Correlation does not equal causality. Hugging your children does not necessarily make your kids more empathic. It could be that families that are more empathic, also happen to hug more often. Maybe there's a gene that makes a person more warm and cuddly, and maybe that gene is turned off in some people, making them more cold, mean, and more likely to vote Republican. hehe.
