  • If you think about it, Mary herself was an outcast because she had been conceived by the Holy Spirit and she was not yet married and back then society would have treated unmarried pregnant women like lepers. Hell, even Joseph thought of stoning her until Gabriel told him the truth.

  • frollo disliked this

  • i think glee should do a episode with all disney songs<3

  • @heylovex3 There are TOO MANY it would take hours... like, at least 6 hours...

  • one of my favorite moives when i was little<3 i always wanted to be her:)

  • Notice how the real Disney princesses are not actual Princesses? Mulan, Pocahontas and Esmerelda. They all stood up for justice - Mulan by going in the place of her father, Pocahontas for doing what's best for her people and Esmerelda for what she does here. :D

  • @Chrazycat Well, Ariel was a princess and she stood up for her independence and the right for love, which I thought Disney ruined by her father being the one to give her her legs at the end. Belle had a great imagination and a mind for books and adventure and she ends up marrying the Beast who is an actual prince. Truly the best "princesses" are the ones who are strong, independent, compassionate women.

  • @Chrazycat pocahontas is a princess. the chief is basically the king of their tribe. but mulan and especially esmerelda are not princesses

  • ... and people think disney movies are evil...

  • @Tjcguy rewatch the whole movie, and REALLY listen and observe the scene where frollo is demanding that he either HAS ESMERELDA TO HIMSELF (Pride/Lust) OR WANTS HER TO BURN (Wrath)

  • Esmerelda asks for nothing. She's had to face persecution and hunger, and knows if she is caught outside her sanctuary, she will either be burned or become a slave of Frollo's depravity. Instead, she pleads God be merciful to her people.

For whose benefit do the other Disney "Princesses" pray for? Themselves. This is what makes Esmerelda beautiful.

  • pause at 1:35 lol her face is so funny it made me fall out of the chair :P

  • I guess one person is an outcast who can't be helped.

  • Who sings for Esmerelda?

  • man i still get goosebumps on this song... So heartfelt.... *siffle*

  • ...pretty selfish prayers from 1:19-1:49 if you ask me...

  • Such a touching song...the chorus with people gives me schivers...and I always have teary eyes...<3 God bless Disney classics <3

  • she looks kind of like katy perry...

  • I like this video.

  • frollo registered a yahoo account and sign up in youtube just to dislike this video

  • God help the one person who disliked this, or nobody will.

  • I thought we all were the children of God......

Truer words were never spoken, Ezmerelda.

  • This is definitely one of the most underrated Disney songs. <3

  • This song takes on special significance when you realize this film was being produced at a time when the Religious Right was up in arms about Disney not opposing "Gay Day" at its theme parks.

  • best disney movie ever. nuff said.

  • One of the most moving songs EVER.

  • I know so many less lucky than I

  • I luv this song. It's my favorite Disney song ever!

  • ...Beat that, Miley Cyrus.

  • best disney song... period.

  • I love this stuff it's amazing to know that someone can get to the heart of the matter just by singing a song!

  • Is this Demi Moore who sings this?

  • @kimberlymarie21990 No, she was just the speaking voice.

  • @BryB0x I second this!!!

  • I asked someone if they knew this song a few months back and they said no! it's terrible how these songs in this movie are so beautiful but they don't get recognized like they should!!!

  • "I ask for nothing, I can get by. But I know so many less lucky than I."

    Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful.

  • I wish Disney would have the guts for this kind of stuff nowadays.

  • Disney doesnt have the balls to make a movie this good anymore, for fear of offending somebody.and some pathetic drip somewhere would get offended, so now all of the disney movies are sappy.we need to hang on to the deep classics, because theyre not coming back :(

  • @LouBusch

THANK YOU! Somebody needed to say it!

  • 1:32 Lady Tremaine a.k.a The Evil Stepmother! XD

  • I went as Esmarelda for Halloween when I was little.

Esmarelda wonders if God was an outcast? Obviously she doesn't know much about the religion she's singing about.

I wonder if I can sing this song in my Church any time soon? This is lovely!

  • When she says "Were you once an outcast, too?" she means that when Jesus came to Earth he wasn't treated like a king but scorned, mocked, and tortured to be treated like a lower level, just like an outcast, so he knows what it feels like to be that level.

    This is a beautiful song!!

  • Exactly, but if she's wondering that, then she doesn't know much about her religion.

  • she's a gypsy...homeless...dancing on the streets for food...i doubt she would be going to religion classes or mass if most people looked down on her...

  • @BizzarreProductions She's a gypsy, they weren't given that much religious education.

Or education of any sort, really. So, she probably doesn't know.

  • @wizardwarrior713 one of few movies with a christian standpoint. Passion of Christ portrays this... I cried cuz i no what he did for us...

  • @wizardwarrior713 unfortunately shes actually talking to Mary Mother of God, because back then they worshipped god and Mary, not so much Jesus

  • @Seofangurl If that is so, then why don't you show any reverence to Mary? Throughout all of history Christians have had a respect for her. It's a modern invention of man to say Mary was a scummy sinner.

That said, you're wrong. We respect Mary. We've never worshipped her. We've ALWAYS worshiped Jesus, and God in general (including the Holy Ghost). Mary, though, is like an Olympic runner: we admire that gift of being born without sin she received from God. She was very blessed.

  • @Seofangurl And if you do not believe in the sinlessness of Mary, I understand. It's a big hurdle for a lot of people. However, do at least know that Catholics still think Mary is a creature. She depends on God for everything she received, including her sinless state, and if God so willed, He didn't need Mary. But He worked through her, all the same. And we respect that.

Also note, we never said she was without original sin BEFORE her conception. Christ saved her... before birth.

  • you're right, she DOESNT know very much about teh religion she's singing about, because she's a gypsy. it's not a bad thing to reach out to god even if you don't know much about him.

  • @BizzarreProductions i went as esmarelda when i was little too :D

  • @BizzarreProductions I was too my mother says I still dress like her lol

  • she has a pretty vioce

  • i love when she says i thought we all were the children of god this song is probably one of the prettiest from disney

  • you know im sorta surprised that disney would put such a religious song in one of their movies its not a bad thing im just sorta surprised love this song!!!

  • "i ask for wealth, frame and glory...i ask for nothing i can get by. but i know so many less luck than i"

I FREAKEN LOVE THAT PART!!!!! SO MANY PEOPLE THINK THEY HAVE NOTHING BUT HAVE SO MUCH AND ARE TO STUPID TO SEE IT. BE GREATFUL FOR WHAT YOU HAVE BC THERE IS ALWAYS SOMEONE ELSE OUT THERE DEALING WITH MORE CRAP THAN YOU

  • Something I like too point out too people frequently. They start grumbling and I point in a random direction and say

"Yah, but consider how bad the homeless guys a few miles that way have it. We got it pretty good."

And by the abyss don't get me started on those annoying emo types.

  • its sad how she says "yes i know im just an outcast i shouldnt speak to you."

they made her think she might not be good enough to talk to GOD! how sad

  • Thats what they did back then , I'm so glad things have changed , but i wish i could still claim santuary in a cathedral lol :)

  • actually i'm pretty sure you can still claim sanctuary in a chuch....i may be mistaken but i'm pretty sure that's what goes down in the US

  • lol you can't in the UK

  • I should probably point out that a famous Disney villain has an appearance in this scene. From 1:33 to 1:40. Do you notice anything peculiar about the lady who sings "I ask for love"? Doesn't she remind you of a certain character from Cinderella?

  • Nope.lolz.

  • OH WAIT! She reminds me of the evil step mother! HOLY CRAP!

  • lol thats funny

  • OH MY GOD!!! lol i love how disney does that

  • i now how you feel lady i'm a gypsy too

  • are you??

  • WOAH!!!!!!

  • This is one of my favorite disney songs.

  • This is such a BEAUTIFUL song!

  • Yeah it is isn't it. I love the violin part in the background too.
