  • that's a pretty cool looking walkie talkie

  • i think that thing is better than the iphone........

  • Has sound quality ever improved? Ever?

  • I only payed 400 for my 64gb iPhone..

  • To be like todays smartphone, you needed a brickphone, a walkman, a beeper, a portable tv, and a vcr.

  • @yell0wberry you forgot a still camera, every smartphone has one of those.

  • With the phones of the 80's you got your money's worth. Durable enough to actually reach out and touch someone. The phones of today seem to lose something when the wind blows.

  • @MyBayouCity ya if needed you could definitely reach out and brick someone in the face with that Easy Bake oven sized phone

  • Gee, a $600 cell phone. Prices really went down since then!

  • Now I know how to get in touch with Zack Morris.

  • I call it the Zack Morris.

  • Can you hear me now? Can you hear me now? And now? Hold on, my hand is tired. G.0001

  • It was NOT the late 80's. This was around 1995.

  • The irony...an iPhone costs more even though the US dollar was worth more back then.

  • @Snesboy09

    Then it would cost less....

  • Tupac - "they get jealous when they see me with my mobile phone."

  • I think smartphones should be this big, then at least there'd be decent battery life on those piles of crap.

  • I still want a 'Brick' 80s-90s cell phone and rig it into an old ww2 radio, just to make other assholes feel smaller... is better... to help cope Lol.

  • DID anyone else see the Dinosaur Fossil?

  • @patrickpleez No he was just talking. Couldn't see him.

  • A 500 dollar toaster,wow

  • Ten years ago, cellphones has come cheap... Now, iPohones and Droids are back to these prices again! :)

  • I wonder if anyone was ever killed with that type of phone back then... you could literally crack a persons skull with one.

  • It's funny how a apartment was around $300 a month back then and a cellphone was $600+ and now just one bedroom apartments are about $500 a month. i'm paying $560 and nowadays you can get a cellphone for free with two year activation. hell Best Buy was giving away Droid Thunderbolts for Blackfriday with two year Verizon Wireless Activation...!

  • who the hell wants to pay $595 for cancer

  • @sleepymexicans idiots who bought the iphone when it first came out.

  • still cheaper than the iphone

  • Haha, Hot Tub Time Machine. GoodLord, the cost of those Clunkers!!!

  • They only thing that's changed is the size of the phone, the prices are still the same - why do you think you are locked into multi-year contracts? It's to pay off the $600 smart phone you "bought" for $99.

  • $595 for a brick like that? No wonder only the rich people had cell phones in the 80's Today you can buy a cheap prepaid Verizon cellphone(w/camera) for only $15 at Wal*Mart. $15 - $30 - $50 prepaid card sold seperately.

  • no wonder very few people in the 80's had cell phones... lol

  • Could people watch mobile porn on that brick ???

  • @Hunkola lol

  • @Hunkola

LOL No. You couldn't take pics; you couldn't send pics; no text msgs....NADA! The only thing you could do on those old phones was talk. And there was no such thing as, "free minutes, etc." You had to be a freaking brain surgeon to own a cell phone back then. Of course I grew up in a neighborhood where nothing but drug dealers had them. In my day...pagers or "beepers" were popular. Those cost about as much as today's cell phone/bill.

  • Yeah, it's lovely looking back at the time. This brick used to cost 600 bucks when now thin touch screen phones can be as low as 10 bucks or even free, if you sign a contract for your soul. And you CANT impress your friends with "free" D: yet price impressing is apparently the best reason to buy a phone...

  • $595 in the 80's?. Isn't that too much compared to today's?

  • @Axmedkoole that's how much a phone that's less than half the size of this brick and 1000 more features, costs.

  • FYI...$595 in 1985 is the same as $1,252 today. Rich man's toy back then.

  • i bet i can play Angry Birds on that thing

  • @Mrcomputergeek1 yeah you can, you just throw the phone :)

  • Darn it I got ripped off, should have waited 20 years and get the iphone 4.

  • still better than iphone

  • @Hittman305 well, that's been my experience, anyway. so many times at the end of my "landline" days, i'd be in a situation where i'd be expecting a phone call and i knew i couldn't be too far from home because i needed to catch it when it rang. and it reached a point where everyone just naturally assumed i HAD a cell, in those cases. they'd be like "oh, u don't have one?" it's so much more convenient now to be able to come and go as i please and have my phone on me whenever, wherever.

  • wow old commercial those phones sell at garage sales for 25 cents now lol

  • @Hittman305 yeah i was proud for a while too. but eventually the times push you into technology. i'm sure if i'd been this age in the late '80s/early '90s i would've proudly clung to my vinyl too. but that wouldn't work out too well these days, would it? as little as 10 years ago i had various pay phones around town i'd use. all those are gone. it's just too inconvenient these days not to have one. and if you're going to have a cell, then a landline is almost pointless.

  • It's amazing how things are so expensive when they first come out.

I paid $100 for my LG touch screen bar phone, with camera of course. I think just about all phones have a camera now...? I remember when the first camera phones came out, I was like, what else will they be able to put on phones?.

  • Just 595? damn.

Nowadays i can get a phone at 711 for 10 bucks

  • And you people bitch about the Iphone's auto-complete, HA!

  • $595.

  • I love how it was almost the same price as an iPhone 30 years ago :/

  • @xXSherviNXx

Because it was just as impressive 30 years ago as iPhone is now

  • @pufixas iPhone is not exciting

  • @v19d

    Shut up, hater.

  • @pufixas Well they are not

  • Shit, phones now cost up to or over 800 dollars. Even them nasty kids who's parents on welfare and have lice have cell phones.

  • $595 in 1980 is the equivalent of like $3000 today.

  • @BizzMarki Actually $595 in today's dollars is around $1500 according to an online inflation calculator. This commercial is probably from 1989, so it is more like $1000.00.

  • @DrTarpon1974 Yup and Gas was under a $1 a Gallon back then too...!

  • @DrTarpon1974 I think its the same when it comes to gasoline, People complain about the price at the pump, but if you look at what people make now compaired to what they made when gas was 1.00, Its not that much more. when gas was a dollar a gallon, Minimum wage was 2.25 an hr, now Minimum wage is 7.40. it all pans out the same.

  • @Dreambro1 Is that why I havd to sell my car after Katrina?Of course, you complete left out the effects on any number of products affected by fuel costs.

Inflation is caused by a systemic change in the economy, not just one thing. When wages don't rise to meet the increases a vicious cricle of decreased effective income and buying power clamps down on your keyster like an unhappy cockapoo thinking your the IRS.

Source: Dad ran gas stations and Carterr really sucked as a president. BAH!

  • Looks like cell phones never went down in price

  • lol it's like the origonal ps3 price. ONLY 595

  • lol at the end

  • Only $595?! I'm on it.

  • Guess you haven't thought that people years from now will think your so called "awesome" iphone 4 is silly and stupid.

  • How could you impress your friends it cost a lot more.

  • OMG THAT FUN IS WAYYYYYYYYYYYY COOLER THAN ANT IPO D

  • From that to the awesome iPhone 4

  • That thing did'nt look like it was worth $500.00. Ugly big and bulky.

  • @Sheri451

    It was the 80s.

  • @sega31098 I know, I guess someone with money could afford it.

  • It's a must have, drop your iPhone, the price tells you it is better,

So over priced, worth about 5$ now lol

  • they forgot to say it comes with free cancer radiation

  • Its so Huge!

  • does that thing come with apps too? :o

  • thats how much an unlocked iphone is!

  • shit!! so expensive

  • "Portable celllular" Isn't that a little redundant?

  • Still less than an Ipad

  • What began as a toy for a few assholes turned into a "must-have" to many assholes.

  • @cochranexyz The percentage of teens owning mobile phones, some of them rather expensive Android, Blackberry or iPhone models is about 70 something percent approaching 80%. The stuff they type out for status updates, the sneaky Facebook location sharing settings, and the fact that they willingly share phone numbers with an average of 300 other people is scary.

  • @cochranexyz

    lol Kind of like cars

  • @cochranexyz i know. progress is a terrible thing.

  • my grandpa had one of these lol

  • I remember using dixie cups and string....

  • Just imagine the amount of cell phone radiation coming out of that hunk of junk?

  • Looks like the phone that Vic Morrow used in "Combat" the old war show!

  • SHIT!!!! $595 IS ALOT IN THE OLD WEST DAYS IS LIKE BUYING A NEW CAR WELLLLLLLL MAYBE NOT THAT EXAGGERATED WAY BUT YEAH IT WAS ALOT MONEY !!

  • @prokillersniper Caps lock day was two weeks ago...

  • adjusted for inflation that's like 1000 dollars of today's money

  • @prokillersniper

$595 is still alot of money.

And for your information, a new car in 1969 cost over $3000. So no, $595 was not "like buying a new car" in the 80's.

  • doubles as a self defense weapon...like a brick

  • That could not have been in the 80s, I bought one in 1991 that looked older than this one, it was solid grey, similar shape, and it cost me more like $1100, in Ottawa, Canada

  • @gooderguy The copyright at the end says 1989. It is 80's, but most of us were thinking early 80's with that title. You were close, though.

  • Only $595? Wow what a bargain! I'll take two.

  • The moral of this commercial.

    money makes you cooler.

    uuuhm, what?

  • and to think the iPhone only costs $49...

  • Yeah i think it was more fun with no cell phones, laptops and all this sh*it

  • The other big thing back then if you didn't own a car phone was to own a pager, if anyone remembers those.

  • nokia ?

  • I would call that a portable house phone. or evens car phone. which was popular back then. I think a legit lookin cell phone appeared in 1996.

  • For that amount of money its supposed to have wifi and 3G

  • Nowadays it impresses your friends in a negative way by telling them it costs a lot more than $595...

  • $595 is actually really cheap for a cell phone in the 80s. I suppose that price doesn't include the10-pound battery. That's another $5,000.

  • I dont think anyones friends are going to impressed over that shit...

  • The 1989 cell phones really, really sucked and weren't really good unlike the cell phones today. Anyone who was born in the 1980's like me would agree.

  • @narukofan2

    2040:

~Some guy~: The 2011 smartphones really, really sucked and weren't really good unlike the cellphones today.

    *Repeat for infinity*

  • @TheBetaFox Makes me wonder what cellphones will be like 30 years from now.

  • Yes, very portable...

  • I think the $600 cell phone is what drove Highland Appliance to bankruptcy...

  • teenagers nowadays still call their phone stupid

  • Does it have angrybirds?

  • Dailing up brain tumors

  • 1980 materialism, makes our materialism seem awesome.

  • Dang 594? You can buy a smartphone outright for that much.

  • $595?!?!?!? Someone needs to sign a 2 year agreement.

  • screw iPhone, I'm getting this!

  • $595 Geez

  • forget the iphone i am geting that phone .

  • ONLY 595 I KNOW WHAT I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS :p

  • Zack Morris got ripped off!!!

  • @TheBelieverAmen lol...he sure did.

  • what no apps or anything... what do they expect u do with that phone..... make calls??? lol

  • Even then they had the Angry Birds app! The middle segments of the "8888888888" LCD display is launched from left to the right using the # button.

  • 595 i can buy something else for that.

  • i remember when you either were pegged as a yuppie or a drug dealer using these things

  • imagine paying $1000 for cell phone today with no bells and whistles. wow ! We've come a long way with technology but still haven't been back to the moon.

  • Wow,

600 bucks for a phone in those days was a really good price.

  • People, back in those days, i'm sure just about everyone lined up to buy that phone to set them free of their mom's old rotary phone.

and to think i was holding out on buying a droid

  • Thats not portable -.-

  • does it come with a fee waiver for radiation treatments?

  • I will imrpess my iphone friends telling this "thing" costs alot MORE! YAY!

  • JUST $595, thats expensive today and this was in the eighties.

  • @Xinn2000 And that is with a new contract too, if you can believe that! You can't text, e-mail, take pictures with it, or a lot of other things that a BlackBerry or iPhone that cost the same price without a contract.

  • I wonder what angry birds looks like on it

  • they're not even updating to gingerbread liek wtf

  • lol

  • Old phone? Donate it to Libya so they can make bombs.

  • $595 and it isn't even an Iphone lol

  • We're into making fun of consumerism with our "still using" channel. With the pretense that using outdated technology is like drug use that needs to be cured. Because that's the message we get from ads and media. Gotta have the latest iPad, iPhone, etc. We're inviting other youtubers (that's you!) will come and share their usage of "outdated" technology...

  • You know...it's commercials like this that make Ray Kurzweil'z book "The Singularity is Near" seem a hell of alot more plausible. I mean, just look at the ipad2! 2040 is going to be a very very very very interesting time to live...

  • I think $595 would be enough to impress my friends, and empty my savings! Wow!

  • @TasteTheMonochrome lol the first i-phone sold for $800, on chick tried buying 3 or more....

  • @TasteTheMonochrome and that's before we factor in present-day inflation and a down economy! :D

  • @TasteTheMonochrome id buy 2 xperia plays , buy a used laptop a droid 3 for that price

  • @TasteTheMonochrome And how much is an iPhone going for these days?

  • @asphil78 Right, except an iPhone is nearly a computer, and it doesn't look like a bad walkie talkie.

  • @rhtaft Same concept: Empty your wallet to impress your friends.

  • And that's $599 for the PHONE. Calls are extra!

  • dang that shlt cost more that a desktop

  • Damn that's a lot of loot to pat for a cellphone that only makes calls

  • @garyadamsjr It sure is! Especially when you consider that todays cellphones are a fraction of that price, and things like internet, camera, video camera, video games, are standard on today's phones.

Kids of today have no Idea what it was like growing up without all that technology. I was born in '77, the most technology anyone I knew, had growing up, was Atari or original Sega. I got my first pager in '94, when I was 17, and only a few other friends had that! Only the very rich had cellphones

  • Holy crap! No wonder Highland is out of business. Their only customer was Zack Morris.

  • this cellphone cost $595, iphone cost $299, blackberry torch cost $99. instant win for this old cool phone! hahaha

  • who the fuck would pay 595$ for that shit

  • @DanteWhite

You do realize that was the coolest invention back in the late 80's, right? Did you even know this is from the past?

  • @compsciguy obviously and the iphone is the coolest invention now and its not that expensive

  • wow wow i can buy two ihone with that type of money

  • in 20 years people will be LOLing that we were willing to pay $199 for an iphone

  • Its touch?

  • will it blend?

  • It's funny, because you know that twenty or thirty years from now, people are going to be on here making fun of "old" commercials for iPods, iPhones, iPads, and whatnot, because it'll all be obsolete by then, and there'll be something better--we just don't know what that "something" is yet.

  • Yeah and you needed a car battery to operate this thing......LOL
