my dad helped in fighting to get this case to the courts, and it's closed for 70 years, my dad died in march of 2010 never knowing what happened to his son, my brother, my dad basically grieved himself to death.
for 26 years I have missed my brother who was on this flight and only way I can keep him alive is my memories and in my heart, I never had the chance to tell him that I love him or give him another hug
@DestinyOFire I'm sorry Des ... but at least he was with his pArTy rebel friends, and he did more than most do for the country ... so he will stand as a fine example there is no doubt ... "The BEST thing you can do, Is to be the BEST influence that you can on others"
Sad video to see many US servicemen died. I believe the ice and weight theory a lot more. Even a thin sheet of ice can cause significant air flow disruption. Since the ice would more likely have deviations to the wings' shape, this would require a lot more speed in order for it to stay afloat. Unfortunately, the two sided investigation didn't discover too much with thin-layer icing. RIP of the servicemen and the flight crew of APW 1285.
There was ZERO evidence to suggest it was a bomb - no debris before the crash site, no explosive residue. The fact that some passengers had soot in their lungs just means they died in the fire, not on impact. All this makes me think there must've been pressure from the US to conclude it was a bomb, maybe to get more anti-terrorist funding for the CIA or some similar political reason. As a result, it delayed the understanding of how dangerous even a thin layer of ice can be, endangering others.
seems like simulator testing proved the Weight + Ice Theory convincingly. How did the dissenters argue past scientific fact and advace their sensationalist theory of terrorism? Those dissenters helped allow the Dryden crash to take place 4 years later.
I do encourage the theory of it possibly being a terrorist bomb, however, with other bombings and such on and such forth, you find fragments of bombs, like in the Lockerbie disaster, they recovered circuit boards from the bombs timer, and similar pieces of evidence were found on the Air India 747 that was bombed off the Southern coast of Ireland. They theory of a terrorist attack has its merits, however I think you can 90% say that this accident was caused by an ice build up.
Another reason the terrorism claim doesn't hold water is that the plane flew from Cairo to Europe, then to Canada, and then crashed. Typically, terrorists would use a bomb that responded to a sizable reduction in air pressure, so it would blow up after the plane reached 10,000 feet or more. The most likely place for the bomb to be planted would be Cairo, so it should have blown then. They would have had to use a combination timer/atmospheric trigger. Pretty complex for them to pull off.
Where did this ice come from? In the hours the plane was at Gander, was there any precipitation? Or did the plane pick-up ice as they came in for landing? Maybe the captain didn't de-ice because there was no reason to de-ice. They should have asked the crews of the two earlier flights why one chose to de-ice and the other didn't.

They should try to reopen the investigation. I'm with the investigators who used sound science to determine the cause of this crash. As an American, I mourn the loss of the fallen, and am deeply grateful for the Canadian efforts. The people who believe this conspiracy theory are just the '9-11 truthers', they want a big cause for a big event and so they are selective about the evidence they cite to support their theory.
When the truth comes out, these crackpots will owe a lot of good people a
these guys on the show who said that ice couldnt have crashed this airliner clearly dont know anything about aviation. as veyron 158 said ,the smallest piece of ice can cause a fatal crash.and based on the investigation and other crashes after this one, it is clear that ice and weight are the culprits
@325im20 if u watch the previous episode of air crash the plane that flew too high there was a mid air stall caused by the planes high angle of attack the engines began to roll back as no air could enter the engines and they lost power, seams like the same thing happend here, they had ice, plane felt slow to respond, with the extra weight and ice which ahs been shown on many occasions to cause an accident even small amounts of it
clearly something transported by the military, that was not on the cargo list, exploded accidentally. the us-government pressured the canadians to keep their mouth shut. some had the guts to speak up and hardly anybody believed them because of the us-media, which is heavily influenced by the government.
no mention of the calculations made by one board member, that all 4 engines had to stop working for such kind of decceleration.
@325im20 Not at all - the "bomb" theory is largely underpinned by eyewitness testimony, which is pretty low-quality evidence in terms of air accident investigation. It also fails the logic test - this was a flight home, why would it be carrying arms?
That guy is wrong. I have seen a cropduster crash and there was a mushroom cloud. It looked like a nuclear bomb, but smaller. The pilot pounded on the inside of the cabin to get out, but it was too hot and we could not get close enough to help him. He dieed from smoke inhalation and fire. These soldiers may have had high levels of CO beause they took a few seconds or minutes to die after impact. Sad.
@lyssaryan77@lyssaryan77 Exactly my thoughts. I don't get why it is so hard to believe that it was ice. It was proven that very little ice could cause serious problems with lift, jet fuel has a tenancy to explode when set ablaze, and that crash looked survivable if there wasn't any fire (at least for many), so who is to day the people didn't survive the crash and then die during the fire?
A simple fact: Rate of climb is determined by the difference between power available and power required, No climb means that the gap between the two was narrowed, most probably power required incremented as result from ice accumulation and hi takeoff weight, so I do not understand why these investigator stick to the bomb theory.
It was also a tragic pity that the investigators' warnings about the dangers of excess weight onboard an aircraft were not taken more notice of. 17 years later this was a major factor in the crash of Midwest Flight 5481 at Charlotte-Douglas airport in Carolina. (Documented in the ACI episode 'Dead Weight').
It's a great pity that cockpit voice recorder did not perform its intended functions. The pilots' conversation would probably have provided clear indisputable proof of which theory was the correct one.
Incidentally there was a further accident three years after Dryden in which lives were lost due to ice on the wings. On 22nd March 1992 USAir flight 405 failed to rise while attempting to take off from LaGuardia Airport in New York, and 27 people paid with their lives.

It was obviously icing.A thin coat of ice can disrupt the airflow and damage the streamline characteristics of an aircraft.

BLAME CANADA...
What a crappy job of investigation, these idiots failed to stick with science and wanted to play the "conspiracy game".
Science doesn't lie, and because they didn't obey the warnings, another plane went down and many more people died.
Good job CASB...I'm glad they were replaced.
