  • Gary, I had a moment of epiphany a few hours ago(doesn't happen very often), this song really resonates with that moment :) Magic! :) Tx

  • @fuckoffycus Trish! How are ya? I'm glad it resonates with you. Bring on the epiphanies - I'm sure they happen more than you let on. lol.

    :o)

Hope you're well, and as always, thanks for the awesome support. Have a splendid week, champ.

    :o)

    Gary

  • Had to come back. This is such a beautiful video and song! Well done both of you.... Gary you are a true artist of the highest order. You may be a genius... I think you are... I'll watch a few more of your posts and get back to you.

    :)

Keep doing this stuff, it will take you places I'm sure..

  • lol - I'll save you the trouble. I'm not.

    :o)

I really appreciate your appreciation man. Thank you so much. Enjoy the rest of your week.

    :o)

    Gary

  • lol, Not at all man. You're work is astounding. Thank you for posting it for the world to see. You make it a brighter place. I don't understand "how" you do what you do but I can tell that your heart and soul goes into every one of your videos. You clearly make no arbitrary choices... that alone is so f***ing impressive.

    :)

  • Thank you so much for noticing mate. I love it when someone thinks about the overall piece not just the tech side - everything I learn is to service the art, that's where the emphasis should be but a lot of people seem to get caught up in how it was done. Cheers again.

    :o)

    Gary

  • Pretty good!

  • Cheers, J! This was pretty hard to put together. It's funny I've had more questions from effects guys on how this was done than Robotterfly. It started with the idea of a shadow bird flying away - this was a testing piece, especially using a crappy dv camcorder! lol. Thanks for watching.

    :o)

    G

  • Now that is interesting! I thought you just used simple shapes and just tweened them. :) I'd like to try out After Effects myself in the near future also.

  • Never tweened in my life. That sounds bad. lol

I filmed my shadow on my wall at home, luma keyed it(bloody nightmare with such a pixelated image), created the concrete wall in photoshop and comped in my shadow, then I did the animations and blended them into the composition, then I rendered out the whole thing at HD(no camera moves)to an Xvid file, I buit a simple wall in maya and used the vid as a texture, using a still from the start as a bump map, then I animated the camera in maya. :o)

  • Oh yeah -so then I took the whole maya seq back into After effects and added the colour correction you see when the lights change and the out of focus effects. Then... I took the original song and recorded and added me walking, camera noises, the light switch sound, then found the original takes and lifted our voices from that. The "High five" is from an Open the Door session. Put it all together and you seem to have something that confuses professionals apparently. lol Hope I didn't bore U!

    :o)

  • I thought the thing looked simple. Heck, if you did something that confused professionals, then all of my gold stars go to you. I also didn't realize that the "high five" was from the Open the Door session, Speaking of sessions, I'm probably going to tell one of my actors that he may have to do his lines for my villian over again maybe cause of the virus that I have on my old computer.

  • Apparently so. One question came from an artist who worked comping on Batman, and a dude from an add agency wanted to know about the bird. It's a funny old world. That sucks about the retakes due to a virus! When do we get to see what you're up too?

    :o)

    G

  • Pretty soon. I thought about doing an audio blog talking about Heroes of Action, but since there isn't much of a story and just another action picture, I don't know if I'll do one or not. There will be another animation after that, but I haven't thought of a title yet. I thought about calling it Meltdown cause it going to deal with a dystopic city in the future, but I don't like doing a bunch of buildings, but we'll see what happens.

  • Back to the professionals, I do find it funny how they wanted to know how you did the video. As I was watching the video, it looked like something that anyone could do, aside maybe the bird part cause that was pretty good. Once again, if you confused professionals, then you did your job. :)

  • Damn straight. No one's more surprised than me. Professional is just a word I guess. It just means they make more money than us. It is kinda cool that they asked though - means they know they don't know everything(how could anyone)

    :o)

No offence if you guys are reading this.

    lol.

    :o)

  • I would tween my animations in Flash, check out some of the 2D clips in my CyberRock music video cause about 100% of those 2D animations are tweened. I have done frame by frame animation before on a stick figure and it was for a Independent Study course that I took back in 2004.

  • :D this is so wonderful!

    ^^ it really good!

i like the way u did all the shadows!

  • Thank you very much. Cheers for watching.

    :o)

    G

  • Wow ..Wonderfull, visionary and love the symbolical prompts.. The song itself is also very poignant and powerfull Gary !! xxx

  • Thank you very much, Lee. I'm glad you like it. Cheers for watching.

    :o)

My music vids always start with the song for me. Sometimes I'll get an idea for a video when I'm writing a piece of music, but this one didn't come to until well after. Got there in the end though.

    :o)

    Gary

  • Very nice man! You've got wicked talent! :) Wish I could do the things you do! hehe Hella cool, 5*****s faved!

  • Cheers bro. Than,ks for stopping by.

    :o)

    Gary

  • Just awesome!

  • Thank you!

    :o)

    G

  • 1080 sweet!! how do you do this!

  • Cheers! This video was all done with magic.

    :o)

    Gary

  • The message I need to hear! What a beautiful song and video, executed with charm and creativity. It's so perfect and sweet. I love the concept. You're awesome! :)

  • Hey Caren! Cheers for stopping by and leaving one of your marvellous comments. This was a challenge to put together - I borrowed my works DV camcorder (just a toy really) to film my shadow, because of the very low image quality it was a nightmare to key and lift it from my bedroom wall for the comp - it'd be nice to try it again with an HD camera at some point. Problem solving seems to be a big part of the creative process in the digital medeum. Phew!

    :o)

    Thanks again.

    Gary

  • Beautiful and evocative as always Mr Cat you always know how to pull the heart strings.

This Dirty version sounds great, acoustic guitar and rawish vocals are always a winner, gives more warmth.

  • Cheers mate! Happy new year by the way!

    Hope all is well.

    Thanks for dropping by.

    :o)

    Gary

  • The clarity and crispness of the audio was incredible...nice duet, nice song...awesome work, gary ;-}

  • Rose!!! I'm glad you're alive! I thought something had happened to you. Thank you very much and Happy new year to ya. The audio doesn't sound very good to my ears... maybe it's better quality outside of the UK.

    :o)

    Gary

  • Re-visited..." I have these tears inside, deep inside my head. They wont come out though every day they're fed." Mr. G, your beautiful poem grows before my very eyes to express in the most beautiful way my current state of mind... peace.

  • Why thank you Ms D.

    :o)

I'm very glad you dig it.

    :o)

    :o)

    Gary

  • Nice video alongside the song. 5 stars.

  • Cheers! Thanks for watching.

    :o)

    G

  • Was this a reference to Plato's Cave? If so, I got it! If not....well, then your work is becoming so rich that people are detecting cultural references which don't exist!

Do you start hearing a weird flanging effect when converting your sound files from uncompressed to mp3?

  • Hey man. Only on you tube. I usually record using wav then export two mixes, one mp3 and one wav (for quality). I uploaded this four times encoded in various different ways but each had the same problem regardless of the sample rate or format... strange! Only after I finished it did I realize it fits Plato's Cave like a glove. lol. It wasn't done with that in mind though - I had the concept over a year ago just no song. Have a great Christmas.

    :o)

    Gary

  • amazing lyrics in this song,

If you're afraid of the dark,

Dig a pit and paint its walls with smiles. was the line that really caught and held my attention.the back ground shadows was an ingenious idea and compliments the song.

    endless starz to you both,

Merry Christmas and happy holidays filled with peace and love for 2010

  • What a lovely comment. Thank you very much.

    :o)

    Gary

  • Wow!!! Another amazing song Gary! The artistic shadow on the wall with the cool shadow images is just fantastic along with the song which is just very soothing and relaxing

I also love Ester's voice and I think her voice compliments yours perfectly.

At any rate, this was a wonderful Christmas gift to us all Gary and a lovely way to start my morning hearing this song for the first time.

I hope you have a very Merry Christmas!

  • Thank you mate. As always thanks for the support. It's been great chatting to you this year, I hope you start posting some of your music in 2010! Have a great Christmas.

    :o)

    Gary

  • Yeah I'm going to work on some videos of my music for sure. Your art has really inspired me to take my music to another level. I really need to start getting back into video production. With hopefully a new harddrive for christmas I'll have the proper space to do video editing.

Likewise, it has been a great honor and a great joy talking to you this year. Massive good vibes and karma towards you good Sir.

  • "I should learn to hold my tongue, but

at times it gives my mind a rest.

Slap my mouth and watch it run" :D Loving the lyrics Gary, well done, defo my xmas no.1 hit!!! Beautiful song, Esters voice is so beautiful also. A big thumbs up to you both. Looking forward to the next :) *****

    G

  • Tremendous song. Your voices beautifully complement each other. Good to read that you favoured the more honest, dirtier version of this song. It always pays off to take that approach. Instant fav. Thanks.

    Gary

    Gary

  • sj was here LOL,good work you guy's sj.

  • Thank you.

    :o)

    G

  • Aaaahhh, I feel so much better having taken this in. Such a beautiful piece Gary, both musically and visually perfect. I simply can't get enough of all these things you do. There's no one quite like you mate. I always spot little flaws in people's lyrics, phrasings that don't quite sit right for me but there is never a syllable out of place in your work. Each pluck of those guitar strings is a pluck of my heart strings too. Ester's vocal is absolutely spot on too. Sweetly stunning. *****

  • thank you loopy1 for the send ,sj.

  • Thank you so much man! What a fantastic comment. A copy's in the post. lol

    :o)

Your compliments mean a great deal. I know you really consider what you absorb and appreciate. It's what makes you the terrific musician you are. A thousand thank yous for all the support you've given my work this year. I'm very glad we bumped into each other. Have a holly jolly Christmas.

    :o)

    G

  • @smartbluecat I'm not sure but I think I'm replying to your reply to my comment... yt's introduction of the @ was definitely one of their better ideas. This still means just as much to me as it did almost a year ago Gary. On so many occasions I've had to convince myself that I'm O.K., for all of yt's faults and biases it has at least given us a platform and given me the opportunity to rub shoulders with giants which in turn leads me to the conclusion that maybe, just maybe I am O.K. after all.

  • @loopyone73 Beautifully said, mate. You're no short arse yourself.

    :o)

Trust me you're quite a bit more than OK, bro. Never doubt it.

They say you can judge a man by his mates. If that's true then I'm glad we met and proud to call you "friend."

    Catch you soon, amigo.

    :o)

    Gary

  • Brilliant guys...Happy Xmas to all :))

  • Thanks, Tim! Have a great Christmas.

    :o)

    G

  • a lyrical masterpiece; a chorus-fantasy. such a satsifying tune for those of us who are truly nevaaah ok ;-)

  • You are awesome, you elegant fowl.

    :o)

Thanks for watching, listening and comprehending. Have a lovely week.

    :o)

    Gary

  • To the sweetest little owl,- sending love and stuff like that,- Aunt Jules.x.

  • YOU DID IT.

From snow to snow, a whole year and we're still OK !

Wonderful Gary, Ester has a beautiful voice and a beautiful laugh at the end.

Off to paint another one of your smles on the walls of my pit. :).

    Lots of love JJ.x.

  • Thanks, J! I'll pass on your compliments to her. Thank you so much for the great comment and for finding To Bed this year. That whole time was magical. This has been my "posting music" year and meeting you was a highlight.

    :o)

    Gary

  • I tried so much to share this but I don't seem to be able to do so.

I am iced in with no heat and no water but YEAH still have internet connection, so - I now have the luxury of being able to share one -on-one.

    Making a New Year video.

    Here's to magical times always.

    JJ.x.

  • This is wonderful, Gary.

    Thanks for the heads up.

You consistantly knock my shoes off with these masterful, thoughtful gems. As I become more familiar with your voice, I find it unique and appealing. Enjoyed Ester's contribution immensely. The high-five and laughter, a great ending. Music, lyrics, concept, animations, editing...every detail, thoughtfully placed. I wonder how close to the edge of madness you tread, for you certainly tread at the edge of genius.

  • Bob! Hey man. Thank you so much. I've been trying to get Ester on here for ages (she was the singer in the band and still writes wonderful poetry) - these comments may help. As usual, your words are kind and considered. Re madness - it's a bloody tightrope. Cheers again.

    :o)

    Gary

  • BRAVO Gary!!! That was so good in all aspects! Plus those lyrics are poetic and meaningful and moving! I'm still trying to get where they are leading me but then they bring me in all different directions! It's going right in my favorites! I'm sure this one was alot of work and well worth the effort. Fantastic job bud, you are true talent!

  • Cheers, Pops! I'm very glad you liked it. Thanks so much for stopping by and giving it a listen.

    :o)

    Have a great week.

    Gary

  • Fantastic ..

Have been laying on the couch sick all day, what a wonderful thing to find in my inbox.

    Thanks for the share...

This was very well done, has gone straight to my favorites as i know i will be listening to this a few times.

    Great backing vocals as well

    Thanks again Gary

    Cheers from the West Coast

  • Cheers to you! Thank you for leaving such nice words on my doorstep. Hope you're feeling better soon.

    :o)

    Gary

  • you are more than OK...cool cheers,meg

  • Thank you, Meg. Very good of you to drop by.

    :o)

    Gary

  • What an excellent way to end the year, Gary. Love your lyrics and the whole way you have put this song together. I can tell from the first listen, I will play this song often--as I do with your others. Peace of the Season to ya, Lo

  • Thank you, Lo. This is an odd one lyrically for me. I feel that it has some of the most satisfying lines I've ever written, but not necessarily the purest - they're really a reflection of a mood... bloody words eh? Plato's Cave?

    :o)

Thanks for watching. Have a great day

    Gary

  • thorougly brilliant, Gary!! It's simplicity is its beauty. Fits perfectly in my favorites too!

  • Thanks so much B!

    :o)

    Cheers for swinging by.

    G

  • This one could easily be in a film. Very well done and Ester added a lovely softness to it. Really great. I agree with AVDJ. The hand puppet bird flying away was my favorite as well. Is this part of "Open the Door" or your album? or both?

  • Thanks Jesi,

This isn't anything to do with Open the Door, but, the first line is in the film. That line sums up one of its main themes. It was quite a hard vid to put together without a green screen. The crappy dv camcorder I used made it soooo difficult to lift my shadow from my bedroom wall. A good learning experience though. I always try to do something different with each song so I hopefully keep getting better. That's the plan anyway.

    :o)

    Gary

  • How adorable both of you sound!! (: harmonious melody with such poetic lyrics ! .. and the film! (: .. I think I could make out a pony tail ..? O. o .. j/k. Carpe Diem ! DisforDelight

  • Cheers D!

    :o)

Yeah that's a pony tail alright. Thanks for stopping by.

    :o)

    Gary

  • lovely. Really glad to have come across you. the bird is my favorite.

  • Thanks man. That bird was a bit of a nightmare!

    Cheers for watching.

    :o)
