Leo helps me realize why I write the things I write on a piece of paper when I have nothing else to occupy my mind. Hes just a bit more public about it.
When Lobo covered this song in the 70s-80s, he (not they...Lobo was a one-name guy like Cher) changed it from "Mel Blanc" to "the Allman Brothers" on one album, and "James Taylor" on another. The song was written by Alex Harvey, Edward B Reeves and I don't know if they ever wrote another, or another popular song.
The original song referred to "Wilson Pickett" on the radio. LK, as always, is just goofin' around. He's just great, isn't he?.... I'm a guitarist and he amazes me.
You're right, the way Kottke sings it scans much better. But then why Mel Blanc, who's best known for voicing Bugs Bunny and friends? That's what puzzles me. I thought Kottke meant Mel Tormé because this is a corny love song, and Tormé is known for singing love songs.
Kottke has a very very weird sense of humor and he's not all that interested that Everyone pick up on it. That's all this Mel Blanc thing was. Cheers everyone. Lighten up :)
I've been wondering about a change Kottke made to the original lyrics to this song. Instead of "James Taylor on the stereo," he's listening to "Mel Blanc on the radio." This strikes me as odd because although Blanc had a radio show in the 1940s, he was primarily a TV voice actor by the time Leo first recorded this in the early '80s. Did Kottke mean to refer to Mel Tormé, the singer?
Thanks to YouTube, I've heard "Rings" sung by more artists than I can count -- among them Cymarron (who were the first to record it), Lobo, Charlene, and Tompall & the Glaser Brothers. What a terrific song. If I had to choose, though, I'd have to go with Kottke's version, and this video is his best performance I've come across. His guitar picking is just mesmerizing.
the one thing that nobody talks about is his dry and deep sense of humor.how 'bout "when shrimps learn to whistle"or "in jesus christ christ there is no east or west"?the's give this guy some cred!
This is one of my favorite songs. It reminds me of growing up in a small mountain town. Leo Kottke, by far is the best musician to come around in a long time.
Thanks again Leo. Same comment as on another version. I think this is the most romantic song ever written. Great meaning for me in late June 2001. God Bless you Leo. God Bless you Cymarron. God Bless you Eddie Reeves and Alex Harvey. Jeff...age 52. Portland, Oregon
I too would love to know if anyone has the tab for this. I've been trying to figure it out for years now. Drop "D" is about all i've been able to come up with.
I love this version of the song ! thanks very much for the post! :)

Saw Leo in Toronto about 15 years ago, he opened for Michael Hedges RIP.
He played this tune a bit slower.
I'd gone to the concert alone, this song had tears streaming down by face.
I was moved. Deeply.

Leo is a national treasure. I've been a fan since "6 & 12 String Guitar" (the armadillo album on Fahey's label). His playing transports me. Sublime,

I know what you mean, he has more than one brain; the one in his head and one brain in each hand and the 3 make a band when they work out a tune.
