I think DL is a smart guy, who has been around, and he definitely "gets" what HK is trying to do in his movies. But, at the same time, part of DL's persona is a "heartland" sensibility. So, I think DL is playing the part of a naive person because that's what endears him to so many. In this way he's something like Johnny Carson -- and even Leno is to some extent.
