  • With all her coldness Antonia exemplified the Stoic virtues, which philosophical orientation her son Claudius was also tied to. When she criticises Apicata for her lack of civic sense, she's merely saying things that would bear repetition in today's USA, or UK.

  • Excellent story line! Fantastic writing! This is what is needed in movies and television today.

  • Fantastic programme!

  • I don't know how close the Antonia of the books/this series is to the historical person. Having said that, this Antonia irritates the crap out of me. I can't stand people who play at being morally superior, while be blind to the facts right in front of them. As far as Rome going wrong, well, that started generations before, during the Republic-- the Empire just carried it to its logical end.

  • @neckronn99 you forget it all began with romulis and remus, murder will out.

  • I have to wonder if Antonia is a bit of a fool herself. She has such high expectations but is too slow to realize there's something afoot much less connect the dots soon enough. Even her famous father knew such intrigues too well if only a little too late.

  • Antonia is my least favourite main character. I think she's a judgemental bitch, doing nothing other than constantly criticising everyone & their actions. Rome is everything to her, people are of no importance.

  • @Memoria777 You have to admit how she realizes that the one son she regarded so little outlives the son and daughter who end up dying during the intrigues of Tiberius.

  • @Memoria777 not sure how accurate this is but from what I read Rome was everything not ppl. how they acted, their families, their name, was all for Rome The least little thing that could reflect badly on your family / name reflected badly for Rome and was not tolerated because it made Rome look flawed and weak Also this was before Christ where you did not look kindly on diabilities or weaknessess and such In short you needed to be strong and perfect for the empire.if not you were left to die

  • What "Big Mama" said can be said of America.

  • patrick stewart with hair???? I'm outraged

  • Why was it a secret to me and not to you?

  • Antonia, marc antony's daugher, was the last of the great Romans.

  • @starrynightz not true, in fact Marcus Aureilus came hundreds of years later and he was considered one of the greatest romans of all time.

  • @bigbossman999 Marcus Aurelius was decent, but I've always been more fond of Nerva, Trajan and Antonius Pius. Antonius Pius in particular was a decent man, who adopted Marcus Aurelius at the request of Hadrian, treated him as his own son, and pardoned many senators who were condemned to death by Hadrian. That's why the Senate gave him the title of Pius, he was a good man.

  • Ermm... what are you trying to say here? Augustus' mother never showed up in this series. Are you talking about Livia? She was Tiberius' mother. Wanting to advance her own children doesn't mean she'd Jewish. Hell, almost any mother of any religion will do all she can to advance her own children.

  • But in Latin, Julius, the Julio-Claudian clan, etc, all begin with an I, not a J.

And Juretiction isn't a word. Do you mean Jurisdiction? It's a legal concept, not a religious one. And words are bound to sound similar. After all, Batman is a Superhero invented by Bob Kane and a city in Turkey and a personal attendent for military officers.

  • she only wanted to advance her own son so in that she could de facto reighn through Tiberius, not through motherly love.

  • Why? She already had that arrangement with Augustus. In fact, influencing Tiberius instead of Augustus is a step down for her. Augustus thinks she's the perfect proper Roman wife, wheras Tiberius knows she's rotten.

  • If you move ahead in the series when she is making her confessions to Claudius she actually refers to herself as a "ruler". as an excuse for the murders she comitted.but it was. sort of the old *you don't know what you had until its gone* thing. with Augustus..she had him under her thumb, while she badly misjudged her waining influence on her own son.,who as you say, knew she was bad news.

  • At the end,you can see Patrick Stewart (Capt. Picard in Star Trek) playing a Roman noble.
