Jason Suecof, the "Fatass" is a beast. He has produced several bad ass album including playing Lead for The black Dahlia murder on the album Deflorate, he may have it wrong that Mike invented that blast beat, but he certainly perfected it,Suffocation was one of the few bands at the time with a solid sounding blast beat that didnt sound like some 10 year old kid pounding on pans
I do love those blast beats, they do sound quite unique, but it's not like he invented the blast beat or anything, like some people on here said. Awesome drummer though.
@Punjabi192 No morbid angel did not invent the blastbeat. The first band doing it was Napalm Death. And they coined (made up) the term "blastbeat". Morbid Angels Pete Sandoval however made the swivel technique on double bass.
@250bpmshaun I thought i said that. But i didnt know that Pete invented Swivel technique. Plus i knew about Napalm Death and who made it, but thanks for the info. . . agian, lol.
@Punjabi192 well, when i listen to that shit, my ears get fucking pissed off, i dont have to fucking like another band because someone says so. fuck that shit makes me hate the band even more. fuck marbid and napalm.
@50Cal420 Sadface, you wont agree that Morbid Angel invented the death metal blast beat, and plus Napalm Death did do it before, not only that but Terrorizer did it before mike, but of course you knew that. Plus if you were not so stupid, i would actually enjoy arguing with you, but whatever.
@Punjabi192 and you would know?????? how??? you been looking in my asshole??? no sir everything shall be shoved up your anus. you perverted stretched anus obsessing cock wallepor.
holy shit this was a month ago? anyways w/e fuck urself.
@50Cal420 Yes indeed. . . anyway we were blasting arguing. I had my history, Terrorizer created the structured blast beat, not morbid angel(though the drummer was the same). Anyway. I think lub will help if i shoved my dick up your ass, because well frankly 2 feet aint wide enough.
There were people doing blasts b4 Suffocation but listen to "The Covenant" and then "Effigy"=it's a different style of blasting.... MIKE TOO THAT SHIT TO A WHOLE NUTHER, MORE BRUTAL LEVEL!!!
@transilvanianxhunger If you ever heard a record where the snare is played at the same intensity throughout the whole thing, it's been compressed in the studio. Compression basically brings everything up to one volume, no matter how loud or quite it was played during recording.
@MutedChord That I did not know. However I did see Suffo live and I must say he does have a lot of endurance and intensity. But that brings me to the question, how come not all bands do that? I mean there's some groups where the snare just seems to lose a lot of power throughout the song...
@transilvanianxhunger Well some bands prefer not to compress/trigger their recordings as it gives it a more human feel, and this is when different drums will get slightly quieter at faster tempos and when the drummer starts to tire. Some drummers are really accurate with their playing so microphones can be put even closer to where they're playing, giving them more problems.
@CelestialSactuary803 I thought the job he did for the most recent Hate Eternal record was pretty bad, and I didn't really like the one he did for Evisceration Plague either, but yes, Rutan is the shit in general. He's actually also a really good drummer.
@CelestialSactuary803 Well obviously they're a lot slicker sounding than most death metal from the 90s for example, I just thought the guitar tone on both those records was really muddy to the point of it being hard to tell the notes apart. He always gets great drum and bass tones though.
its cool to see someone else that doesnt really prefer the Flying Fingers technique and has taken the time to practise enough to be able to blast really fast using the wrists. I found that same thing out - that the snare sounds too light sometimes when using the FF technique...
Mick Harris first used the blast beat as a proper groove (influenced by seige who did a two hand roll blast beat) and it was also Harris who invented the term "Blast Beat". Pete Sandoval refined the blast beat further on Terrorizer's world downfall LP so the blast beat as its used today originated in Grindcore. When Sandoval joined Morbid Angel (With David Vincent who was also in Terrorizer) he brought the blast beat with him into a death metal format. before that DM was more mid-paced.
@asturel13 Pete blasted on Altars of Madness before World Downfall. World Downfall was released after Altars (he probably blasted with Terrorizer before since he joined Morbid Angel after Terrorizer). Otherwise thumbs-up dude.
Nobody said Mike invented the blast beat, except that fatass behind the mixer. Even Paul Mazurkiewicz from Cannibal Corpse was doing it at the same time. Mike perfected it? Fuck yeah. But created?... A little research, oh studio guy.
He did call him only an innovator at the start of the movie.. Blast beats vary a lot, so many different beats are considered blast beats. Mike Smith's variant is what became known as the most popular "blast beat" now.
what is this nerd talking about? Mike never invented shit! Good drummer, but blast beats (all kinds) come about early 90's. Ive been playing Tank blasts longer than Mike!LOL
@Chewzluvsbooze then he says, "he fucken created that shit, no one was doing that, now SOAD is doing it, he should have put a patent on it"
and while mike smith is a total fuckin badass, he didnt inovate shit, i blasted on the snare with my right hand when i was 14 and had no clue who suffocation was.
he didnt fucken inovate the blast beat, he just took advantage of his right hand being stronger than the left
p.s. im not trying to talk shit on chewzlovesbooze
everyone here is missing the point that Mike invented the SYNCHRONIZED BLAST BEAT TECHNIQUE which means hitting the snare, bass and hi-hat all at the same time
Blasting wasn't always a metal technique, it started in jazz. It moved over in the past 20 or so years (30 now?), so really Gene and Ken are primary pioneers, and Mike is just secondary.
And what the guy is talking about is not just blasting, but rather the technique that mike uses. Something about keeping snare volume the same (I don't know, not a drummer).
Blasting did start a long time ago. Various Artforms use "Blasting" Pop, Gospel, Rock, Jazz, and Metal. Drummers across the World use it Dennis Chambers, Marco Minneman, Dave Weckl, Virgil Donati, etc. It's just that Metal is the one that uses it like a Normal Groove.
You are honestly a fucking idiot then because blast beats were used the first time in heavy music by bands like Siege and Beastie Boys in the early 80's
they're not saying that he invented the blast beat, for fuck sake, just that he pioneered a new way of doing it so that the snare was still audible throughout a blast. meh, who really cares anyway, mike smith is a champion
omg all this arguining to death about who invented the blast beat, far out....its not that important wats important is that mike smith is a beast on drums, watch any live performance of suffocation plus all the dickheads saying hes black and all this, shut a fuck up, it doesnt matter.....SOAD should play some form of armenian folk music then going by ur understanding or jimmy hendrix should of rapped ...morons
dang a black guy playing death metal. that so awesome. most of the black people i know listen to rap of course. and one guy listens to slayer but nothing this heavy. and to see a black guy actually playing as heavy stuff as death metal it blows my mind
I thought the blast beat originated from jazz, which, of course, has been around since long before there was death metal. Though the blast beat as we know it in Death Metal is quite different.
By the way, a friend told me it was the drummer of Anthrax to first play blasts in metal music, though he could be wrong.
Anyway, all the drummers you guys are naming here are pretty awesome, and we should not forget that! :D
That is absolutely true man. The single foot blast beat which is done in this video, originated from jazz. Mike Smith(great drummer) was probably a fish in his dads balls when the blast beat was first done.....
no suffocation did not come in the mid 90's you fuckin dumbass. they wrote human waste (their first ep) in 1989. and came out with effigy in like 91 or 93. know your shit. they were the brutalest band on fucking earth when effigy came out. suffo fucking rules. period.
BLAH BLAH BLAH!!!!! Pete Sandoval was single foot blast beating in the early 80's with Morbid Angel. Listen closely To Buddy Riches solos, He was blast beating in the 70's.
Quite a rarity to see a black guy playing death metal (or any other music genre on the heavy spectrum of music) and on top of that doing it brilliantly. Suffocation is one of those bands I only listened to sporadically. Heard some records and that's about it, never saw a video or got into their biography. Would be fun to see an all-black death metal band playing.
Bull Shit! Man that guy did not create Blast Beat....A lot of late 70's Metal band doing that stuff...That fucking geek white guy is Just kissing Mike Smith ass
Not really, he just sped it up. It's not like no-one ever hit the kick, snare and a cymbal at the same time before, all he did was turn it into a blasting technique and use it in the context of death metal.
suffocation came into the death metal business in the mid 90's, and cannibal corpse used the blast beat before suffocation was even a band. he didn't invent the blast beat. look at cannibal corpse videos and the first cannbal corpse drummer innovated that. not mike smith
well to be honest, I didn't realy know who pioneered the blast beat, all I knew was that early death metal guys pioneered it, thanks for the real info

Blasting did start a long time ago. Various Artforms use "Blasting" Pop, Gospel, Rock, Jazz, and Metal. Drummers across the World use it Dennis Chambers, Marco Minneman, Dave Weckl, Virgil Donati, etc. It's just that Metal is the one that uses it like a Normal Groove.
drummakid101 2 years ago 2
You are honestly a fucking idiot then because blast beats were used the first time in heavy music by bands like Siege and Beastie Boys in the early 80's

they're not saying that he invented the blast beat, for fuck sake, just that he pioneered a new way of doing it so that the snare was still audible throughout a blast. meh, who really cares anyway, mike smith is a champion

BLACK HAHAH THE FUCKING MAN
FuckinMetal3694 2 years ago
I thought the blast beat originated from jazz, which, of course, has been around since long before there was death metal. Though the blast beat as we know it in Death Metal is quite different.
By the way, a friend told me it was the drummer of Anthrax to first play blasts in metal music, though he could be wrong.
Anyway, all the drummers you guys are naming here are pretty awesome, and we should not forget that! :D
GrindcoreHank 2 years ago
That is absolutely true man. The single foot blast beat which is done in this video, originated from jazz. Mike Smith(great drummer) was probably a fish in his dads balls when the blast beat was first done.....
dwub54 2 years ago
D.R.I's "No Sense" on The Dirty rotten LP (1983) is the earliest blast beat that I'm aware of.
ChaosGoat666lol 2 years ago
no suffocation did not come in the mid 90's you fuckin dumbass. they wrote human waste (their first ep) in 1989. and came out with effigy in like 91 or 93. know your shit. they were the brutalest band on fucking earth when effigy came out. suffo fucking rules. period.
MetalRulesRapSux 2 years ago 6
They've been around since 87' who said they were from the 90s is a dumbass...

Didn't Danny Herrera of Napalm death invent the blast beat?
eyeamlegend5 2 years ago
it wasnt danny herrera. it was napalm's first drummer. he invented the original blast beat or "euro" blast. its: c c bsbs
what mike smith invented was the hands together blast or "Smith/Suffo" blast which is explained in the video description
billnoceros 2 years ago
Danny Herrera from Napalm Death didn't invent the blast beat - he named it.
Lawlorama 2 years ago
BLAH BLAH BLAH!!!!! Pete Sandoval was single foot blast beating in the early 80's with Morbid Angel. Listen closely To Buddy Riches solos, He was blast beating in the 70's.
dwub54 2 years ago 4
Quite a rarity to see a black guy playing death metal (or any other music genre on the heavy spectrum of music) and on top of that doing it brilliantly. Suffocation is one of those bands I only listened to sporadically. Heard some records and that's about it, never saw a video or got into their biography. Would be fun to see an all-black death metal band playing.
mejsjalv 2 years ago 5
Mike Smith is cool, but the other dude should shut up.
Novskij 2 years ago 2
Bull Shit! Man that guy did not create Blast Beat....A lot of late 70's Metal band doing that stuff...That fucking geek white guy is Just kissing Mike Smith ass
jumborat12 2 years ago 3
Agreed. But, Mike Smith holds a pretty valid point with his comment on blast beating.
AlexiIsGod 2 years ago 3
Mike Smith DID invent the blast beat ( high hat/snare/bass drum simultaneously) we now use today.
Wolfsblood6 2 years ago
Sure bro!
jumborat12 2 years ago
Not really, he just sped it up. It's not like no-one ever hit the kick, snare and a cymbal at the same time before, all he did was turn it into a blasting technique and use it in the context of death metal.
webbtje 2 years ago
they call it the smith blast
Bassfiend567 2 years ago
suffocation came into the death metal business in the mid 90's, and cannibal corpse used the blast beat before suffocation was even a band. he didn't invent the blast beat. look at cannibal corpse videos and the first cannbal corpse drummer innovated that. not mike smith
MegaDeth13itch 2 years ago
Actually Ken Owen from Carcass pioneered the blast beat.
lionOFjudah33 2 years ago
well to be honest, I didn't realy know who pioneered the blast beat, all I knew was that early death metal guys pioneered it, thanks for the real info
MegaDeth13itch 2 years ago
MegaDeth13itch, Both bands have been around for about the same time, although Human Waste came out in 1989.
