Oh I KNOW! There is a switch on the spinner part that make that gold bar stop spinning when it hits the switch. You need to replace the spinner that spins the cd!
maybe theres something stuck near the laser check it i have this problem to then i checked near the ps2 laser i see some tissue stucked so i take it out i hope this help.
i used to have the same problem just grabbed the lasser from top and and under and moved it up and down and it was working well after that, those rods on the left and right keep spinning thats why it makes that sound, i guess jut by moving it it gets back into the place its supposed to be...
ok this is real simple im an expert in ps2 fat realy ok if u are running a fat theres a cable near the red lights if thts not connected connect it or just push it in if not working plugin every dvd drive ribbon on it happend to me like one milliontimes cuz im making a ps2 fat protable and its one tough cookie to portableize
I think your problem is that the console does not know when the laser has reached its home position.
Either on the pickup or within the vicinity of the spindle motor should be a microswitch that, when engaged, should tell the disc drive that the pickup is at home and should stop the kicker motor from running and will cause the disc drive to attempt to detect a disc and, if a disc is found, attempt to read its TOC.
watcher,I think you are right,I took mine apart after my cousin dropped it and the same thing happened to me,maybe when he dropped it he broke the switch
Seems like their is to much power being sent to the motor that moves the laser."it doesn't know when to stop sending power to the motor. A sensor somewhere maybe. might be something on the motherboard.
ummm yeah im pretty sure that laser release radioactive beams...or thats what the sticker on the disc drive says....but ive also had a problem with my disc drive's laser
not really...sorry, i broke my ps2 trying to fix it, but you can get replacement pieces im sure, and if you just type in PS2 Laser replacement on youtube it will show you how to fix it

THAT LITTLE PIECE OF PLASTIC ISN'T TOUCHING THE PIECE METAL THAT MOVES THE LASER.
That is your problem.
Just bend it back.

just connect a laser flat cable to mainboard...(switch for laser home position is on laser)...
