Listen people, Wilco is a GREAT rock band, but you start throwing wonderful stuff like this into their music and they'll start losing audience. Sad fact of life - not a lot of folks are into great edgy music like this.
Tweedy isn't a fool, and neither are these two - it's a great cash source in a not horrible environment that lets two sonic scientists such as these have the resources to do whatever they want, and they can up the bar within Wilco in their sleep. Everybody wins.
I agree entirely... Actually I'd like a bit more experimentalist sounds in Wilco... The last couple albums have been a bit more direct than I would like for a band with such immense musical talent.
For anyone curious, most of the music Glenn Kotche is playing on drums after a couple of minutes is on his solo album "Mobile". A lot of tribal drumming influences. If you liked this video you'll probably like the CD.
Because Kotche is such the skilled drummer that he understands dynamics and balance...the drumming has to be appropriate for the vibe of the song. He puts his ego outside the music, and that allows him to play exactly what is needed, regardless of how exciting or boring it may be.
I wouldn't say it's BORING; I'd say that it's easily ignorable and indifferent. And I don't think Wilco should have a Copeland or a Moon at the drums, but some extra energy in the percussion could have put some songs ("Monday", "Can't Stand It", a few others) in an even greater realm.
fucking brilliant. takes me away to magical places. Nels Cline - high priest at the church of the sonic guitar. this Glenn Kotche cat ain't bad either.
Nels can do both, and I totally respect that. But you're absolutely right, there's a line that needs to be drawn in the sand. There are too many "Steve Vais" in the world as it is. For the love of fucking GOD, someone please throw a pie in the collective face of the brain dead shred fucks who inhabit this universe!
Playing with effects is not hard. Learning theory takes a lot more work. I'd trade all my effects for some real musicianship. These guys, however, have both.
Maybe take a look at Chris Cutler or Tony Oxley's drumming on youtube.

This video leads to the immediate question: why the hell can't we hear any of this kickass Kotche drumming on any Wilco studio stuff?

Kotche joined Wilco after those songs had been recorded and released. Watch live versions of them and see the energy he interjects.

Because it's subtle and in the pocket and Glenn always says that the most important thing he plays to is Jeff's lyrics.
