Love ZEP!

Anyone critising this performance should watch the august 4th show apposed to this august 12th, it is much better and the In the evening performane is just superb.
It is also included on the 2003 Led Zeppelin dvd.

Jimmy makes too many mistakes in live

The second gig was brilliant - never mind that they weren't playing to studio standard - it was a long hot day and we'd all had to run around a lot just so's we didn't accidentally listen to Chas & Dave ! (they were seriously uncool then - showing my age now I was a little (just a little!) upset when they broke up earlier this year!)
