  • Lango is the generic name by which Luo peoples have historically used to refer to most Eastern Nilotic people including the Lotuka (Otuho), Lango of Sudan, Masai, Karamojong etc. The Luo encountered a people in central north Uganda who spoke one of these Lango languages and assimilated them by force or inter-marriage. This Lango tribe adapted the Luo language and lost their original language. They are historically a Luo speaking people but not Luo people

  • @Ugandaarab

WOW! I am a Langi. That's new to me. To my knowledge, the Langi are a sub group of the Luo, just like the Acholi, the Luo in Kenya and Sudan.

  • I might not sympathise with those who rely on language to enjoy the music! This is a enlivening, informative and soothing;Dance-able per excellence. I know the language! There is a substantive connect btw the instrument, the voice and the message. This is basic yet scientific to the core, attracting some part of the bodily system that reacts to the calm of music. A translation of this piece is a potential Grammy award winner, more or so if the millions in USA, Europ and Africa are exposed t th msg!

  • Funny that Lango in Kenyan Luo = Masai

Lango is a Luo group in Uganda

  • I am a Lango boy from Uganda and I understand almost half of what he's saying. Lango is a Luo Sub group in Uganda.

  • to us ugandan luos nyar Lango means a Girl from Lango which is one of the luo tribes in Uganda

  • it means the same Nyar lango in kenyan luo means a girl from Lango. We call Nandis and Maasais Lango

  • moto kama bas......

  • He does sing about his wife who is not even a Luo woman, but a Masai woman from Tanzania. He thought he would have problem with his parents by marrying a masai woman, but his mother was having noy problem, insted she was happy to bring a masai (Lango) woman.

  • I must say that Kenya has got talent and Africa in general. Although I did not understand a thing from the song because of the language barrier, I enjoyed it, neverheless. Oh yeah,I got the last few words like Mke ni tabia or something. I guess the song is about marriage and family. Could someone translate it from Dholuo to English or Kiswahili for that matter? Miye naona kama wimbo huo ni murwa sana. Wewe bwana endelea kutunga nyimbo nyingi kama hizo.

  • polopiach- mimi ooni contradikson kae. inaluwore kod where one comes from in Luoland. In generic context, "jalang'o" refers to all "Plain Nilotes," with "Onjelo Jagot" specifically to Kaleos. Onyi is obviously dengoring nyar Maasai. Coming from Suba, kon ma gidakie kod Maa-speakers, I trust that he is using the term "jalang'o" correctly. Unless Nya/Jasuba moro want to puonjawa further.

  • NYOREMO76, Jolango en, nandi, kipsigis, marakwet and NOT maasai. Maasai en mana maasai. For example, Jomua en ...Maragoli, bukusu, jo wanga etc. Koro an atamra wach ni Jolango onywando nyaka maasai. Mani gi ma dont need to be complicated.

  • Polopiach I will still differ with you. If you are from Oyugis for instance, jamwa includes Kisii's coz those are the non luo speakers neighbouring them, so the terms jalan'go and jamwa depend on where you come from. I used to think otherwise lakini nyoch omiya clarification maler.

  • tingahammer1, there are absolutely no "obvious contradictions in this rendition"! Let me teach you some Luo: jalang'o is the name given to non Luo speakers of Kalenjin and Maasai extraction. To a Janyakach and Jakano, Jalang'o is expressly a Kalenjin while to a Jamigori the same refers to a Maa!

  • Great response. I appreciate your Luo kitgi gi timbegi knowledge base. I concur that Jalango wan go gi luor moloyo mwache moko go.

  • Thanks for this clarification. I also thought there was some contradictions coz to us, Josiaya, a jalang'o is a Kalenjin and not a Maasai. Dholuo be samoro tek depending on which part of Luoland you come from.

  • Tho! Onyango yawa! To kendo weche ma chal mana gi mag Luanda Magere ka ne nyarlang'o orundo ni? Kose ok ing'eyo gima ne ogoyo Luanda Magere piny? Akweri wod nam, kik inwo fup Luanda Magere!

  • I apprecite Onyi Heppy's Nyar Lango song, but there are obvious contradictions in this rendition.

Heppy is reportedly "nyar Lango" i.e. a Kalenjin, but then she's also reportedly a "Maasai"? Unless, it is the obvious case of intermarriage btn the two ethnic communities. In Luo traditions, however, we decide on the tribal affiliation based on the father's ethnicity, not the mother's or both.

    Otherwise, another top-notch song. Amilonyarahero.

  • i compare onyi papa jey with Okatch Biggy ja ujimbe. Onyi Papa will definately take the benga music as the undisputed king and all kisumo will follow him. omera orna moko mag onyi ahero ja luo ma very simple.

  • This is the best video of Onyi papa I have ever heard. "Onyi iwer baba, iwer ndi!." Very traditional and culturally uplifting. Keep it up
