People always remember the Radio Ga Ga type stuff .. or Bohemien Rhapsody and forget what wonderfull stuff these guys produced on their first few albums !! .. Being a 50 year old, old git now ,the first album I ever got was Sheer Heart Attack way back when I was 14 and remember thinking 'what the fuk is this???' ... but after listening a few times I saw the genious in it all .. These guys were a big part of my life for many years ..Sadly missed Mr Mercury!!
Freddie's voice was just amazing always, but particularly during this period. Virtually unknown at the time of this performance, you can see that Freddie, Brian, Roger and John knew from the beginning what they were, what they wanted to be and where they wanted to go. I didn't get to see them for the first time until 1977 when they already ruled the world. The people at the Rainbow in 1974 were experiencing something VERY SPECIAL indeed.
great video!!! beautiful music. very raw queen. love it!!! freddie's piano, oh man! the whole band, totally wonderful. love it. thanks innuendo for posting this video.
I wish I could see them. I'm born in 1993 and I love Queen. But did Queen perform in 1983? I thought they took a break after 1982 because they needed some time of and time to work because of Hot Space. Then they got back in 1984, 1985 and 1986. So are you sure it was 1983? I wish I could see Freddie's magic, Brian's goddess, John's sharm and Roger's coolness. They are the only band where all members were geniouses and the best band to ever live at this world! I wish I could see them live...
I liked the piano on this song. The guitar solo of the studio version have other guitar filling the song, but here we have Freddie´s piano supporting instead of another guitar... I think this song (one of my favorites) worked beautifully here.
I love this song! The album version is great, but this is even better with the added piano in the middle part. It makes it sound even more angelic and ethereal. Freddie was a genius on the piano and his singing is filled with SO much passion, it makes me sad to think he died SO young. Why do all the amazing people have to die too soon?
Brian May once said Freddie didn't consider himself much of a pianist... Cannot understand why because Freddie plays beautifully on this and so many other Queen songs.
Brian said himself that Freddie deprecated very much his own piano playing, so much that he played less and less in the later years. In the early shows he played a lot of piano, in the 1986 tour he played only in Bohemian Rhapsody, We Are The Champions and songs where the piano was really necessary.
I agree, he's actually my favorite pianist ever. I enjoy his piano more than Chopin or Franz Lizt or Beethoven or Mozart. Freddie as a composer is easily on par with those guys easily.
I had this audio on bootleg long before videos ever came out. I'm glad to see the video posted. Best version ever! My all time favorite. Thanks for sharing.
one of my favorite songs, love this song..the first years after I started listen to Queen the QueenII album was played just about every evening till I fell asleep! this version is great, with the piano and guitar in the middle..
Inroducing "An Evening With Queen, 1974-1976" 2-DVD set. Features Live at the Rainbow,(direct transfer from Box of Trix - outstanding broadcast live video quality) Live at Hyde Park (without the time code and better audio) and Hammersmith Odeon 1975, plus many other rare Queen vids from the 70s. Msg me for details. Now you can own these concerts too, too without wasting your valuable time trying to find these rare treats.
I saw Queen in concert in Harrisburg, PA when they came out with their first LP ('73 or '74). They were the headliner along with Mott the Hoople and Aerosmith. Queen's performance blew the other two bands away. Aerosmith was a little known band at the time. I don't recall hearing this particular song before, but after I played it, I not only loved it, but I saved it to my favorites. Queen Rocks!!
Between the melody, Freddie's voice, the melody, Brian's guitar, the melody, the arrangement/orchestration of the different parts, the melody, and the melody again, this song is so beautiful it HURTS!
Oh, Freddie's voice was so beautiful in 1974 - even live! It's a pity he didn't sound so good later. The song is beautiful, too - I love how musically focused as a band they were back then, with Freddie's piano blending so well with Brian's guitar.
I absolutely love this song! Queen 2 is my fav. queen album along with sheer heart attack. They were great in those days, but News of the World and Jazz i can't stand listening to, and Day at the races is to acoustic-y

This is just magical. This is MUSIC, not the crap put out today. Muse is the only British band today putting out real music like this.
