I live in Australia and was always fascinated by the legend that was Fire Island. Unfortunately I never got there. Now I'm 55 and been to New York 4 times but still never to Fire Island. My holidays are always your winters. I will go and maybe be lucky enough to breathe a little history. Thanks for this film clip.
Seems like just yesterday that was my life and now it's 2011 and I'm 57. Looking back it almost seems too good to have ever been true. Was I dreaming? I miss my friends.
Thank you so much for this wonderful film of Cherry Grove in 1976.I was 17 years old at the time.I was introduced to Cherry Grove Labor Day weekend 1980 at the age of 21.I went out there on and off until 1990 during the summer..and now have been going every summer since 2000.I love it there!
i've gone there so much in my mind in writing my story I miss it as if I had been there... maybe I was. Such a wonderful time in gay history. Thank you so much for posting this, is like an opened time capsule into happier times:)
@strangeparty Wow! What a beautiful gay beach on Fire Island back in 1976!-I was only 10 or 11 back then and back then, I was in the closet about being gay.

That was the first summer I visited the Grove. Great memories. And I even caught a glimpse of the Emerald Queen outside the Monster!

To me, the black cat, in hindsight, gives an ominous foreshadowing.

It's sad to think that most of these men are no longer with us.
