It always brings a smile to my face and there's no getting away from the fact that Tony McMahon is worth cycling ten miles against the wind to hear playing.
people posing as experts are actually posting that accordion and rock piano do not work .. there's a huge market for folk rock bands doing keyboards and accordion e.g. the Pogues
the problem here is that two things that are drastically different are being brought together and it doesn't work. Each on its own is worthwhile and valid, but together it is just a bridge too far me thinks. Then again both of them worked for RTE and this might have been the stations idea, we all have to do things we don't like at work sometimes right!!!
yes the 80s were an experimental time for trad music. Its easy to mock in retrospect but at least there's some energy in the playing rather than the reserved po faced technically brilliant but dead music we hear again and again in the trad world.
two complete fools.glad to see tony let the country see what he is really like on national radio.how much did frankie gavin pay him to make that phone call!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tony McMahon is a walt, anyone who listened to his insane remarks on J.Duffy show will agree. Accompanists not musicians? Alec Finn not knowing about music because he's from Yorkshire? He's nuttier than squirrel shite...
It's true that traditionally, this wasn't an accompanied music. Only in the 1950s onwards when we saw the rise of bands like the Chieftains and Bothy Band, then came musicians who started to play accompaniments. Tommy Peoples, fiddler recorded his High Part of the Road album with rhythm guitarist Paul Brady. Seamus Tansey recorded with a rhythm pianist, but both are steeped in tradition with strong regional styles.
Totally agree with your sentiment....in my humble opinion Alec Finn is an increadible musician....and has given me so much pleasure over the years in all the music projects he has been involved with....Thanks Alec
i would have to disagree with the comments made about the piano playing. At least keogh is playing the correct chords unlike piano accompanists in the past who played with the likes of Coleman and McKenna-they're absolutely awful. I think the piano playing here adds great energy and lift to the music one could say that it conveys napolean crossing the rhine during war times. great music from mc mahon as usual!
that fuker with the piano should be hit with a hurl in the back of the head!!! wouldnt that be hilarious if it happened half way through.... seriously though, thats awful piano
tony seemed to enjoy that, which is confusing, because the piano is of course awful. maybe he enjoys being tortured, and listening to other people torture tunes.
Great tune, i have seen tony mcmahon play live before....he brings an intensity to tunes few can equall. I think he captures the essence of this song magnificently. I love the piano back up...driving and raw, much like the unrelenting Napolean himself. This brand of music reminds me much of what the Bothy band tried to achieve.simply brilliant.
I love the sound of the gaelic language!

This is about tradition vs. innovation.
It's true that traditionally, this wasn't an accompanied music. Tommy Peoples, fiddler recorded his High Part of the Road album with rhythm guitarist Paul Brady. Seamus Tansey recorded with a rhythm pianist, but both are steeped in tradition with strong regional styles.
But seriously, Tony is a great player.
