Hey, everyone calm down. This isn't such a huge problem. Just put on a bumper, and problem solved. The bumper insulates the antenna from your hand, preventing interference. Since bumpers are currently sold out, you can just put some tape around the antenna until they are available. But if you really want to give up all the cool new features of the iphone 4 like HD video, you have 30 days to return it.
This is a software fault and not a hardware fault.
Iphone 3gs also suffers from this same problem when running IOS4.
There are several videos on YouTube showing Iphone 3gs' losing signal the same way the Iphone 4 does, so it is not a design fault, so i'm sure a software update will fix this issue.
@josh231771 my 3gs was working perfectly after ios4.0 but i believe that the new update ( ios 4.0.1) was what had screwed up the signal (even if it was meant to fix it) because my iphone after the latest update had made it loose signal. I hope you're right because apple needs to get this fixed properly
Ok you realize you're testing it with 1 bar of reception still right? Of course you can make a call with 1 bar.... you would not be able to if you have 0 service..... that's a bad test.
The phone call goes through fine because while you're still connected to the network. Unless the phone says "searching" where the signal strength should be, you're still online. I don't have an iPhone 4, but I've made successful phone calls with ZERO bars on other models, so your "almost nothing" signal strength of one bar is more than enough for a simple voice call.
I'd suggest trying some internet speed tests to get a better idea of the effects since those are effected by signal strength.
@bacardiconlimon nie mam problemu z orientacją, widze iż głodnemu chleb na myśli - I have no problem with orientation, I see that the bread for the hungry mind
Your reception is very good: in your video it seems like you get the full 5 bar reception when not touching the phone. In other videos where the standard reception is 4 bars, the call does get dropped because in those cases the signal is weakened too much by this design flaw (that may or may not be easily fixed; someone make a youtube-movie while isolating the sidebars with a thin piece of plastic!)...
check out technoBuffalo video on this issue... if the reception drops when you hold it, it is most likely a software problem in your phone and you should go talk to apple about it.
this is happening to all the iphone 4's...the news channels are already reporting it....very sad. I was about to go and camp out:( this is definitely a hardware issue
@jondeak No, it's not - see the jon4lakers video; he couldn't replicate it. I'm getting the phone tomorrow (pre-ordered at Best Buy) - if there's a real problem, I'll return it. You were about to go out and camp for it eh? Hmm Hmm
Guys guys, this is obviously fake. You can tell the shadows behind the device are post-production rendered and the signal bars on the screen have been superimposed with professional editing software.
I have 20 years production experience, I know a fake when I see one.
Hmm, from the personalized display name, it looks like your phone is jailbroken unless that's something new with iPhone 4. Any possibility that might be causing it?
@markbyrn its not jailbroken. iphone 4 hasnt been jailbroken yet. Its cuz i restored my phone from a backup from a jailbroken phone. It has nothing to do with that plenty of users are reporting the same issue
@Chrismorris528 Well, when I get my phone tomorrow, I'm going to check it before I do a restoral. Being as I'm right handed, I wouldn't normally hold the phone to cover the left side like that - did the problem happen if you hold the phone with your right hand and cover the right side up?
This isn't zero bars, from what I remember. My iPhone 3gs will still make calls and send sms and other with it shows those same bars. I think it's basically less than 1, hardly any service. But obviously you can still make calls.
Still, the best way to determine if your service is being altered is to use speedtest and try it when you have full bars, versus hardly any bars. When the bars are lower, the speed will be significantly decreased.
thats not no service thats 1 bar of service there is a difference

it's your grip. If you use your left hand, and your palm is gripping on the left bottom corner, you will easily lose connection.

Apple should fix this by giving all iPhone 4 owners a free Bumper!

@markbyrn you have to have your hand touching the side of the phone and the bottom at the same time... touching just the sides wont make it do it
